I am Ghanaian and he is right. I am in my late 40s and my parents and uncles used to say that often that it was new. The Ghana must go folks introduced it big time. It was not a big thing previously with very few people speaking it. The old folks always complained about it when we were young that it mess up the English language in Ghana. It used to be associated to street folks and was frowned upon back in the 80's.

Nigeria pidgin English is as old as wen the British came into NIGERIA 🇳🇬. Our grandparents spoke the language. It's not recently Nigerians started speaking the pidgin English. Our grandparents handed it down to us, while Ghana pidgin English was learned recently when Nigerians started schooling in Ghana.. The sincere Ghanaians who were students in Legon, Kumasi University science and Technology, etc. They would testified about. Throughout my stay in Ghana, nobody spoke pidgin English in my hearing because I was born there in the late 50s and in the early 60. This pidgin English is a new language in Ghana and they got the inspiration from Nigeria through our students who went to Ghana to school and through social media. It is good to learn from us so as to communicate freely. Long life Nigerians and Ghanaians.

Dear Demochets, this is yet another lovely video! It seems that the guys are just playing up the NG/GH beef for entertainment though 😂. We aren't always bickering at each other like this in real life. Re: Nigerian Pidgin, the area that was carved out and named Nigeria is very large. The creators roped together many diverse ethnic groups, some without cultural affinity, and imposed their own language and culture on them. This mix involves some 500 languages, each with further dialects. And so, Pidgin English evolved to bridge the ensuing communication gap. Those with the means and interest go to school to learn Western Education and Western languages, typically English and/or French. However, not all have the means (e.g. the poor) or the interest (e.g. nomadic tribes). Therefore, not all speak Standard English and those with more diversity have evolved Pidgin English. Those with less diversity, such as Northern Nigeria where Hausa is predominantly spoken, are less likely to speak Nigerian Pidgin English as there is less/no need for it. Due to their Arabic/Islamic influence, they are also less receptive of Westernisation. However, in Southern, Western and Eastern Nigeria where there are more languages and dialects, Pidgin English not only exists but is dynamic, constantly changing. The most dynamic being the South-South region. If you travel out of Nigeria for a few months and return, there will be new words and phrases to learn. It changes that fast! The older generations tend to speak 'traditional Pidgin' while the younger ones keep tabs on the new slang words and phrases. Hence, older Nigerians would say 'I wan sleep,' while it's the younger ones who would say 'I wan crash.' I don't think any grandmas or grandpas envision 'crashing' onto a bed after a hard day's work! Older Nigerians would say 'I dey komot Nigeria' (I am leaving/emigrating out of Nigeria) while younger Nigerians might say 'I dey japa,' where 'japa' is slang for emigrating. I say this to explain that some of what our Nigerian brother in the video is saying is Nigerian slang. It is therefore culturally derived and specific to a context. Hence Nigerian Pidgin English varies from region to region and also across generations. If you had older speakers in the video, they might have used 'more traditional' words and phrases. Same with those who speak 'King's English' and those who don't. The 'King's English' speakers might speak a 'posh' variety. ❤
