But also "This is a pen" or "Kore wa pen desu" was what the Japanese Government was using as a strange campaign to say speaking English would spread germs and therefore covid more than speaking Japanese. Well, that particular recording is pretty dreadful, at least. Most dialects of English, the voiced/unvoiced stop pair is Weird. It should be a very straight forward distinction: vibrate vocal chords, y/n? Except when the answer is yes most dialects don't actually start the vibration until the sound is almost over. Of course, while some languages have some unvoiced vowels, English doesn't, so that late voicing blends into the next vowel, which then gets lengthened... Which works just fine right up until the voiced stop is at the end of the word (actually, sometimes it works even then, as the voicing from the vowel just bleeds over so you don't have the late start issue to begin with) Except that's still fine, because the unvoiced stops aren't just unvoiced, they're also aspirated! An audible extra puff of air is released as they are said! (Except if it's word like star, where the preceding s in the syllable suppresses it) ... To bad low quality mics just don't register the aspiration and audio software is prone to filtering it out as 'noise' it set up incorrectly. Sat and sad sound quite distinctly different in person, but are almost indistinguishable in the video (to the point of seeming to flip every time she hit the button to play it). Duolingo has issues.
