We need more of these in Canada too. Well done Mexico city, you are on the right track. If you want to get even more power out of the same amount of fuel, I hear combined cycle turbines are well worth the extra cost. A gas like propane is boiled at very low temperatures in the cooled flue gas after water has been boiled for the steam turbines. It is the same principal as a steam turbine just with a liquid that boils at a much lower temperature

Just so yalls know riverside CA had a plant like this 30 years ago, but our lovely unions and epa decided to get it shut down because they weren't making any money from it. It was a closed efficient plant that provided cheap clean power and politics and unions got it shutdown

Dang. I hate when stuff like that happens.

No, it wasn't the EPA or Unions, most likely the penny pinching of expensive executives and investors since everything is a commodity in the US due to deregulation and the unregulated free-market capitalism that you probably know (little about) and love. Also, that penny pinching would keep the emissions fairly high because that adds an extra expense to the whole process.

How are you treating the dioxins, heavy metals, and waste water coming out of this facility? How do you prevent these contaminants from reaching subterranean aquifers or spreading through the air?

Over 800 degrees c is enough to eliminate most dioxins during the combustion process.

Not only are dioxins broken by such gasification but almost all toxic waste outside of radioactive waste can be broken down.

Is it clean? Just like nuclear powerplants?
@WJCTechyman
@WJCTechyman 9 ай бұрын
Nowhere near. One of the beneficial byproducts of the Bruce Nuclear Power Plant in Ontario, Canada is it is a world supplier of medical and scientific isotopes. It is also the "flex fuel" equivalent to auto engines. It can take a variety of fission materials that conventional American plants can't.

it's steam? wouldn't it be smoke
@WJCTechyman
@WJCTechyman 9 ай бұрын
Through the combustion of garbage, that hot gas (with the soot that is smoke) passes through a boiler to take water and make it into steam for the turbine. This technology has been used for over 200 years to varying degrees. It first started in Britain for pumping water, then made it into vehicles like trains and then into ships as well as power plants for factories. Along the way, the technology has been improved but mainly used these days for generating electric power and some niche applications with hobbyists.

Probably because the facts outweighed the benefits. Like coal, combustion of garbage has some nasty by-products. That said, if there were regulations on what kind of garbage is permitted to be burned so separating that can be somewhat problematic.
