Al Stewart and Laurence Juber perform a new 2016 version of his 1960s song Clifton In The Rain, specially filmed to be shown as a greeting to the audience at the 50th Anniversary celebration of the legendary Bristol Troubadour Club which is mentioned in the song.
Al - just named as recipient of the BBC Folk Awards Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017 - was one of the most popular and regular guest artists at the club at 5 Waterloo Street, Clifton Village, Bristol, which ran from 1966 to 1971 and now has a blue plaque to mark it!

Great post of a great early song of his. Al has always stayed true to his music. No heavy guitar power chords in the late 60's, no disco in the 70's, no synth pop in the 80's, no grunge in the 90's, no rap in the 2000's. His acoustic guitar work , his lyrics and his songs, and that nasally ever British voice never straining, just holding a melody together and telling masterful stories about historical persons and situations, romance, heartbreak, and childhood experiences. His music never gets old. There is always something new during each listen.

I have always loved this song. We used to regularly see Al Stewart at Les Cousins, happy days. One of my favourites, along with Baleeka Doodle Day.

This is one of my fav Al songs. House of clocks and Merlin's time are others that come to mind. Just to mention a few. Greeting's from Canada.

Saw him in Cork Opera House around 2016. Absolutely magical night, one of the most enjoyable gigs I've seen, (and in my 69 years I've been to quite a few). Wonderful, creative accomplished artist with his own intelligent brand of songwriting that sets him apart. Long may he continue to weave his willow strain.

The first folk concert I ever went to, back in '69, featured Al as the start guest. And he doesn't sound a jot different from that time. Brilliant then and still brilliant now.

* I came upon this gem by serendipity. I was merely wanting to listen to Clifton because it has been rattling around the cobwebs of my mind during the past week. I was blessed to video record both Stewart's and Juber's Tucson Kitchen Musician Association performances for my 1990s TV show. I met with them personally - real nice men. *
