That was the best overall review of all the VR headsets that have ever been available and which ones are worth buying still. I pre-ordered the Meta Quest 3 and feel its the best headset for the money. Especially with the mixed reality capabilities it has. This video is perfect for a beginner without knowledge about VR or someone with knowledge about VR. Thomas, you covered everything here and I learned about a few of the headsets myself. No need for tracking, controllers, audio, etc. Anything beyond 1440p60 with adjustable distance is fine, and I'm ok with the cable, no need for wireless or standalone. Great video, was a fun watch going over all the different brands of VR and the types of VR. For me, I stand by, reluctantly, the HTC Vive Pro Eye because I primarily play VRChat, the eye tracking and face tracking trend has blossomed lately with people buying Quest Pros, but OLED + Lighthouse is way too good to pass up. I do pair it with my Index Knuckle controllers and the Vive 3.0 trackers for the ultimate Lighthouse setup. Though I do have a soft spot for my Index and easily recommend it to everyone I know. Such a sturdy, well built reliable headset.

I went from a Valve Index to the Vive Pro 2 & now the Pico 4. I really like the convenience of wireless inside-out tracking of the Pico 4, especially if I want to use it abroad. Setup is significantly easier than with wired + light houses. I think these standalone wireless headsets might benefit a lot from Wi-Fi 7, but I've yet to see that included. Valve really needs to do an updated release with a Valve Index 2. There's so much more they can do with current technology. The Valve Index was always super reliable with no janky extra software needed so I miss that experience & would love to see an Index 2.

the vive pro 2 can be had where I am now (Germany actually) for 530 euros. I think that's a good price, with the base stations and index controllers it ends up being some 50 euros more than the full index kit. And I am lucky enough to be able to make a side by side comparison with the Index and see which one fits me better.
@ioandragulescu60637 ай бұрын
buuuut it's not worth it. I just had the chance to try it against the Index and yeah, for me it's not good. Screens are good, the FOV is fine for me, and it seems a bit more comfortable on the head BUT, everything else is worse, in good part because of the lenses: -small sweet spot; -because of the above, it has worse edge to edge clarity. The image feels overall blurry and this is noticeable in the peripheral vision, when simply looking arround; -worse glare where I actually see the Fresnel rings; -slight random tracking issues with lighhouse, small stutters and jumps; -gets hotter even without turning off the automatic dimming (if that's still doable); -audio is significantly worse; -software is still bad. Bugs and glitches that end up in a PC restart;

I have the Valve Index, and loved every minute of using it. Currently, the cable is having issues (according to Steam help). I get sparkles, dropped sound, dropped image (goes black for 3 seconds). My wife hates the weight, and the heat (during the summer). Because it costs $600 for a new cable, I'm just looking for a new headset. I do not have nor want facebook, or other meta account. I just play Steam Games on my PC with the headset. Anything lighter, and of equal quality as the Index, would be nice. What can you suggest? I was looking at the vive pro 2 and bigscreen beyond, but... I'm not sold on the pro2, anymore.
@voy4g3Ай бұрын
I had a similar issue with my Index where the headset was essentially bricked due to the hinge mangling the end of the cable (almost by design). Had to buy a new tether for £130 as the warranty had expired and Valve support wouldn't fix the issue they created.
@ZimCrusherАй бұрын
@@voy4g3 It's just really annoying that 1) The Index has not come down in price. 2) A known issue (the cable) has not come down in price to keep customers happy. 3) there has never been an Index 2, where they improve on what they have, by at least making it lighter.

My OG Vive is struggling 7 years after getting it. Thinking about getting a Vive Pro 2 Headset and Index controllers and base stations from Steam. Those are compatible right? On paper the Vive Pro 2, index controllers and outside tracking with steam is better. I have been running this setup for 2 years, but I can't recommend it unfortunately :(. I constantly find myself going back to my Quest 2 with link cable. My Vive Pro 2 constantly glitches out, my index controllers lose tracking and glitch out too. The worst part is, replacement parts are very expensive, and I have spent way too muhc time troubleshooting the issues. My quest 2 has been very reliable, even while using the link cable. I thought I had a lot of headsets, but you have them all - nice! I am blown away by the Quest 3. I agree you would want some alternative strap. The sharpness of the screen is very good. You can play a game like “Zero Caliber Reloaded” on the headset directly without a PC. You can even host a multiplayer game, have others join your game, chat with other players, all while either recording what you see to a 2D movie or stream it to either your phone or a Chromecast TV. I am amazed that it can do all these tasks at the same time without a PC. Thank you for this interesting view on all these headsets.

Did you ever own the Index or G2 or Quest 2? And if you did, how would you say the Quest 3 compares to older fresnel lens models. Is the difference that noticeable. Biggest issue I have with G2 atm is blurry visuals and tiny sweet spot. If I’m interacting with any UI/menu it’s awful. Only really good mid action in game, but when I try to stop and look at anything, it breaks immersion. Also how about compatibility with PCVR on Quest 3? Is Steam VR on it plug and play, or are there issues you run into?
@QuadHealer11 ай бұрын
@@readifdumb I do have an Index and different Rift headsets. It has been so long since I used them, as they have the classical downsides of a Fresnel lens, and the headsets are wired. I tried a Quest 2 at my friend’s house and it struck me as a significant downgrade from the Quest 3, but it is still better than a Rift S. There is a small sweet spot where things are in focus on a Quest 2 like most others. Both Quest 2 and 3 run PCVR both from the Oculus App and SteamVR very nicely - no issues. In fact, it is so compatible that there are several different ways to hook it up, but the built-in Air Link is the best (no need for external programs like “Steam Link” or "Virtual Desktop", and I uninstalled them to avoid confusion). You only need to start the Oculus app on your PC, and then use the headset for the rest: Via Air Link you connect from the Quest to the PC desktop (crystal clear text btw) and then from your PC desktop double click on a Steam game shortcut using your controllers. There are many ways to do it, but I prefer having shortcuts. You do need to set the Air Link to use 200mbps and preferably have a wired gigabit connection to the router and use 5GHz Wi-Fi from the Quest. I will never go back to a wired headset again unless I have to. The only issue I have had is that occasionally, on my setup, the Air Link disconnects right after startup. I just restart the Oculus app and try again. Once it’s running, it just works. You only have about 2 hours of playtime before you have to charge, but honestly, I can do with a break once in a while anyway. The only other issue is that you will need some third-party head strap (or the official Elite strap) for a comfortable fit if you want to be able to turn your head quickly. Most say that the Elite strap with a battery pack is not charging the headset after some time, so until they get that fixed, I would stick with either a third-party one or the normal Elite strap (as I have). I am really impressed with the Quest 3 and look forward to seeing what the future brings.

@@QuadHealer That’s all great to hear. I currently have my G2 working, so I’m going to play a lot more VR to see if this is something I care about enough to buy a new headset. I have a lazy eye, which acts up when I can’t focus, and on top of that I have bad vision. I need insert lenses to better focus, but I’m wondering whether pancake would help with focus in general? A very specific question, but does it help with focusing your eyes, creating 3D depth, less headaches, immersion, etc? What are the benefits outside of just clarity that you might of noticed? Also is the FOV difference for the Q3 a massive upgrade, or just a okay upgrade? Like can you still clearly see the black circles on left and right side clearly, or do they fade to the background easier?
@QuadHealer11 ай бұрын
@@readifdumb It is the easiest headset I have used with glasses - the focus is better. I have not experienced a problem with creating 3D depth if the headset can set the Interpupillary Distance (IPD) to match my eyes (which the Quest 3 can). Black circles on the left and right side? I have never experienced that, but it could be attributed to either your headset, eyes, or headset configuration. I would recommend visiting a store or having a friend/colleague give you a demonstration, so you can try it out before buying. The good thing about the headset is that it doesn't need a PC, so it is easy to take around to different places. As for the FOV, I haven't noticed it to be a problem - you can compare the specifications on the headsets and see if it is acceptable for your needs. If you don't know of anyone who has a Quest 3 and a store doesn't have one on display, then you can consider posting on Facebook and see if anyone close to you would be willing to give a demonstration - I know I would be more than happy to give a demonstration, but I am guessing you don't live in the northern parts of Denmark.
@readifdumb11 ай бұрын
@@QuadHealer No I don’t sadly lol. My country currently isn’t selling the Quest 3 at any major retailer, and instead it’s all online stores. So while some people might have one, it’s not readily available. I’d have to go through Amazon to get mine if I was buying it. For the most part I think that it seems like a pretty clear upgrade, with a minor decrease in resolution, mic, and audio. Stuff I can sacrifice for overall ease of use and visual clarity. I feel like overall I have issues on most fronts. Small sweet spot; not properly aligned IPD with not enough in the higher numbers for my eyes; fresnel lenses; glare, chromatic aberration, and distortion; extremely thick cable that I have to lump around; bad comfort; WMR killing any support I have for certain games, as well as introducing a lot of instability, lag, terrible menu interactions, the list goes on regarding WMR; horrid controllers that barely work for most games, as well as can’t even do more hand gestures in VR Chat; terrible room mapping that sometimes just sends me out of my player space randomly; batteries on controller dying within one session… You get the point. Once I’ve dealt with one thing it’s another thing. VR shouldn’t have to be this hard. The last thing I’m considering/thinking about is the Quest Pro. While it is a downgrade in a lot of areas compared to Quest 3, the face tracking seems extremely cool for VRChat which is 90% of my time in VR anyway. So I guess I’ll be thinking about it longer, but I really want to upgrade now, even if it feels like I didn’t get my moneys worth out of my current headset, I’d rather not be complaining for the next 900 hours trying to get my moneys worth, when I could spend that 900 hours with a better experience.

Pimax crystal visuals so much better than Quest 3 for PCVR? What do you think or the quets 3 can catch this crystal because of better lens and the similar FOV? or not?
@voodoodevr-en Жыл бұрын
No, it can't
@Nyersevo Жыл бұрын
@@voodoodevr-en thanks so i will be order this Crystal on the Amazon and i will try it myself it is worth the price or not so it is much much better display than the Q3... good to know!
@quidnunc01 Жыл бұрын
@@Nyersevoyes, but remember you need a good (expensive) graphics card to drive it at the higher resolution mode. I would love a crystal but I still have a rtx 2080. To really take advantage I would need to upgrade (1-2k more dollars) on top of Crystal price.
@SargonDragon Жыл бұрын
I have Crystal and Quest 3, and the Crystal definitely trounces it in visuals. They both have very good lenses, but the Crystal offers much higher PPD and better black levels with local dimming. Also everyone seems to forget that Quest 3 has significant latency in PCVR mode.

I was actually a little surprised that phones only have 3 degrees of freedom, so I checked into it. I found an app that lets me see the sensor data in real-time (SatStat on F-Droid). My phone has 3 degrees for orientation (called azimuth, pitch, and roll) and 3 degrees for acceleration (gx, gy, and gz). Why can't VR games use all these and display the correct output? It seems like it should be possible.

my question is always the same > "whats the best set for gaming" but the answer always is the same year after year... "all of them and none of them" because nobody is taking all the good points and creating a set i want. always have to have bad points to put me off spending a £1000 on something that turns out to be old crap in a few months. this has been the problem with VR since the days.

Do you reccomend the quest 2 or quest 3 better?

Of course quest 3

So, a year later I would not recommend the quest 2 for anyone anymore. Not even on the cheap. I have one and they have been forced updating the software into a worse state. At this point, I don't know if I will ever get another meta devices again.

it makes me angry that there's still no good cheap pcvr only headset. how I would love something that's like the quest 3 but without the processor, battery etc., I'd buy that in heart beat.
@chadthunderlord5830 Жыл бұрын
i agree, and i think if someone made this, it may be cheapest normal vr, cause no "phone" inside with processor, ram etc eh
@SianaGearz Жыл бұрын
@@chadthunderlord5830 I think you are potentially mistaken. The phone processor is for one subsidised by Meta in the Quest because you are captive to them, dependent on their account/service, and of course they are in the business of collecting data and using it for ad targeting. For other well how are you gonna track. You still need that same processor to munch the camera image data. Connecting internal displays to PC is also not so trivial, unlike how they used to do it in DK1, you can no longer use a cheap monitor scaler for the kind of displays that you expect. So PC headsets contain super exotic chips which end up very expensive. One thing they lack is battery but come on that's $4 of cost. So i think there's a reason no random manufacturer from China or among PC related brands just pops up and makes a $120 PC headset. Fundamentally Lighthouse tracking is super cheap and efficient to make, i could do it with a $0.60 of electronics, but nobody wants to set up so much stuff in their room so it becomes a niche product, and if you can't sell at volume, it's just not going to be cheap. Plus all those bits, power supplies etc parts it all adds up. A $40 phone chipset in the headset is suddenly a reasonable expense. Weird i know.

@@SianaGearz you sound like experienced person, i must say well, i dont care about meta because they are banned in my country anyway, so i dont even look at their products but when this hypothetical cheap vr headset pc only, cant my own pc be bothered with tracking everything? and vr just be a monitor with lenses, cameras, gyroscopes, etc i honestly hope valve would do something like this with their new headset without lighthouse

The rift s is pretty similar. Same controllers (albeit an older model which is weaker and has slightly worse tracking) and a decent resolution and refresh rate, second hand I've seen them as low as £100.

So, still nope then for now. Bigscreen Beyond looks like it's getting there tho. But given how small it is, it is still impressive how fugly they managed to make that. Needing to buy everything separately is a pain, but manageable if it all at least works together well. Custom inlay is nice, but not being able to share is troublesome. Shouldn't be that hard to make a semi universal fit that sits well, especially given the reduced weight. This would make replacements easier and longevity greater. The inlay not being absorbent is also a concern. Lastly compacting it all obviously introduces some new downsides, the big one apparently being a type of blurry lens flare when displaying bright objects. Oh well, I'll just give it a few more years. ;p
