at the end of the video I show the head ports. They are not nearly as rough as the video shows. They are not totally smooth either. This is fine. for the DIY....I have done them like this and the results are amazing. Port and polish is a bit better but leaving them a bit rough still works just fine. If you want you can take them to totally smooth and get more out of the engine. FYI

Hey Mike ! the heads on Rambus I did a little more than you , so far nothing has happened . What it did is made the rpm go higher .

Hi Mike really enjoyed your head porting video! I have a few friends that do this, ie… Jeff Denham, Shawn McCarthy, and I’ve noticed that they smooth out the bores with sandpaper to finish. Of course like you, I’m a street guy and now that I’m living 3000 miles away from the guys I know, and years of knowing and understanding and watching, I’m going to consider doing my own! Of course CR and sizes of valves do change what you’re trying to accomplish! 👍😊

I have been wanting to buy The Dub Shop port templates to do my first port job. Great video

Great information. Was curious on gasket? I've used metal ones with slightly raised hump that I suppose crushes to seal. Am I better off using a fiber or standard type gasket instead?

Thanks Mike, I’d like to see a single port version ?

mostly the exhaust ports on them. they are totally restricted. has that heavy shelf and you cant eve get your pinky through there. open up the exhaust to look like these dual ports and it will come alive.

the longer shank burrs,,,4-6in are way easier to use when you get into the ports

Great video Mike. Could you do that with the valves already in ?
@Mikefngarage7 ай бұрын
best to take them out not hard. just need a valve spring compressor. I did some with them in and it did help but not hard to remove them.

@@Mikefngarage thanks for the reply. I'm thinking about getting the big valve heads from Car Craft and doing that, guess I'll need a valve spring compressor tool as well 🤣

Mike, have you ever run a head temp gage? If so do you have a setup you think works good that you could share with me? I'd like one on my new engine and it doesn't need to be fancy, just reliable.

I can appreciate people learning to do things on their own. If you will be doing VWs, learn it w/ good info- the Fisher Book is a good start -How to Hot Rod VWs. What you are doing on the intake is sinful. There is not much to do on the intakes in stock 040 heads. The exhaust side is the restriction on the stock heads. Also - use tallow sticks to lube the bit on that grinder. Judging by the finish on them heads - the bit is jumping around. Maybe - post pics of how you are grinding and people w/ more experience will show you a better way. But kudos for trying -

Do the intake pipes have to be opened to match th open heads? Same question for the exhaust.
@sampatterson42193 ай бұрын
yes look up port matching. use the same same opened up gasket he used for the heads, and grind out the intake manifolds to match
