I had a person with a compiled texture; so they could crash me even without avatar textures shown, in fact it made it autocrash each time the avatar came out; no modifications required, just avatar texture/block compiling to up the polygon count to extremes

Some avatars have flight built-in, so I know for sure that it can be recreated in-game no problem without mods. As for searching for avatars and the other quality of life stuff, that is probably gonna happen eventually. They finally fixed the video players on Linux after years of people of trying to getting them to work, they're most likely gonna put more accessibility features in the main game in order to not totally lose everyone.

i've been keeping up with all of this going on from friends and yes it definitely is. qol mods and accessibility mods that were very useful are practically being gutted due to this. it's basically just a fat middle finger to the entire modding scene and doesn't stop the malicious people from bypassing the anti-cheat which will most likely happen.

Im a VRC user too, and one of my friends told me that a disabled girl went onto the VRC discord server and begged for this update to cancel, and explained she uses mods for her disability to be able to chat to friends and whatnot. They banned her from the server and soon on vrc itself. My opinion this update didn’t do shit and its disappointing that this affects the community in the worst way possible. They dont care about us, just how they’re trying to market vrc and making money, im letting my friends know about this since 70% are FBT PC users by sharing this video to spread awareness. Soon Vrc developers will understand they fucked up the hard way.

Craziest thing to all of this is that Vrchat was a socializing medium for some disabled users that couldn't go outside for various reasons who needed mods in the first place to be able to properly enjoy the game. They didn't just screw over players who wanted extra features, they screwed over the deaf, mute, blind, and physically disabled with no replacement or any help whatsoever for them

As someone who is only semi verbal, agoraphobic and needs walking aids to leave my home, being online is the only way I have been able to spend time with anyone. While I haven’t been able to use VRchat it would have been very useful for me to have gotten to use. Most people have no idea how ridiculously important the internet is for disabled folk. Yea, I’m among the disabled player base who just never goes outside due to autism, anxiety, depression. I also have physical disabilities making me need to lie down in VR if I need to so I’m always playing in my bed. First of all, wanna say thanks for bringing this to light The funny thing about VRC+ is that a lot of these features it added have been available on free clients for years and VRC decided to add them as a paid feature, and actually banned mod creators at one point, until they reversed the decision. The next issue comes with accessibility, many people I know rely on TTS mods or closed caption mods to play the game, there are even fixes for people with epilepsy. By banning these mods, VRC essentially blocked out all accessibility from its game, and currently as they state, have a 'plan' to add these features back. The company has a very bad track record of not releasing any fixes the community wants, and only those that get them money. Finally, the actual methods used for ripping avatars and crashing people are native to the game. Ripping an avatar is as simple as getting the ID from an 'encrypted' (not really) file on your computer in your locallow directory. EAC has obviously not stopped this in any way. Crashes are done through shaders, which are allowed by default in VRC. Most shaders used are actually default ones built into unity, this makes it near impossible to patch through this solution. Essentially in the end, this is only hurting QoL modders, and disabled people who need the extra accessibility to the game, and doesn't actually solve any of the issues with the game. Pretty much every malicious attack in the game is carried out through vrchat's extremely insecure api **(you can literally see if somebody has 2FA on their account publicly)**, or done through ways that would require actual work to fix them. This seems like a shortcut to an investment milestone, VRC saying "HEY META! Look we added security!" when in reality it does nothing but hurt the playerbase significantly. I hope this can give some sort of insight into why people are so frustrated with this change. It solves nothing and just creates more issues. Praying they reverse this decision and actually fix the game, or we see a competitor that is just as good as VRChat in the future. Thanks!

I'm glad you covered this, and I just wanna add to the list of why this was the worst update ever. - They failed to realize that most crashes and malicious intent is done through avatars, not the clients (not to say that clients can't be malicious, but it's uncommon) - The devs themselves said "We hear your feedback and resounding voices about the EAC update, *but screw you we're going to release it anyway and we don't have a plan to revert it* - The majority of mod users are people with disabilities who NEED the mods to be able to play the game (Reduced lighting for epilepsy, captions for hard of hearing, performance improvements for low-end PCs) - By making this update and now refusing to set it back, malicious users are now even more enticed to go into VRChat and cause havoc. It would've been better and safer if they had not released the update at all - As of now, VRC has lost a chunk of it's online players and ChilloutVR has spiked 1,000 users in 48 hours. I really hope the developers realize what they've done.

Check out ChilloutVR as an alternative. They have everything VRchat has, plus all of these QOL mods as actual features, same engine, and they actually care about their community. They've had like a 5000% player growth in the last few days. Most players are switching over there due to this change, including mod makers and avatar makers.

I've put well over 3,700 hours into VRChat, I've seen and been apart of that part of VRChat they don't really like to bring up. Less people would have an issue with EAC being added if any of the protections the modding scene has made and have had for YEARS at this point. All the hard work they did to make the game in a playable state while seeing everyone is out the window. Corrupted asset bundles, shaders, particles, meshes, polygons, Out Of Bounds bullshit, photon network abuse, all the protections the modding group made for those that AREN'T IN THE GAME mind you, is now gone. The developers of VRChat has almost NEVER made steps to fix things like this, the few times they did was few and far between being the Final IK iterations crash, and the camera clap. That's the only ones they've fixed in a long LONG time, all the methods people use to crash your game have been fixed by modders, not the developers. Not to mention the mods people use for accessibility for the deaf or mute are now all out the window, not to mention this just means the people who make open source mods for QoL and protection reasons are out the window more than anyone else because, since the mods are open source, they can update EAC to not allow them, but the people who obfuscate their stuff (Who didn't all copy paste the open source code) would be able to get through without worry since loading EAC with mods doesn't auto ban you but just makes it so VRC doesn't load, meaning you can slam you head against it until you get through without worry

It's pretty trash considering people will still have things that will bypass EAC, like Avatars designed to crash peoples games and melt peoples PCs from the inside out, purely based on how they're designed, this of course isn't technically against VRCs TOS and isn't affected by EAC and will continue to be a problem, things like mods help by adding advanced safety features to prevent yourself from being crashed or affected by avatars causing performance issues. Also people will be developing clients to bypass EAC (they already have for other games) and continue malicious practices like IP grabbing. Implementing EAC into VRC does nothing except damage a large player base looking to improve quality of life within the game and will ultimately do nothing to resolve any issues the team thinks they're addressing. Also conveniently not addressed by VRC and unrelated is the issue regarding pedophilia within the game and not implementing some sort of age restriction. Vrc is pretty famous for not fixing shit

Its funny too, since most of the malicious clients that are in vrchat are not the only methods of doing most of the horrible stuff that they think easy anti cheat will prevent. Such as crashing other users with over the top avatars, or directly stealing peoples work through their unencrypted files or cashed data and re-uploading it to your own account or even breaking down the files to steal their components. The clients are only a part of the problem, and funny enough at times the solution, being able to use Anti-crasher mods with safe clients. It almost feels like vrchat is dishing out this update to destroy community progress, like they are afraid other people are going to make their game better than they can. Ether that or to prevent avatar searching through the modded servers/extended avatar favorites, so they can make more money expecting people to opt out and buy vrchat+.

UPDATE: as of typing this comment, they have went ahead and pushed the EAC update already. the PC population has dropped and the majority of users on VRchat are meta oculus quest players. 2 weeks ago, VRchat posted a LinkedIn job looking for a Senior Compliances Operations Manager with experience in crypto and in-game currencies. this heavily suggests that VRchat banned mods only to turn around and monetize them.

It's not just QOL, it's the mods that allow disabled people to play too. Those in wheelchairs, those with a need for good text-to-speech, et cetera. Another issue that's been raised is how slow development will be and always has been, making their promises of hopefully maybe adding them one day all the more weaker. A recent graph I've seen has shown a 20k+ drop of players boycotting the game because of this, and I don't blame them. Edit: Not to mention how ineffective EAC can really be, ultimately leaving people who actually stick around with the experience that is base-game vrchat alongside the more dedicated hackers and the script kiddies that ride on their backs.

A major issue is the fact that the antichest simply does not stop the issues of people's models being ripped out of the game and used by other users. Due to VRchat's almost completely non existent security on the networking side and not Modifying how the interaction of the API works, These issues have been rampant for years causing more groups of people in game do not want to join public lobbies in fears of getting their models ripped or their clients crashed, etc. The quality of life updates are completely lacking on VR chat to the point that people have had to use mods so that it can even play the game on hardware that simply can't run the game natively. VR chat took literally 3 years to update the VR camera which took one dev basically a day to do which they released with almost no fanfare where as overall performance, updating the search menus for friends/worlds, accessibility for disabled users like Live close captioning and other systems would help people communicate more effectively, and many other things that have been talked about being Implemented for years but VRchat actively almost refuses to do actually put them in the game. The VRC devs have their Priorities all wrong and have actively not been listening to the community as they only reach out to their own close circle of people they have in echo chambers of their own ideas for how they think the game should be. The whole of the VRC plus Subscription system which VR chat implemented over a year ago was put in place to give people exclusive access to things that new users wouldn't get. All they ever gave the paying users was a photo profile that anyone can see, speical photo invite requests, and extra slots for favoriting more avatars and worlds in game and that is it. The whole reason they set up the subscription system in the 1st place which is because they had HTC Vive give them a 10 million dollar loan for VRC to develop the game more with which they blow all the money and didn't have a way to pay HTC back Since they didn't have any revenue stream. So the VRC plus service was made. Keep in mind that literally took the community to tell the devs that people wanted VRchat merchandise to support their own game and it took them nearly 2 years after people asked and of course, they haven't updated any new designs or anything for their own merch since. So this gives you an idea of how piss poor the devs care or act even in their own best interest

It's funny, most of the mods I had specifically stopped crashes and added other security features vrchat still doesn't have. Not to mention crashers crash via the base game, due to the way certain avatars implement particles and shaders. In other words, anticheat won't stop crashers, but it will stop me from trying to protect myself from crashers. A+ tier security update VRChat.

What confuses me with this decision is that most of the complaints I've seen from people involving VRChat are all to do with how the game itself is designed. Custom Crasher avatars for example, those aren't created with mods, they are made entirely through Unity using the same code that VRChat utilizes. Unless this update also adds a hard limit on how many/how intensive the avatars can be, this won't change a thing. Same thing goes for performance. VRChat has had a pretty bad reputation with its performance from what I've read, and people use modded clients to add things like FXR and additional graphical settings to make the game run better. Again, unless this update magically integrates these features to improve game performance, this won't do anything, and in fact will just make the game worse overall. Also, I do not get the "creators are impacted by modded clients" argument. I don't doubt that modded clients can cause compatibility issues with VRChat worlds, but that shouldn't fall into the responsibility of the game's developers to fix, certainly not by going Scorched Earth and removing mods entirely. Same goes for compatibility issues caused by game updates. It should be the responsibility of the world creators and the developers of the modded clients to update their content to fix the problem.

I was "okay" with the original announcement because I get the reasoning behind it, but I assumed that this particular update was a ways out to give some more time perhaps for some of these features that they're promising in compensation to come out. Now that this is clearly not happening, it's a lot more jarring. I understand the backlash now a lot more. It doesn't particularly impact me, I didn't care to modify my client at all. But I get the frustrations now.

The blow would've been softened just a touch if, when they made the original announcements for OSC and better tracking, they also said "hey this is part of an effort to introduce popular features because we're gearing up for anti-cheat". I've got 2000 hours in VRChat. The majority of people I know or meet on there use mods to improve QoL. In my experience, the amount of people who use malicious mods seems to be pretty small. Most of the harassment is people saying offensive slurs in public lobbies, not hackers. This is just a push to try to force people to get VRC Plus. They've butt heads with emmVRC a lot in the past, one of the most popular mods, because they wanted people to use the subscription, instead of a mod. emmVRC actually was very compliant with them, and started requiring you to have VRC Plus in order to access some of the mod features. Again, with all the hours I've had, I've NEVER seen their staff act on harassment. I've seen p-d0s going around, flirting with people who're underage, getting reported by 5-10+ people, and NEVER get banned or spoken to. Would have taken a mod 5 minutes to join, see proof immediately, and taken action. They don't care about that stuff because it isn't about the community, it's about how they can just make more money. They don't care about their playerbase at all.

What's most infuriating is that crashing is mainly done through avatars in the game, not clients. And in regards to avatar ripping, that can still be easily done without a client, and iirc it can be done through holes in their API, so effectively it prevents people from using QOL modifications and even protections against crasher avatars that mooders made while still allowing malicious users to do what they've always done.

Another thing to add: the issue of modified clients affecting user's safety when using them will probably over time increase more than it will decrease because of this update, as malicious clients and loaders who don't share to the public what they do with their info and do whatever they want and use any means necessary to get past anti cheat will most definitely be around way faster than any other safer solution like emmvrc and may even take advantage of that and disguise themselves as a new solution to everyone's problems, meaning a decent chunk of the mod using player base especially the younger ones will probably see this new mod and loader they can use as a nice new solution to their problem of not having their mods anymore, not knowing it's malicious intent and what it may do to them causing them to fall into the exact trap vrchat said it was trying to avoid because of what they just did. It's just a sad situation overall, as somebody who personally used mods because I'm visually impaired and also to have fun with friends and stay safe and somebody who has worked with the vrchat social team before for a big event I hosted for them, this feels like a gigantic stab in the back, and I know many many others are feeling it too.

I also work with individuals with disabilities at my job, and these updates effectively would make the game un playable for these people. This update was pushed too soon, without a care to the small percent of users who needed to break TOS just to play the game. Mods require a similar process to the games development with continued support to work and keep up with the pace of the game updates. If a mod breaks someone has to fix it for it to be usable ever again. If say the game updates and said mod stops working but it was bought out then the mod maker isn't going to fix it their scott free with money in pocket. It now falls to the devs to fix it if it was just grafted on like that instead of properly coded in. Creates so many issues and complications. Sounds like the VRchat community is a bit spoiled when it comes to the modding aspects and many probably lack understanding of just how complicated the backend for all the stuff they use can get. I feel like EAC was a little weird to put in a social game but that doesn't change the fact that just "buying out the mods" or "copy pasting the mods" are ignorant statements that few people actually know how much effort those things will take to be properly done. As a rather decent Avatar maker and the person who's been on VR chat for about 2 years now, I'm glad to hear muta talk about this, I have friends who constantly use quality of Life mods and mods that straight up make the game playable for them, and there are a ton of mods that I even used before more recent updates that were entirely for fun, they cause no real problems. A lot of avatars that are used to crash instances and people use particle systems or inject code into the lobby of people or the person they're targeting and it crashes them does whatever else malicious stuff they need to do, EAC isn't going to stop that because it is not advanced enough to detect actual Crashers and other malicious clients. Something like EMMVRC which is extremely helpful and fun to use and it's just a quality of life feature that very passionate people for this platform made so that other people can enjoy it furthermore, because the VR chat team itself refuses to fix things properly. I hope maybe the go back on this, but from the looks of it it seems like they're going to double down. Which will probably lose them the majority of their player base. Although it doesn't affect me it will affect the majority of people I know, I hope my work on that platform doesn't get wasted.

Imo, if they partnered with mod creators/ teams (like emmVRC) the vrc devs could continue focusing on the main core functions (like security), while modding teams could build their mods into vrc. Oh, I had a brilliant solution.. Add _official modding_ to the game, with a review system. You gain the benefits of offloading the development of certain features to mod developers. While being able to regulate which ones are "cheating." I'd imagine there being two ways of doing this, but I'll start with the thing that both ways would do. Firstly, any mods that have been uploaded will be under the account of the user that submits it, they'll be the one getting slapped on the wrist if they upload anything malicious. Now this is where it diverges.. Option A: Mods are uploaded and submitted, and players can use the mod immediately.. If it's malicious afterwards → remove it. Option B: Mods are reviewed by some team of people before the mods are allowed to be used.. There is still a possibility of it being malicious afterwards anyway, if it is → remove it. Lastly, while there would be some review team, it would also make sense that players can also report/review it as well, this would help highlight the mods that the review team should focus on first.

To answer the how of crashers: Basically, there's a few levels of crashers. 1. Particle crashers: These avatars use a system in the game to display particles to people. They add so many particles all at once, or corrupted/damaged/malfunctioning particles, that when you look at them, your game can't process it and it overloads your GPU/CPU to a point where the game ends itself due to not being able to process it all. These only work on PC users though, not Quest users, since the Quest can't load particles (as far as I have been told.) 2. Shader crashers: Similar to particle crashers, but uses shaders rather than particles. These are more dangerous though because they have been known to completely blue screen computers. I saw one that was able to do this, but thankfully due to having anti-crash mods, it didn't blue screen me. Just overloaded my GPU to a limit where I had to exit out the game, restart my system and restart my headset. Again, these don't affect Quest users since they can't see shaders. 3. Event crashers: These avatars just send a command to your game to forcefully close it out, in layman's terms. These ones, as far as I know, cannot be stopped with any known anti-crash mod. If there is something that stops it, correct me, but everyone I know who's more in depth in the technicalities of crashers have told me they can't be stopped. I've seen a few of these, most prominently Death Gun from SAO that when they shoot you, your game closes. There are also other forms of crashers that don't inherently crash your game, but other systems. Such as, audio crashes. These aren't always avatars but can also be from malicious clients that play a really loud sound that crashes the audio drivers of Quest headsets for a time based on how long the crash ran. If it's from an avatar, it does nothing to Quest users since they can't hear audio from avatars. There's probably also a ton of other crashers/crashes that I didn't cover here and haven't personally experienced. These are just the ones I know exist and the ones that are most often used. There are also avatars that specifically crash Quest users but not PC users, and vice versa.

The biggest issue people are concerned about is accessibility. VRchat has NOTHING in the way of accessibility features, and they have tens of thousands of deaf users. The reasoning, and the problem that's allegedly being solved is crashers, which are and have been a problem. They're also trying to stop avatar theft, but it's important to note here, that you don't need a modified game to do either of these things. The way worlds work, every avatar around you is downloaded and cached on the client system. All you have to do to steal one is understand how the encryption works (because it's been cracked), and you can do it too. There are freeware tools you can download for your PC that do just that. Crashers kick people out of the game by loading specific tricks like particle explosions into their avatars, which overload clients. But, what's funny, is that crashers don't need modified game clients to work. See, the code is in avatar itself. What's more is that nearly the entire community already knows about this stuff. Huge percentages are of the VRCHAT population use Unity on a regular basis, and know how these things work! So people, correctly, feel like they're being lied to. And that's because, well... they're being lied to. Implementing this particular anti-cheat, in this particular way has absolutely nothing to do with addressing the problems outlined in their press release, because these problems will continue to exist. This whole thing has a stench to it like this decision was made by someone who doesn't actually understand the game. Maybe the board? I couldn't say. But without mods, they run the real risk of Americans with Disabilities Act violations, which I don't think they quite understand yet either. As you know, lawsuits against internet companies that don't provide accessibility accommodations have an ungodly high success rate over the last few years. And I think that's positive. It's a way bigger problem than "Gosh, we would love to implement this, but VR is hard and oh well?" Fuckers I think a better solution would be to block all unauthorized mods, and put together an app store or something like that, where any mods that are in use have to approved, and verified to avoid tampering. A simple checksum would do the job 99% of the time. And they could offload support to the authors of these mods, which already happens.

As someone who makes content on VRChat I have met so many amazing people from all different walks of life. I have met a fair number of deaf and hard of hearing users, they are dependent on mods to be able to play. It hurts seeing VRC just screw over their community with flagrant disregard for how it effects their disabled community. it hurts seeing a platform I fell in love with just not care about it's userbase. They hurt my friends.

I had no idea the scope of this implementation until you said this would essential kill "full-body-tracking". That's a hugely important tool used by so many in that community, I can't even begin to imagine how many lives and communities this is going to impact negatively. Hoping that they reverse the decision, though I seriously doubt it. The developers have also proved themselves as severely incompetent at implementing actually wanted features, so this might actually be the death of VRChat as we know it.

The idea you mentioned about having it to where if you mod the game you can only connect to other modded users wouldn't exactly work since people have a mixed friends list of people without mods and people with mods. The only way I could every see this working is to: Load into game with mods, your home instance now becomes tagged as "modded". All public worlds that you see in the worlds menu will now only be modded instances that were created by other modded users. However there is one big plus to this whole concept: If a friend of yours tries to join you and they have no mods, They will have a popup message before loading into the world saying "The instance is modded, do you wish to proceed anyways?" (That way it allows modded and non-modded to still work and if a friend invites you to a non-modded instance, you simply wouldnt be able to join unless your friend joins you instead in your modded instance)

I am someone who has over 1500 hours in this game and happen to be someone who lurks around in a lot of VRChat modding communities, including those developing mods/clients that have crasher and cheat-esque capabilities. I got into modding because I kept on getting crashed by crashers, and wanted to stop them and counter them. I began small, and later expanded to having three paid clients running at once. I can count the times I have actually used offensive tools on one hand and now regret doing that, though all of those times it was as a reaction to crashers crashing random people. I only ever used my tools to protect people from bad actors by using detection tools and anti-crashers to protect myself. However, recently I have moved back to only using more law-abiding and wholesome mods because the last paid client I used introduced a feature that I really couldn’t accept morally. As someone who knows these things from inside out, I can tell you with certainty they have put a loaded gun to their heads and pulled the trigger with this update. The clients with malicious functions will find their way around the anti-cheat, I’m sure. But the devs who create more wholesome mods will not try and bypass this restriction. They are just guys developing this stuff because even though VRChat devs hate them, they love VRChat and want to make the game better. And guess what? VRChat needs them in my opinion! It pains me to see all this stuff, and the solution Muta provided in this video is so much better than using anticheat. I have spent hundreds of euros buying VR equipment, a powerful beast of a computer and VRChat Plus subscriptions for both me and some of my friends, all for the game. Honestly, this makes me want to put VRChat down and only ever pick it up to see my Quest friends. Being used to a full-featured VRChat experience, the update is more of a downgrade to the stone-age era. It just really, really sucks.

another big thing to mention is that some mods are used by people with various disabilities so that they can actually play, like there are mods that allow sign language usage for the mute etc, so those people are getting fucked over aswell, especially since theres been basically no warning about this coming and VRchat devs didn't even bother adding those sorts of features that people have been requesting for years

In VRC, there's an honestly very common thing called "crashers" which is people with special clients that can pull out (usually) guns with millions of polygons that can instantly fry you pc if they aim their guns to you and you don't block them fast enough. There's even more advanced clients that can freeze people and stop them from being able to leave, then play very fast and bright changing colors in their screens in the hopes that they get a seizure. So yes, VRC has a strong reason to get an anti-cheat, although I doubt that would do anything to the more uncommon and dangerous clients because they're usually spread through small discord servers and I guess it'd be harder to patch? I'm not very sure if the anti-cheat can work without knowing more or less what the client is.

From what the community is saying, the Anti-cheat effectively does nothing beyond banning mods, as the crashers will, 99% of the time, use avatar based crashing systems that have always been used in the past. The crashers almost always focus on crashing users instead of servers regardless, so their secure instances update doesnt do anything either. Instead of uploading all the QoL improvements to vrchat BEFORE deleting all mods, they chose to make empty promises (based on precedence of their own incompetent development schedule). Im guessing this is a move to appease investors by making it seem like they're increasing the security of their game. I guarantee the devs know EXACTLY how people get crashed/hacked but specifically chose to use the easiest method at their disposal. The reason they seem so disconnected with the community is because they've built entire echo-camp grounds of people that only agree with them or suggest things they already want to implement. They ban users from their discord for disagreeing with the update or even tying anything but support (for example one user typing a lemon getting banned several hours after they typed it for 'spam'). They've literally designed their entire user feedback loop so that they never get any feedback about improving the game anyway, and this is going to backfire. They dont know what the real community wants, and have specifically placed themselves as a "frog in a well" when it comes to feedback, so they probably didn't even see the avalanche negative press coming their way.
