With Doom ports, you are able to do many things that you weren't able to do with classic Doom (i.e. jump, crouch, etc.). One of the many things you can do, is aim up and down: a great thing, that can make you turn off the autoaim. This is one of the situations where voxels come handy: if you're on a ledge, there are enemies right down that ledge, and you look down, in 2d you'll see them like cardboard cut-outs. If they're too close to the ledge, you may not even see them, due to them having no depth. With voxels, this issue is solved: look down, and you'll see the 3d models in all their glory! A really good mod!

I've been following the mod's creator content and I'm always delighted. As someone who's been playing Doom (1993) for years, I've always had the same mixed feelings with Doom 3D remakes where it just doesn't feel right, however, with modern hardware and wide screens, the sprites now also look weird so I was in that place where I wished there was an alternative to sprites but never liked any of the alternatives. The problem with a lot of 3D remakes and mods is that it has a mix of aesthetics that just doesn't feel right. If you have just some of the models look 3D but the maps' textures still look like the original, it just doesn't mesh, and if you try to remake the whole thing, you can make it look somewhat better, but it doesn't feel right to have a game that plays like 1993's Doom with modern graphics. The best way could have been to make a proper remake, similar to what Black Mesa did with Half-Life, and in a way, that's Doom 2016 with the only difference being that it's completely new maps. This voxel mod is just perfect. It keeps the original aesthetic, doesn't feel out of place, fits seamlessly with the maps, the models move right and feel right... hell, there are some moments where if you paused it, people wouldn't even notice they're not sprites; but then you also have the volume of a 3D model and looking at the models from any direction it's a great way to replay this game. I absolutely love it.

This looks EXACTLY how your brain recreates it in your memory. Especially when you have enemies with multiple sides. I'm pretty sure with some A.I. Enhancing you could even interpolate animation phases and give it even more dimension and more sides for the Voxels to make the characters look even more detailed. And you could even go further and scale it up with A.I. algo scaling and giving it more details and making them look more like drawn. I'm sure someone will do this at one point. But so far i LOVE how this works with Voxels :)

3 observations jump out at me about this: First, wow, just wow. Everyone involved with this is doing amazing work. Second, the number of "At first I thought I was watching vanilla doom" comments really speak to the effectiveness of the 8-sided sprite as a shortcut to get around the technical limitations of the time. Of course it's coupled with the relatively flat architecture of the OG levels; extreme height differences between the player and sprite obviously look better with the voxels. But the fact that they figured out exactly the right corners to cut to achieve a passable facsimile of "true 3D" on a 33MHz 386 gives me a new appreciation for the big brains at 90s id. Finally, what are the practical limits of this kind of rendering? How small can the voxels get? If you had a high resolution voxel model, would it be possible to light it to make it look realistic the way traditional polygon-based models can?

There is a weirdly appealing "uncanny valley" like space that exists between the absolute cludgieness of Quake 3d models, and the ridiculously luscious capabilities of the Build engine, despite its insistence on using sprites, where a "Voxel Doom" should have been the obviously retro-future-aesthetic forever now. Civvie 11 even recently made a review of a Duke Nukem spin-off that was apparently made in the Duke 3d (read: Build) engine that has fully 3d enemies. So like, when are we getting Voxel Blood?

Guuuuh. Plus, I mean, like... There's something so seriously... *SATISFYING* about voxelizing old pixel art. Because low poly models with decently competent bitmap resolution has always been workable, (see: Metal Gear Solid for having like, 10 polygons per highly expressive anthropomorphic model that some how manages to be deeply emotive regardless,) but the idea of an "every pixel has its place" style of 3d design just... It works so well you don't even notice how good it is until you start *looking* for the sprite defects you'd normally get. I seriously want this for so many old games. Triple Triad. Blood. System Shock (ONE!) hell, motherfucking MAGIC CARPET? I might actually put my services on the black web to have a voxelized Magic Carpet. Those services wouldn't be worth much, and I'm not a betting man, but I'd wager against all the odds for something like that to grace this forsaken timeline. Edit: LOL, did I say "Triple Triad"?
