How the B52 is still flying and Vulcan is down to one aircraft in the air amazes me.
@lees.40846 жыл бұрын
Alex Brown Simple. The Vulcan couldn't adapt to the low level penetration role as well as the B-52 did. After Soviet/Eastern bloc air defenses got good enough to make high altitude attack little more than a suicide mission, low level attack became the only viable option. Despite the Vulcan's impressive takeoff climb and manouvers, the fact is that it had poor top speed and range when pushed hard at low altitude. It couldn't adapt, so it was retired... It was an impressive and beautiful plane, but it just found itself without a role to fill.
@bulletproofkam79316 жыл бұрын
It's because the Polaris nuclear submarine took over as primary nuclear deterant and the Vulcan was secondary and not needed.

In case anyone is interested, the howl comes from the tips of the compressor blades breaking the sound barrier, while the B-52's screech comes from the tips riding right on the edge of the sound barrier.
@MarsFKA6 жыл бұрын
In fact, the howl of the Vulcan is from high velocity air being sucked into the engines down the long intakes. The air resonates in the intakes. Any jet engine compressor blades that broke the sound barrier would not make an efficient engine - designers tend to avoid such inefficiencies.

@PenzancePete4 жыл бұрын
@Bobby Brady That's because downtown Moscow is circa 1,555 miles from the eastern U.K.where the Vulcans were based. The Vulcan's un-refuelled range with a maximum load was circa 4,000 miles. In 1962 The Vulcan was adapted to carry the Blue Steel stand-off bomb which was the precursor to the cruise missile having a range of 575 miles at a speed of mach 3. This enabled the Vulcans (and the range superior Victors) to launch an attack on Moscow and return - if there was somewhere to return to following the inevitable retalliatory attack(s). The Vulcans and Victors were withdrawn from the nuclear role in 1970 when the Royal Navy's polaris submargerines came into service. The U.K. - unlike the U.S.A. - does and did not need a massively long ranged bomber as the U.K. did and does not consider itself the world police. The U.K. never undertook permanent nuclear patrols like the U.S.A. did. They did however stop the "Chrome Dome" system after the third crash involving nuclear carrying B-52s.

@@joechesters7936 Yes. The B-1B is a more modern bird in all aspects. But they're both designed for a more similar application. The B-58 and the Vulcan came around the same time, then the B-1B around a decade or so later. The comparison made with the B-52 was just a rather unfair and unfortunate one. It's massive with a far longer range and over twice the payload capability (but a 'masterpiece' in its own right). The Vulcan, B-58, and subsequent (and still flying) B-1B were meant for fast, shorter response with agility and speed in mind.

Yep, we Brits knew how to make them, we just didn’t know how to retain them in service like the Americans and the B52. There is no doubt that upgrading the Vulcan would have been an asset not only to Europe but also the Yanks. Anyway, if the yanks can make a plane last 100 years in service,there was no reason that the Vulcan could not also have been extended in service.
