Interesting thing is i wonder if you could almost do this already if you have some of the other vsl products. People will bound to already have smaller sections and solos that they could layer and get the exact same effect. Love your teaching manner Guy. The lecturer we all needed at Uni and never got.

@@ThinkSpaceEducation I would really like to get my hands on some VSL stuff at some point but it is getting the funds and CPU resources to run them haha. But they sound real high quality from I have seen. I have Spitfire Solo Strings but they are so buggy and destroy my computer and Studio One, they cause problems on projects all the time! They sound great and work in literally anything which is why I haven't moved on but I am beginning to lose my patience with them and actively seeking other solo string libraries.

Hello Guy, well you explained the library better than VSL themselves. Congrats for that! My question: I own the Synchron Strings Pro and wonder if the big set of Strings in the Duality is better than the Pro or not - what do you think? and for sure the small section of the Duality is really cool ...
@ThinkSpaceEducation

It's different. Duality has lept very high up my go to strings list - if you already have pro? Not sure unless you can pursuade Paul at VSL to do a crossgrade offer!

16:12 I think you're dead right, Guy. The best libraries for making music with are the ones you HAVE, not the ones you WISH you had. My only library (not counting freebies) is BBCSO Core. Which is a great allround library, and I'm certainly making use of it. It would be nice to have BBCSO Pro, and any number of other libraries; the spirit is willing, but the pocket definitely isn't. So I'm making the most of Core. I'm in the middle of realising Bartok's 3rd Piano Concerto, a work I had always wanted to play. Now that I have my own private orchestra (Core), I'm doing it!! So far, I only have one track out using Core. kzbin.info/www/bejne/e3fOmZ6Ods1jm9U . I just read a comment on Facebook about it this morning. The commenter wondered which part I had played! She hadn't realised that I had played everything, and hadn't realised that the orchestra she was hearing was actually a Software orchestra! I regarded that as very high praise, if people didn't know it was a software orchestra!
@ThinkSpaceEducation
@ThinkSpaceEducation Жыл бұрын
That's a really nice piece well done! I love BBC Core - its the library we recommend to all our MA students. The only problem with Core is the lack of things like Bass Clar but you can add that from elsewhere.
@CraigRodmellMusic
@CraigRodmellMusic Жыл бұрын
@@ThinkSpaceEducation Exactly. Core is an absolutely fantastic tool for a hobbyist composer like myself. Core has effectively given me my own private orchestra, whose sole job is playing my music. Beethoven never had that luxury. Yes, there are missing members, but these can be added from other sources as needed. I, too, have been recommending Core to anyone who wants their own orchestra. Thank you for taking the time to read and reply to my comment, as well as listen to my piece.

When you mess up at 6:29, I thought that sounded really interesting. Now I was wondering, when you fix errors like that, is it because you think it sounds wrong? Or do you remove it for the sake of simplicity for the video? If it's the latter, I get it; you need to make a video within a certain amount of time and can't always faff around. But if it's the former, then maybe you could try leaving mistakes in sometimes and see where it leads? There's been a lot of times in these sorts of showcase videos where you're improvising something and then you "mess up", and it ends up sounding super colorful and I like it a lot. But then a second later you go back and erase it. It's a little disappointing, because those moments of error usually make something vastly more interesting than keeping the music strictly diatonic all the time. "Happy accidents", as Bob Ross would say. Anyway, I've been watching your videos for a long time and I love what you do, lol :D Just thought I'd comment on something that I've noticed repeatedly throughout the years on different videos.

My question is - with all of the tech out there, is it intentional that all software is forced to make strings sound cheap by contract? I doubt these players would enjoy having their sounds duplicated which would allow BBC, Hollywood etc., to not need them anymore.

Sample orchestration will never be as good as an actual live orchestra. It can get close, but a live orchestra adds that extra 20% or so, that just makes it sound more special.

Main problem with VSL is that you need a lot of space, cpu and ram. Total blown up that was guilty 20 years before but is not state of the art in the days now. Another problem is their updates are cost effective and in general you need every Libary twice. Because of iLok to have same flexibility as with other companies. They have their protection changed 2016 to Steinberg, than after a very short time to iLok again additional costs. And they need resources without end. My DAW Musik Server production Server is now 4xE7 Xeon with 60 cores… 1.5 TB Ram and 480TB Storage Space . No wonder they are not the first place in Film and Game productions. I guess it’s more than 20 years ago that their libaries was used in a noticable Hollywood project. Those that plan to go with them look extra for extraordinary hardware. Just did post into the creative producers resources a project . One of the biggest European dealers send for just the shipping costs their old HP, Dell, IBM, Cisco Hardware up to generation 8. Rest of the hardware goes end of next week to the Metal Press. Do not beleave guy use just a little consumer PC… The it behind is since years enterprise. Some picture of my storage server behind the link photos.app.goo.gl/Gh7t4XaR2Dj9G1To8

1.5TB RAM? Does such a device exist? I have never heard of anything capable of supporting RAM higher than 128GB or any SSD supporting more than about 8TB of storage - HDD no longer cuts it due to being very slow. I am talking about the desktop form of the mac from 2021 aka the iMac maxed out with 4 x 32GB memory boards - the device won't take memory boards with more than 32GB RAM - 4 x 32GB RAM = 128GB RAM.

I know some of them are absolutely enormous. The full version of this is 200gbs or something. Back in the days of the Akai sampler 64MBs went a long way.

@@ThinkSpaceEducation see we use here with a larger community things different. So in fact I am busy to coordinate a little project until end of next week. A big Server supplier clean his magazines for next generations. Until end of next week Servers with ECC DDR3 and 40 GBe network need to be shipped worldwide. The hardware is a gift and we have only to pay the shipping costs. Advantage you can Stack servers and Switches. For such use VSL is ok. Main problem of this company in my mind is their support and their marketing. Flexibility is not a known word and if you make a summary the best deal for a customer is not to go. All in all this have nothing to do with a sound quality if you like it. In fact as customer at least there is no long term calculation possible. Changing their policy 2016 to Steinberg Dongle to now iLok a company with a bad reputation since a long time and a lots of concerns… how long they stay there with a total customer unfriendly system? 2 years? 4 years? Than it’s better to decide for a different company. It’s better to go for to choose for a little less quality in Sound. That they are not used since 20 years in a major film project say all.
