VR STEAM ENGINE - Derail Valley Simulator

In today's video, I thought I'd take a virtual-reality (VR) passenger tour in the old-faithful S060 Steam Shunter, in Derail Valley: Simulator.

VR is awesome although it is a PITA to set everything up you can only do things that exist in the VR world. Mine (Reverb G2) also has a particularly chunky cable to the headset. You hear EVERYTHING in VR ! It's so amazing seeing how everything fits together, and how some things are behind or under other things. It's scary the first time you're standing right next to the track as a big double headed DE6 train approaches and thunders past. How do you walk in VR ? I only ever teleported, although I played sitting down, and I haven't done VR in Simulator. The lighter was a good trick, it goes back to your inventory in 2D, maybe in VR you're not supposed to throw it in ? Would you say driving the S060 was easier or harder in VR, or just different ?

VR is definitely a completely different experience. I'm playing on a lowly Oculus Rift CV1 and I think it's definitely time to upgrade. The experience within this headset isn't ideal due to the low resolution and what looks like dropped frames when I move my head quickly. I'm sure it's not my GPU either as I have an RTX 3070. But I stick with it for the sake of getting the footage lol. How's the Reverb G2? I hear the resolution is much better than the CV1. I walk using the joystick on the hand controller. I think there's an option in DV settings to enable that. I find it's a more 'natural' experience. Not too sure about the lighter , but I think it just 'pops' back out so you can pick it up again. I did try holding it near the coal off camera but it didn't seem to work that way. I'd say the locos are definitely more of a 'handful' to operate in VR mode from experience. And it makes you be a bit more cautious as I couldn't imagine the horror of careening down a hillside in VR mode lol 🫣. I may try out the DM3 next in VR mode but you've got me thinking whether I should upgrade my headset as well. Hmmm
