Carnivores inspire a range of feelings in people; a sense of excitement, mystery, fear, independence, freedom and wildness. Species such as wolverines, fishers and Cascade red foxes rely on Mount Rainier National Park to provide key habitats and access to adjacent wilderness in the South Cascades Ecosystem. Providing connectivity between protected areas is important to ensure that species will be here for the enjoyment, education and inspiration of this and future generations. In this virtual field trip, Mount Rainier National Park ecologist Dr. Tara Chestnut and UW graduate student Kayla Dreher will discuss the status and unique conservation needs of these three carnivore species and how we monitor them at Mount Rainier to inform park management and Connected Conservation across the landscape.
