They both used four of the the Rolls Royce Olympus engines, although Concord used a variant that had an afterburner because it needed the extra power for super sonic flight. Concord although louder overall, didn't have the iconic howl that the vulcanised did, because of the shape of the air intake ducts.

My favourite was one I saw at Mildenhall & Greenham in the 80's (before Health & Safety got involved). Sadly I can't find any footage on KZbin of it. The Vulcan came along the flightline nice and slow, then pitched up on her tail no more than a couple of hundred feet above the ground, right in front of the crowd. The pilot just stood her hovering there, perfectly balancing thrust and gravity for a good 10 seconds. It was a tad loud, every car alarm for miles could be heard going off :D

@@seanbissett-powell5916 I saw a similar demo from a Vulcan around the same time. This was at British Aerospace HQ near Manchester when they had an air show. My brother worked for them, so we got special passes that allowed us close to the runway. When this pilot did it, he was at around 100 feet and the aircraft sat there for around 10 seconds, and then with the afterburner, it slowly did a vertical climb.

I first saw a Vulcan in 1952. It flew across the end of our school playing field in Darlington at about 4,000ft. An amazing sight at the time, unforgettable.

I used to work with a guy who was a radio operator on one of these things during the Mau Mau rebellion in Kenya, they used to drop bombs well away from villages but close enough to let them know who was boss. He said it used to give him the willies when they used the ground hugging radar because he knew as a radio operator how unreliable valve electronics were. Thanks for your service Mick Seabrook !

As a child we would hear and see them on approach and depart from Hurn airport. I have fond memories of rushing outside into the garden to stare up in awe of this amazing thundering flying wing. Always a stunning sight and sound, never to be forgotten.

I used to watch Vulcans taking off and landing all the time as a teenager in the 70's on a strip of river I used to fish in Lincolnshire which was right near the runway of a Vulcan base. Whilst headshaking at the time for (perceived) "disturbing the fish", how little did I know then that I was listening to aviation 'music' and seeing a true British classic. It really is true; "you never known what you had until it has gone" in a world today where one military jet looks just like the next and in an obligatory mass of grey(s). The Vulcan is a timeless classic and right up their with the Spitfire as an icon of British aviation IMHO.

WERE YOU AROUND WHEN A VULCAN HAD TO SUDDENLY CHANGE FROM LANDING (going too fast to brake in time ) AND TAKING OFF AGAIN ? The A38 Road passes the bottom of the Runnway, and a petrol station was in-line with the road too. All the petrol pumps and fencing was blown over by the blast. Fortunately, there was no fuel stored there; and no vehicles were passing at that time. A disaster avoided.

One of the best videos I have seen of XH558 in the early days of her air show performances and watching from here in NZ I obviously have not had the opportunity to see her in reality but we did get the opportunity to see two Vulcans at the opening of our new airport here in Wellington in 1959 and I was a young lad of 10 then and they were most impressive in their white nuclear era paint scheme. There was unfortunately a very near disaster when one of them flew and attempted to make a landing as scheduled but during the week when the crew had practised this they had been coming in to a southerly wind but on the day the wind was from the north and the crew got caught out by wind shear coming off the hills to their right and the aircraft dipped to the left and caught the left undercarriage leg in soft ground at the extreme end of the runway and it was only extremely good flying and plenty of power that they were able to climb away spilling fuel from the port wing as they did so. They flew the aircraft to Ohakea air force base and made a successful emergency landing and managed to keep the port wing up long enough to reduce speed and come to a stop with the wing on the grass to the side of the runway and after several months of inspection and flying in people to effect repairs it was flown back to the UK and I understand it continued in service.

Goodness that brings back memories. As a child we lived about 2 miles as the crow flies from the Avro facility at Woodford in Cheshire which was the main Vulcan build, repair and maintenance facility. Our next door neighbour worked there. They had these enormous L shaped tubes that the aricraft would be backed up to to do engine tests. The theory was to throw the noise etc. upwards. Didn't really work and several times a week we would hear that noise in all it's glory as engines were tested.

I remember seeing the Vulcan at the Chicago Air & Water Show many years ago. It was a cloudy day with a fairly low ceiling & the plane came straight past the viewing area very slowly & when it got about center stage it hit full power & pulled up at what looked like a 90 degree angle. It was one of the most impressive things I've ever witnessed at an airshow.

Great video. I remember those spiral climb-outs well from the 80's at Biggin Hill. The displays then were so loud! The RAF guys had the power on for most of the display rather than having to nurse her around in later years, awesome stuff.

I've been lucky enough to visit airships all over the country, and the star of the show was always the Vulcan, I was also brought up only a few miles from A V Roes at Woodford in Cheshire, where the Vulcan was made, and spent many a school holiday hunkered down in one of the bunkers at the end of the runway, just to get a glimpse of this iconic aircraft, to me and many others one of, if not the, most magnificent aircraft in British aviation history.

Captures the howl pretty well, but I reckon you’d need a full professional outdoor mic setup to really accurately capture the absolute total assault on your eardrums the Vulcan causes. It’s like the sky and Earth being ripped apart, the roar :D

I was a twelve year old kid living in Scheveningen ( Netherlands) one very foggy morning on my way to fish in the local park when one of these craft came over less than 150 metres high. I only glimpsed it, but it was unmistakable, a Vulcan on very low level patrol over our very flat country.

Most of the random stuff that turns up in my feed really pisses me off. But being sent back to air shows at RAF St. Athens as a child in the '60s when you would feel planes such as this come over low, turning everything dark, then a lightning would follow, stand on it's tail and disappear into the sky. I'm sure that I can smell the fuel again. Thank you.
