I'm Angela, a user experience and graphic designer who just so happens to be visually impaired! I was born with a rare eye condition called Aniridia. I recently finished graduate school getting my Master of Design. My research was focussed on inclusive design, universal design, accessibility. absolutely! but i would add a caveat: 8-dot computer braille is "Just a font". Developers just need to make sure that ASCII text works; and they can ignore renders to Braille or Audio completely. Every person can learn 8-dot computer Braillle. On Orbit devices at least, it's the default (yay!). But everywhere that there is translation of any kind; the translation is always full of bugs. It's so hard to translate from plain text to braille, that the translations are always buggy. On an Orbit Reader, plain txt files downloaded from Project Gutenburg have surprisingly buggy handling of things like double-quote. txt file renditions should be 100% literal ASCII, other than rendering line breaks, tabs and spaces by default.

note that I am not suggesting Grade 1 UEB. 8-dot computer braille needs 7 dots for output at a minimum. That means making 8-dot cells standard. You get your contraction out of not making simple punctuation consume multiple cells; where UEB1 is highly disrespectful of punctuation. The 8th dot would be useful for input, for keys that never show as output, like arrow keys, enter, etc. You sometimes want a completely binary mode to read non-text files, or to just be able to see Tab characters and line breaks literally. Sometimes you need to know that a line break is a instead of just a . The other major reason for standardizing on 8-dot computer braille for everything, is something that nobody likes to talk about: The dignity of having a job that you are good at. Manuals for Braille Displays are absolutely crazy. But if most people using Braille can operate a computer, then why not just make THE interface to a Braille Display, just a bash shell. All these devices run something like Embedded Linux as a Raspberry Pi anyway. Given that, when you turn it on, you should see a login banner that lets you know that you are in a bash shell. Your txt files are sitting in a directory called "txt". You can open and edit these files with vim; a standard text editor optimized for keyboard-only mouseless use. And if you see a brf file, then open the file using a brf file reader; editor. Your UEB2 should be confined to being inside of actual Braille apps. And then something interestnig happens here: sighted people can learn full contracted braille in sighted fonts. Type this: ,hello1 _w6 And it renders to contracted Braille to somebody that uses that as their main language.

I didn’t want to learn braille when they gave me the option as I was losing my vision but later in the future I begin taking courses from hadley end it has approved my braille literacy a lot.

I'm an IT professional who had previously had -8 dioptre lens glasses and then I had a LASIK and after some years again got the -4 dioptre glasses. I am not visually impaired, but I have a disability that affects my tracking and ability to read for long periods of time. It causes a great deal of pain. I use audio formats and text to speech apps. I've just started learning braille as an alternative to the visual, so thank you for your resources.

I am learning Braille and I love your video! I am currently taking a braille class through Hadley Institute for the Blind and Visually Impaired. I first started learning Braille at my blind school when I was in 12th grade and I grew to love it very much! I practice Braille everyday so I can keep getting better. I am learning Braille because I want to become a braille educator for blind and visually impaired young children and in case glaucoma limits my sight to where I will have to use braille more frequently.

I learned braille during my oh and M training about a year and a half ago. At that time I really struggled with feeling the braille due to neuropathy of the hands. The only way I could read braille was if it was in jumbo format. As of late I have discovered the orbit reader. With that being said, the crispness of the braille makes it so much easier for my hands to feel. Long story short, as I was looking for a grade to braille resources I stumbled upon this video. What a great explanation! You did such a great job of explaining grade one. I will definitely share this video with cited friends and family. I will also share this video with people who are on the fence about learning braille. I am searching for other videos you have made now. Once again, great job!

When I was a little kid, i had the Pokemon Emerald paperback guide. For the regie part of the book, I remember being confused because the regies spoke using patterns in compact little boxes, using numbers 1 through 6. Being the giant geek i was, i learned to visually read this pattern language without needing the guide. When I became older, I realized that I learned to visually (not tactically) read braille, because of frickin pokemon. I forgot how to visually read braille over the years, but I've decided to relearn it, and actually LEARN what braille is and how it works this time :)

Love the video! I'm learning braille out of curiosity and utilize it where I can. I think you got mixed up explaining the W. The W is a J with a dot 6 added and it's not a vertical flipped R. The W is either a mirrored R or horizontally flipped R. If you flip the R vertical it stays a R. I think. I'm just thinking outloud in my head with my thumbs. Just want to help anyway I can

I'm dyslexic and never learn how to sound out letter was not taught phonics and that's caused a multitude of problems I'm aware that the blind can be dyslexic aswell, still my thoughts are if I could do it it would add a whole nother level to my learning capabilities, as I can not rely on my eye's to feed me the correct information, hearing possibly also but this maybe due to a Poor and inappropriate education next two no English and grammar lessons at all starting from scratch in a entirely new way like Braille may be beneficial for me falling right in my educational needs and hands on approach to learning. The interpretation of Sounds and grammar maybe my biggest problem and unlike most dyslexics I do not have a minds eye so making mental memory a connection between what I see and what I hear is extremely difficult possibly impossible I need to get all 3 senses involved Site touch and hearing in order to spell, I read by memory of what an entire word looks like not sounds like . If you can understand this is how see and think a A b B c C d D and so on. Capitals and people have names the small letters we read and write are the sound, never been able to get the sounds quite right in my mind ear somehow I say words correctly that I can't spell. I hope this information helps someone and they understand it.

I still have vision and can see things so I read and respond to comments like anyone else would. I just use my zoom features and aids to help when needed. Some people who are blind will use screen readers to help them. You can watch more of my videos if you want to learn more!

I want to learn braille, but I'm having so much trouble to be honest. I found this great video series with this guy who created these elaborate images and memory aides, but alas his videos are about 10 years old, and so many of the rules for grade 2 braille have changed. Do you have any suggestions for memory aides? Like he creates these stories that help you visualize a sign that lines up with the letter, for example "detour" for D, so you can imagine a detour sign with an arrow pointing in the same way the "D" braille dots are raised. It helped me memorize the alphabet and the letters, but many of the Grade 2 rules have changed since he made these videos, so many of the aides for Grade 2 don't work. :-( Do you have any suggestions? Either way, thanks for the videos! They're very helpful!

I'm not blind yet but I have dyslexia. I'm hoping that learning Braille will help me read books. I do audio books and write audio to text. I use apps to help me. I want to incorporate the braille into QR code artwork to place in caves/ mountains where my Native American ancestors lived.

Hey I was just curious you said that number three was three four five six one three. Isn't number three the number side plus c. Cuz I believe c is one and four and d is 145. E is one and five f is 124 g is 1 four five h is 125 I is 2 4 and j is 2 4 5. I'm not sure if you're wrong or my code reader book is wrong. Was just asking I go through the Iowa department for the blind and your bump that aren't the same as what I'm learning. At a public comment

Why don’t they just put the dots in the shape of the letters

Letters are visual characters and can be complicated. By using a six dot formation it makes it easier and more consistent. It is easier to feel tactically when it is systematic. Some people can read letters that are tactile like on building room signs so it just depends on the person.

Those are part of Grade 2 Braille and this video was focussed just on Grade 1 Braille. I have other videos that include those.
