This sounds like he's using alternative tuning. He has a capo on the 2nd fret, but it sounds much more similar to when I play on 1st fret with standard tuning.

He is playing with standard intervals and normal chord shapes but the whole guitar is tuned a semitone low - hence the pitch is the same as when you use your capo a fret lower than Al is doing.

Yes, I think you´re right! It also reminds me of the song by Elizabeth Cotten especially in the Joan Baez version.
