Bridge is an essential part of the engine. You can keep recasting Hogaak with a different sac outlet. Probably not three or more times a turn while milling your opponent but you still get an army for little effort. Having new creatures to convoke Hogaak over and over makes the deck work.

It probably made the deck better than wht it is today, but that's just more busted. I'd say Vengivine and Sticher supplier are the most problematic parts. The first gives a great agroo back-up plan while synergising with Hogaak, and the Sticher just fuels it to much.

My guess is Bridge will be banned given both Hogaak & Altar just got printed. It's frustrating because I bough into the deck before Horizon because I felt Carrion Feeder was going to get put into Modern. How about that Urza deck?? That seems to hose Hogaak.

Altar is the worst offender because it is both engine and win con. No other card in the deck serves both functions.

engine, wincon, protection against path to exile and removal in general, you can't respond to it, the winning condition doesn't involve the combat phase and you can use it for other combo decks if hogaak gets the ban hammer. Obnoxious card in general...

It's really not.. The primary purpose of altar is to put bridge in the bin so then you can combo off. I feel like this deck revolves a lot more around bridge then altar. Altar just lets you reassemble your pieces quick, but at the end of the day it's a bridge deck. This deck either wouldn't exists or just be a normal modern deck without bridge. Similar to Hollow One, where it has some explosive starts, but also has very average starts as well, and a lot of bad ones. Furthermore, Hogaak and Altar just got introduced, and altar has some other implication besides this deck, so I think Bridge gets banned if anything.

Twin has been safe for modern for at least a year now. Twin along with stoneforge need to come off. If anything they will make the format more fair not speed it up.

Hayden Sanders I respectfully disagree. Twin's problem was twofold, in that 1) it could be used in a monstrous amount of different variations (Grixis, Temur, Izzet, Jeskai, Boros, were all versions of the deck I had to fight through) as a dedicated Twin deck, and 2) tons of decks had sideboards that could switch from "not-Twin" to "Twin" if the opponent didn't look to be able to deal with Twin. Add in Force of Negation as more backup to protect the combo, and Twin could easily become just as oppressive as it was back then. I will grant you, though, that Mystic might be safe to let free. I will oppose it in spirit, however, just to spite my local Death and Taxes player. EDIT - forgot Force of Negation is only free on the opponent's turn. Still stand by most of my original points, though.

Nicholas Farrell I would argue the exact opposite, as twin requires whole decks to be built around it (roughly 8-15 cards dedicated to the combo, stoneforge + batterskull/1-2 swords is a dominating midrange package that can be chucked in somewhat easily to quite a few decks. I would prefer a deck type with 8-15 combo cards backed up by interaction over a 3-6 card package that would invalidate a lot of other fairer decks.

To be fair, Todd played both the first games realllllly poorly. In the second game he even had snap remand mana up and ross barely ever gets to a 4th land so there was some possibility to survive a turn longer.

my main problem with all the hate towards hogaak is the bridgevine deck was a joke until it was busted and now everyone is calling for bans on it left and right.

The thing is though I honestly dont think it's a problem. G1 it's a monster but G2 and G3 you can shut it down hard. I think people just haven't had enough time to adapt to the deck. It's been legal of a week or two and people dont want to adapt to new decks so instead of learning how to beat it, people just want to ban it

Quite frankly at this point we've got a lot of empirical evidence pointing exactly the other way. The deck has been performing extremely well and came into a format where hate against it was already prevalent. Certainly there's a period of adjustment with any new deck, but with Vine we've already gone through much of that period thanks to Phoenix and Dredge.

Tyrell Sweezy dog I’m not sure if you’ve been watching matches or not but most of the time Hogaak will still power through Cage, Ravenous Trap, or Surgical just fine. When not even massive hate can stop the deck, is when we have to take matters into our own hands. And yeah I understand your point about the deck but think about it this way: only one card is gonna get banned, so the deck is still gonna be much better than it was.

I think that it's the card that is most likely to be banned, if any, first. I don't think WotC wants to ban anything from their fresh to modern set...yet. I think that this deck still functions without bridge and you can still get a turn 2 Hogaak, but it slows the combo down a fair deal. It's possible that they turn to banning Altar/Hogaak in the future.

​@@khub5660 Good talk? I agree that banning Hogaak/Altar is the best way to remove the deck. It's not the best for Modern Horizons booster sales and it risks lowering both buyer confidence and their own confidence when/if MH2 arrives. Soft banning the deck could relegate it down to lower tier 1/higher tier 2 rather than completely removing it. Naturally we want a diverse Modern metagame, which means both not having super dominant decks and having a larger diversity of decks. I simply don't see much reason on Wizard's part to ban a card so soon after its release.

@@RoughToughTonkasGotTheStuff I agree but on the flip side of that if they ban altar they still hogaak to enable bridge and it doesnt have a legit combo finish so to speak and it can still get a ton of zombies but it's not nearly as self sufficient as altar it's more like turn 3 or 4 with a couple bridges and a carrion feeder and at that point it's far more likely to get hit harder to graveyard hate they can still have there evoke creatures but it's not nearly as egregious

Metalmind XD “I had a very creature oriented draw to start, but then my FAITHLESS LOOTING found altar and...the game ended.” Note that in that instance he pitched 2 graveyard synergy cards. He essentially went +1 IN RED for ONE MANA. But remember that ponder and preordain are banned. Phoenix, hollow one, and bridgevine all use it as straight oil to grease an already quick engine. (Plus kci when that was legal) Not to mention it has flashback, so yeah, more graveyard synergy. #BanFaithlessLooting

We've been wanting them to ban looting for a long time and it still continues to be a problem. Sure its not a win condition but it's a mechanic to any graveyard deck as well card selection.

Take away Bride from Below, and the deck isn't that good anymore. People are able to mill out players and easily cast Hogaak by T2 is because of the repeated Zombies that enter the battlefield because of Bridge from Below.

Because sitting across from t3 Bridegvine with no answer is better somehow? T2 or 3 Phoenix with no answer? Affinity? Infect? The format has devolved into the fastest deck to their wincon with no interaction. Unbanning Twin would add fuel to the fire but could arguably force decks to play fair because they NEED to run removal.

God I hate these videos where they undervalue the strength of splinter twin. They are purposely misplaying the deck in hopes of bamboozling viewers and swaying the public opinion. Come its inevitable unbanning due to their influence, splinter twin will be viewed as too under powered and will not see tournament play. Gods like Todd will come in a single handedly Shrek the meta with the “unsuspecting” splinter twin. I can see the headlines now, “Todd Anderson desecrates worlds” while wearing a Thanos gauntlet equivalent made of entirely splinter twins. Wake up sheeple... splinter twin is still the most oppressive deck even when banned. I vote to eliminate the card from Magic’s history entirely. Bridgevine is cool... probs the most fair deck in years. Nice of Wizards to give new life to a tier 47 deck.
