Shop quote $1100, this was the best deal I could find.
updated:
500 miles and still holding well.
In this video I have a hose that broke where the metal turns into rubber.
I am cutting the metal crimping end from the hose to expose a smooth run of metal hose, I am sliding new hose over this section and using clamps to secure it in place.
This fix will cost less than $100 assuming you will buy all the tools needed.
List of tools at end of video.
Thanks for watching.

If you take a hose that is 3/4” on each end and DON’T cut the hard line, the 3/4” will fit right over the each end. That way you don’t have the hose against the engine. Thanks for the video

I had a similar break at 100 k. I got super lucky as the metal fitting failed . I didn’t need to cut the existing metal tubing. I simply slid the hose over the tubing and clamped it down. We just drove 250 miles on it out of necessity.. we had to do a few 3000 foot climbs too. The PSI is low in the cooling system and there are other portions that are being held on with hose clamps so there’s no reason why this shouldn’t work. Thanks for posting your video. Now I know what kind of work it’s going to actually take to fix this hose.

Thank you so much for the video … saved me !!! We were lucky enough to have the flange pull strait off … didn’t have to replace any hose just slipped it over and applied a clamp … you are a legend 😊

you can actually pull the hose off of the metal tubing. Get some vice grips on the hose collar and pull hard (really really hard). Just did it. Now to get the new hose on....I think clamps are necessary unless I can fit a crimping tool. Access is limited in my 2012 VW CC.

How did it go for you. Cutting it took a while. Either way I think this could be a easy inexpensive fix compared to alternative.

I went a slightly different way. I used a Dremel type tool to split the steel crimp and remove it from the metal pipe. That leaves the pipe with it's original length with a bulged section that will help hold the new hose when a hose clamp is tightened. Deliberate poor design VW. A fix that should cost $10 ends up being quoted at $1,000 or more and those spring clamps are a nightmare. I ended up using water pump pliers to fit the clamp over a similar size piece of wood then vise-grips to lock open the clamp. Fit the air pipe then release the vise-grip - voila! If truth be told, if this hose has failed I fear for the other hoses. A proper fix will be to replace all the suspect hoses.

Hey! dont know your name! but thanks for this video i had the same exact problem on the same place. implaning to do the same. in my case the hose only have a cut on the bottom so i planned to do some kind of patch. like your idea! couple of questions if you dont mind.. - how did you connect the new hose to the older one? what did you use on the inside to clamp it? - did you use some kind of silicone or glue when you slide the new hose to the metal hose to prevent leaks? - did you sand or did something for the new hose dont slide out? or just with the clamps? Thank you for your help. the car is already sold. i talked this to the new owner and he plans to switch the turbo later, so i just need to drive it to his home. this will be so helpfull. Thanks!

Two clamps on the cut metal tubing. One clamp after the bend and one before. As for connecting the hose all you will need is a expander extension to connect those with 2 clamps. Done.

The same problem just happened to my GLI at 100k. Have you had any problems with the band clamp method? I bought the new return line and since I started digging In to replace the line it looks like you have to remove the whole turbo and exhaust manifold to get to the union bolt. Any suggestions?

It has only been days since. So far so good. We shall find out together. Dont get discouraged from cutting the line, it was hard because i could only use about .5 inches of the saw blade. Put a clamp after the bend on the metal line and before it just to make sure its secured well. Also, Put some type of also put some metal or aluminum between the engine and the new section of line to help disperse the heat. Make sure you are using the correct coolant for the car too. Green coolant corrodes vw and audi components for some reason.

@@rsykes4 I ended up selling it. No word. I have a feeling its just as strong as it was. Make sure to get some type of aluminum for shielding. Against the engine. Dont get discouraged from taking a wild to cut it off. Just do the tip so you can slide the hose over the curve and put 2 clamps on there.
