Love that you put a test like this up. I’ve gotten away from imports more and more over the last half decade or so, but back when I was building my boosted Hondas I always wondered about the Edelbrock manifold. A ton of guys were running them and but I never personally used that piece or tuned a build with on bolted on. I typically stuck to Skunk2 manifolds and even always had good luck with some factory Honda units but the Edelbrock was always something I was curious about.

Richard, I own a del sol with a JDM B16A SiRII with a P30 intake and I can tell you this - this engine is incredibly well designed. Who tries to change the stock intake, camshafts etc must know very well what is doing. As it is as stock, it's perfect.

Also, I know many people who went with the Victor X manifold on their turbo Honda drag cars, but I always went with a Skunk2 manifold. I have a fully built LSVTEC turbo that makes 709 whp with a Skunk2 3.5L Ultra Race manifold with a S2 90mm throttle body.

Should have posted up the IAT differences between the two manifolds. From my experience going from a 70mm throttle+skunk2 pro, which I think has a 1.8L to 2.0L plenum(long runner) to a 90mm throttle+ skunk2 ultra race with the 2 litre spacer giving a total of 5.5litre plenum(short runner) there was an IAT drop from 40°c/104°f to 30°c/86°f with the bigger plenum. But you're right the motor felt sluggish on the low cam but boy did it haul ass switch'n over from the 190°dur to the 270°dur, 12.7mm/.500 lift. What I found in the logs was that it wouldn't reach above 100%VE (98kpa) till the vtec point (101kpa) 5200rpm so I did some research on Helmholtz resonance and the relationship between large plenums and tiny(bottle neck) openings. Found out that going such a large plenum of 5.5 litres required a much smaller throttle opening, hence there was a larger "AIR SPRING" with a larger plenum. So I got a pvc plumbing reducer that was 90mm to 65mm in diameter but the 65mm section was only 2'inch long with 1 foot of 65mm diameter pvc pipe, as I read somewhere that for peak torque at 6000rpm you need a ram at least 13'inch long and going 1.7'inch shorter would push the tq peak higher 1000rpm and obviously 1.7'inch longer would bring it on 1000rpm earlier. but I wanted to shift that higher so you couldn't feel "the drop off" so I ditched the ram and just left it with the 65mm opening. which I hid in side a 100mm aluminium heating duct(my cold air intake lol) and viola! I picked up 7kpa (105kpa) from 2500rpm all the way out to 9500rpm. I couldn't believe this thing was naturally boosting it's self with 0.5psi of boost lol. And the injector duty cycle% 310cc injector and 55psi on the fuel regulator.(AFR) had to be corrected 7% at cruise, 18% partial throttle and from 76% to 97% at 9500rpm WOT. Which was a 22% increase in fuel required at the peak. Which tells me there was an increase in 22% air flow at the peak given the same AFR. 14.2:1cr,skunk2 tuner3 cams, b20v, 93octane, pro manifold was 211hp> 240hp same setup with the larger manifold with the IAT drop and the help of Helmholtz boosting.👌

@@tommylyeah your welcome brother. Yeah with greater volume of any gas (air) in this case it takes more time to heat up at idle. And once you crack the "can" open, at WOT it just cools so much quicker and to a lower temp as there's just more room for the air to expand inside a larger plenum. Maybe with adjustable length runners like in a lsx "banana" manifold I could of picked up more low to mid range torque. But "RAM" diameter × length also plays a part.

I just found out today nissan has twin screw superchargers available for the qr25 engines made available by the new qr25der supercharged hybrid found in infinitys and nissans. They rate the supercharged 2.5 qr engine at the same horespower as a 3.5 vq. You can find these blowers affordably online and it should bolt on to any 2.5 altima, sentra, or other nissan/infinity vehicle.

To be fair, your using an intake manifold design that's more ideal for peaky big turbo, 600+ HP motors, with a turbo kit made for a much more linear, lower HP. Same thing happens when your taking running say 2" hot side IC piping and 2.5" cold, vs the guys that run full 3". Unless your running massive massive power, there's no need. The pressure drop and extra time to fill the piping and manifold before you start getting positive pressure is drastically increased, and therefore, laggy.

For example, lets say: - Honda B/K series engine - 11:1 vs 13:1 (similar piston weight, because lighter piston make more power) - Same internal engine (rod, crank, valvetrain, etc.) - Same fuel (98 RON/ 93 US octane) - Same ECU Thanks

being a stock engine and a b-series I'd assume this engine will detonate very soon? with those power figures, boost numbers and stock internals I just don't see it lasting long. I have to ask are your engines built to handle the numbers you show, or do you just give it all she's got on the dyno,then detune it for longevity?
@timothybayliss6680
@timothybayliss6680 2 жыл бұрын
The stock b16a had 10.2-10.4:1 compression. A completely stock engine could probably run on 87 octane if it was newer and not all full of carbon with 140f dyno water in it. He was running a mix of 100 and 91. Its pretty unlikely to knock on the dyno with good gas if someone is paying attention. Lots of the tuning that richard does, especially newer stuff, is all done with E85 from a station close to westech. Most of what he tunes is an optimised tune to make the most power and thats pretty safe with that fuel. I dont ever remember Richard doing an octane limited dyno run on a boosted engine.
@richardholdener1727
@richardholdener1727 2 жыл бұрын
It won't (and didn't) detonate on the combination of water temp, air temp, octane, boost, AF and timing we ran. It would last a long time at this power and boost level with proper timing and octane. For street use, I would at least add ring gap.

I know it’s totally the wrong size engine, but would would something like a mini bike with a small 212cc motor have such a “short” intake runner? The carb is slapped directly to the head with maybe 2.5” to the backside of a valve. Most mini bike engines without heavy mods won’t be revving over 5k. So wouldn’t they want a longer runner so they can make use of that torque? Perhaps it’s merely for packaging reasons. Idk a bit of a tangent but I’d love to see how it would work out for our budget DIY people that use mini bikes and motorcycles as our engine building
