Trivia: The temperature was 5 degrees lower than Tokyo in summer and it was such a pleasant day! When I visit Karuizawa, Prince Shopping Plaza had always been my destination and I used to come home right after shopping there. But it was my first time to go over to Kyu Karuizawa and I had a lot of fun! Like I mentioned in the video, Karuizawa is well known as the place where the former emperor met his wife but I didn't know the legendary tennis court where they met was so close. Many rich people own a resort house there and it's fully understandable why they do. I wish I had one there too! 😄

Karuizawa is the Gatlinburg of Japan or conversely, Gatlinburg is the Karuizawa of Tennessee. We had a house in Karuizawa and we spent 2 months there every summer growing up in the 70s. Some of the buildings in the Machi are still the same, but with different stores in them. The tennis courts and Union Church haven't changed a bit. I used to hang out in the koban in the triangle at the foot of the Machi. Bored teen hanging out with equally bored cops. 45 years later nothing has really changed, except the outlet mall. Outlets are the worst no matter which country you're in. 😂

I did this same thing in 2016 but I walked from the JR station, north on 133 to the mall on Church Street and headed back. My video seemed boring so I never posted it. But you had me glued to the screen and missing Japan so damn much..... Arigato gozaimasu for the video. You made me cry happy tears! It also made me very happy to see Marilyn Monroe still outside the Americana shop on 133! When I showed that photo to everyone they thought I took it somewhere here in the US! LOL! When I came across that I could stop smiling! My only regret is that the Church Street sign on the North side if the mall had been taken down the year before I arrived 😢

I really liked this video. It looks like a nice place too live. It would be more interesting if you walked down through streets where people lived. This would show people around the world, what Japanese homes looked like.

Karuizawa is a summer resort town. Most of the homes there are summer homes that are empty for the vast majority of the year and are not representative of the typical Japanese home. They are more like English manors with large, wooded, and moss covered yards. It's kinda dead after the crowds leave at the end of August and doesn't get fired up again until the next June through August. Trust me, it's pretty boring in the winter. Our family did have a summer house there (our house was more cabin in the woods than English manor 😂), and we spent 2 months there every summer growing up in the 70s. Karuizawa is like my second hometown. I had an amazing childhood.

Looking for a city where I can read books and just bum around...this summer. Do you think 4,5 days in Karuizawa is too long? Should I stay in Tokyo and go to Karuizawa as a side trip?

If I were you, I could stay there for 5 days just relaxing but if it's your first visit, what about starting with 3 days or so to see if Karuizawa really fit to your preference?
