Hey! A good tip I picked up is that a comfortable welder is key to being a good welder. All that weight hanging off the back doesn’t look to comfortable. A trick I’ve been shown that helped immensely when I started was throw the lead up and around your neck. And have a bit of excess sitting on your forearm. You should be able to open up your hand and have the torch sit level and balance in the web of your hand without any input from your fingers at all. This way your fingers only have to worry about fine movements and not overcompensating for the whole weight of the torch and hose. Hope that helps!

I really like the tip about letting the torch go to see if it stays put. I'm definitely going to use that. Thanks!

For sure. Toss the cable around your shoulder/neck area, essentially the welder would ideally be on the opposite side of your dominant hand. Not always possible but, easier.

I can’t stand going into welding shops and then telling me nothing works with the HF welders, when that’s clearly not true, they accept almost everything, the fittings are the same… Instead of trying to push a $3,000 welder on me, just tell me what I can use. Especially when almost…almost anything they offer is universal but 3 times times the price..

Great weld man, just try not to weld with a magnetic behind where you weld, it'll mess with your dipping and mess with your weld puddle, try tacking the left and right corner of the t joint and then take away the magnetic

9:55 That looks perfectly good for someone at home. haha. You are being critical but that's how you get better. 👌👌 I have some professional experience and that looks pretty good. The start/stops looks a little ugly but eventually you learn to heat it up starting and taper off quickly at the end, especially if its at the end of the material+weld.

@DrivingForwardBuilds yeah bro. Okay, so what I would do if you have any sheet metal shops near by is try to get some scrap from them. If they have a lunch truck that comes by perfect lol mingle with the guys and make friends. Sheet metal shops have absolute tons of waste. Haha. They also have sheers to easily and quickly cut some coupons for you. If you had access to like 300 1/8inch 2"x4" coupons you could get really good. Then do the same with 1/16 coupons. Haha. Then aluminum. You can work that aluminum down to .040 but that will require tips and on hand training.

I searched vulcan 205 vs Vulcan 220.....not a bad video, I haven't tig welded in years but want to get back into it, but why would the 205 be more expensive than the 220 when it seems there's more to the 220?
@DrivingForwardBuilds
@DrivingForwardBuilds 3 ай бұрын
The 205 is a Tig only unit. It has some big benefits only if you’re really going to tig often. It is ac/dc so you can weld aluminum. It also has a gas solenoid so you don’t have to use the manual valve. Plus pulse and way more control. I’d like one some day.

I bought a vulcan omnipro 220 second hand from marketplace. The previous owner told me that he did this exact upgrade, but there is no gas valve on the torch. Also if you have any questions or want some exercises to get better let me know. You will need that practice material/coupons though. I can give you my email if you're interested and we can talk more. I only really have 1 year of tig welding experience, but it was trial by fire. Cryogenics stainless place 6 months, sheet metal shop 3months steel/stainless/aluminum. This is where I learned this aluminum from the guys there., sheet metal shop as an advanced welder. This 3rd place was badass to get into because I was doing some difficult aluminum. Very cool welding experience I got. The production fabrication cryogenics place was hard core. Wouldn't do it again. I love welding, initially learned because I wanted to do a turbo v8 build in something. It hasn't happened yet and I'm not sure I am really interested in it because of the financials of it. I do feel satisfaction in knowing I could definitely do the welding/fabrication side of it, although I know it would require so many hours. hahaha.
@DrivingForwardBuilds
@DrivingForwardBuilds 9 ай бұрын
The turbo build would totally be worth it, even if it was a net zero after building if you could sell it. Sounds like you gained a ton of real-world experience in the workplace. I was a dealer mechanic so I had no welding as part of my job. Now I am just a hobbyist playing around. The most complicated welding I have had to do has been on my roll cage. That was mig and I practiced for months beforehand on tube to get my speed and setting to a point where I felt comfortable with it.
@Agustin-jo8mv
@Agustin-jo8mv 9 ай бұрын
@DrivingForwardBuilds Nice! I haven't done cages, or much tubing work. I have done mig and I also have an omnipro 220 now. Sold my old alphatig to buy this one. Got this omnipro for $800 with a 120cf tank, vulcan helmet, and a 10lb spool of solid core wire, and welding cart. 😏 haha

@DrivingForwardBuilds 9 ай бұрын
@@Agustin-jo8mv That sounds like an awesome setup. What's your plan for aluminum with the Omnipro? I figure a spook gun with be less expensive than picking up a separate ac machine.
@Agustin-jo8mv
@Agustin-jo8mv 9 ай бұрын
@DrivingForwardBuilds well shit I figured you could AC tig with the omnipro but I actually hadn't thought of that. 😅 I did use a spool gun and helped a neighbor out. The spoolgun was leaving black sut(not ideal, sut indicated that its not being shielded properly, but that seems to be very common. No porusoity in welds though.), but the welds all looked good. I even tried down some 1/4 plate with bevel, with a 1/16 landing and it layed in there beautifully. Haha. I would probably consider getting a used water cooled everlast if I needed ac tig. Although, I did make my alphatig water cooled. Haha. I used a submersible 1/6hp water pump($65), and a ck worldwide watercooled torch. Worked well, but you need additional switches to turn the pump on when needed. Water cooled torches are so nice, especially with flex head. Most of the shops I worked at did not have flex head torches but that was an abomination. 😂 The rigid torch leads are almost as bad, but non flex heads are a much bigger problem. Haha
