The square root is always positive, according to the usual definition. (If you’re looking for both roots, you need to write ±√ ). Sora kinda explains it in the video

The plus/minus thing is generally just a shortcut used to write out the roots of a quadratic equation in one place. In that scenario you'd have x²=49, which is different from x=√49 and has two roots defined as x1=(-b-√D)/2a and x2=(-b+√D)/2a. The plus/minus is then used for convenience so that you can write ±√D instead of duplicating everything else, but it doesn't come from the √ square root itself.

Check out some blackpenredpen videos! He's made multiple explaining this exact thing (including his second most recent video at the moment, explaining common math mistakes), but basically, if you're messing around with an equation and create the square root yourself, then it's +/-. For example, if you're given x^2 = 49 and want to find out what values of x will satisfy the equation (aka, ALL square roots), then it's both -7 and 7. On the other hand, if you're simply given sqrt(x), then it's only the positive root.

That's not how roots work... You can't have a -ve root because (+)7*(+)7=49, and (-)7*(-)7=49 as well, you can't get a negative answer from these, and since -7 and 7 are different numbers, multiplying them together is not the same as squaring 7 or -7.
