VW 1600 DP to 2110 conversion. Lets look at some internal engine parts required to make a 82mm stroke with 90.5mm bore fit inside a New AS41 engine case. This is just an informal discussion out in the garage looking at parts and answering questions. Not intended to be a step by step assemble and run vid. Also a chance to meet my new shop Dog and see some record breaking snow.
I like to share information about how I do things and constantly experiment with my own idea's. My objective is to build more practical horsepower at lower RPM where I spend most of my time driving and have it live as long as a stock factory build in a 4 season car. I'm not after Peak Horsepower and racing. Those engines can be fun but usually don't last very long IMHO.

EZ. I would turn the large case nuts around. You don't want to look at the seal. You want it to work. I used to build motors in the 80s. Learned from a great German teacher. Anything that touched the case. Including base of cylinders. Aviation permatex. No paper. is saturates & squeezes out. Then cylinders pop. As far as thermostat flaps & linkage. In Florida. We put them in the trash can. Colorado weather is a little bit different though. So you may want to keep them. Great videos! p.s. Sealer under all washers. Nothing above. Except 6 case half nuts have built in seals OH and oil pump nuts, Do too.

Hi Ezgz, we've install a lot of centre mount on 1680 & 1776 engines. We found our 1776cc builds ran best with a 44IDF centre mount with 145 mains, 55idles, 160 air correction jets. We still haven't bothered with the preheat tubes yet. But we did find that deck lid stand-offs made it run rough when cold so we removed them and kept the engine closed up. With your open engine compartments I suspect your going to need the preheat tubes connected.
@TheEZGZ

@@TheEZGZ also don't go too small with your venturies. With a, single center mount having a, lot of fast velocity over the venturies makes the carby chill even more. I'd start with 2110cc I'd consider 30 or 32mm venturies. We had a 1776 with centre 44IDF got it running very well with 28mm venturies and no heater tubes connected. But it still had a little issue in cold weather. We changed out the venturies to 29mm and it was perfect!

Hey there EZ, why do you keep saying screen only during break in? All modern engines that are factory full flow still have a screen, FYI.

modern engines have a lot bigger screen and although the stock screen works well enough if you increase the max RPM or run a higher volume pump it can become a restriction.

I disagree, smaller and finer and higher flow pumps and more oil demand, etc. I feel like you may be wrong on this one. But maybe the screen you're talking about is smaller than I imagine.

Added Bearing Life » Added Bearing Life - Technical Information Oil strainer information. An area of extreme importance. The inlet or suction side of any pump is extremely limited in what it can do as compared to the pressure side and should never be impaired in anyway, whereas the pressure side is capable of overcoming a great deal of extra resistance. For that reason, I have not used the stock oil strainer in any of my high performance street or race engines since 1966. I found that it often caused too much restriction on the suction side of the oil pump with a little higher performance and high RPM engines. This problem was traced to oil starvation and all out bearing and/or crankshaft failures from the oil not being able to pass through the stock restrictive oil strainer screen fast enough to provide adequate flow to the pump. Contamination was a concern, however, all of my engines from 1961-on had full flow oil filters protecting the engine. Some concern about metal particles going into the oil pump before filtering was solved when I went to the farm supply house and bought a "cow" magnet that is about 1/2" round by 3" long. I hose clamped it on the outside of the pickup tube extension for the larger sump. I have used this configuration successfully for years over 30 years. For those that do not know, a cow magnet is what they feed the cows to pick up metal (such as broken barbed wire) from the stomach and pass it out of their system. Another concern is the weight of the oil. Remember, the heavier the oil, the less it lubricates. We run 20 weight in our race engines and 10-30 weight in all street engines. Only if the temperature is constantly above 80-85 degrees would I consider 10-40 weight. 5-30 should be used when temperature falls to below 45 degrees. For freezing temperatures straight 10 weight would be my choice. The point is, if bearing life is substandard or failures have occurred, these are items you should be looking at: GB 212 Pickup tube magnet with clamp to attach to outside of deep sump pickup tube. Originated by Gene Berg in 1964.
@fredio54
@fredio54 Жыл бұрын
Gene Berg must be respected, but things have changed in terms of oil tech. VW engines are different but not fundamentally different to any other. Empirical bench testing of heated oil using artificial drive of a real pump and comparable passages would settle this. He makes it sound like larger displacement impacts the oil system when clearly it does not. Racing wise, depends on drag or endurance and budget for rebuilds, but the higher hot weight the better, 60 hot weight is thinner than 10w cold weight.
