Do you know if this works with a phase 1 (1995 impreza 2.2 4eat) transmission?

Need to have the 2 transmissions open next to each other for compatibility. You'll see what will fit or not.

Have you looked into the new Torq locker that came out for subarus? what do you think?

It works as intended. You just have to be careful in situations where a tire will lift. Sudden lockup will break axles. That is the same for guys who upgrade the rear diff to CUSCO clutch LSDs. This is why I prefer a locked diff. Don't need to wait for lockup.

@@FuJiNF Thanks for the Reply. I love offroading with my SG foz but i dont like when i have to go extra fast just to get up certain hills. The torq locker looks pretty good for what i want, i just don't know how i'd like it as a daily driver.

Did you need to replace anyting else or did that just work when you reinstalled the transmission?

Direct swap on the transmission. You'd have to figure out the lockup switch to engage the clutch pack. Find the wire for your year, put a switch on the wire. Some people have gotten creative to adding resistors so to not throw a trouble code from the tranny. I know what code it's throwing so i don't mind the flashing ATF light. I just cycle the ignition key off/on after the obstacles.

now that you have driven both kinds of trans setups, which do you prefer? do they both have their ups and downs? what is most noticeable about the change in the way transmission works?

I wished the VTD was standard on all Subarus automatics/ CVT/manual transmission, excluding the DCCD on the STI. It really is all ups as fast as performance. On throttle it's more neutral, no more front wheel spin on turboed Foresters while hard acceleration out of turns. Hard launches are much better with less front wheel spin. Less stress on the front axles because power is now shared mechanically with the rear. The only change is now it powers both front/ rear all the time. This you can feel when you take off from a snow covered road. Factory multi clutch transfer plate waits for front wheel spin then grabs and torque is split to the rear. The front of the car will start to drift first which ever way the road is slanted then the rear once the transfer clutches grab. The VTD however powers all wheels and the whole car starts drifting. It reminds new of the manual transmissions because they run a viscous coupling center differential.

@@bharch1751 the speed sensor that reads the drum of the original multi plate clutch pack will read the sprocket on the output shaft of the VTD diff. However because of the teeth count difference the non-VTD TCU will throw a trouble code. You can either swap in a VTD TCU from FXT Sports or BajaXT into your existing 04-08 Forester or just add/ cut power to the transfer duty solenoid depending on your year. If the TCU isn't compatible say if using the VTD diff in a 00 Forester/Impreza, you'd have to do the FWD fuse install and put a switch on the wire for the transfer duty solenoid. The older year transmission remove voltage to engage the clutch pack where as the newer say 04 Forester adds voltage. So you're either AWD with auto lockup with VTD TCU, or AWD with manual lockup. I would rather have the choice to lockup with either to help with situations where i need front and rear to spin the same all the time. Wheel spin means momentum loss.

@@FuJiNF Thank you for all the info that you're sharing. it was very helpful while i was doing the replacement of my mpt to vtd some time ago. But now i believe that i toasted my center clutch discs of the vtd and i read that at some point you added one more cluth, was this a succes?

@@Panmei943 the thick spacer is the thickness of another disc and plate. I used the best looking disc plate along with a new clutch pack when i put together my VTD swap. Much more grabbing force.

Great, im going to swap MPT to VTD . I just confused. What's the oem number of clutch plates?There are some different options for the thickness of the clutch plates. Thanks in advance :)

Any tips on removing the planetary gear from the donor transmission? Figure I'd ask before I tried anything

You will need to lightly pry evenly around as you rotate the diff if it's difficult to slide out. Some slide out easy, some need a little help.

@@thefisch1332 WRX will not work. Find from 04-06 BajaXT. If not just make a simple switch. Most times in slippery dirt/ mud/ snow the AWD will get you through no problem. Only when the surface has large dips/ruts that will result in lifting tires off the ground will needing to lockup the center diff is needed. Another would be during icey snow/ ice where you don't want the rear to over power on throttle.

FuJiNF get your self a dual range 5 spd kit with 20g center diff. It can even stay 4.44. FoxImports

Correct, that too. Lol I still have a brand new VTD clutch pack, gasket, & tailshaft seal sitting on the shelf for the next VTD conversion.

@@FuJiNF Thank you for your offer, I already have my VTD but the only thing I will like to know is the 2 shim rings that go in the back. How necessary are both of them? I have the 0.5 one, the 0.2 was damaged.

@@betto9gdl that'll determine how well the gears of the tailshaft meshes with the planetary gears. If it is within the window, no big deal. The only time they really rotate is when the rears or fonts are really spinning. At that point the clutch pack would have engaged if you have the TCU. No TCU and no switch to lock it and the gears will just spin when you over power the tires. If normal driving, the whole center diff rotates as one. When you give throttle, torque load pushes the VTD diff towards the rear due to the angle of the gears. So that shim thickness keeps the teeth meshed together.
