There is easier way to dry underlay and battling (soundproofing) without doing any work or hiring equiipment. Simply use your air con and heat together as a dehumidifier. Turn your A/C on, turn recirc on, direct the heat to the front/rear floor, select hot, and keep the windows closed. The recirculating air gets hotter and hotter, carrying more and more dampness with it. To get the dampness out of the car but retain most of the accumulated heat to do more drying work, the air passes over the a/c condensor under the dash and the water is pulled from the air, and dripps out the a/c drain beneath the car. Squeezing the carpet from above by pressing down on it through a microfiber cloth can lift the bulk water, then 40 minutes to an hour of driving like above can work wonders. You'll know its working because your windows won't steam up despite have the hot air to the wet floor and no open windows or vents. If you doubt that a/c and heat can work together, know that this is how fast windscreen demisting works, the only difference is you are sending airflow to the floor, and in fact this procedure will work even if you have to select windscreen (which generally you don't have to do).

Thanks for watching Anthony H and passing on your scientific knowledge. Definitely sounds a lot easier than taking the seats out and drying the underlay indoors on your radiators! b33zo

Thanks for watching Luis. If you find that the hood release cable grommet is not seated properly in the bulkhead you have found the proble. Just gotta dry the carpets out then... ATB b33zo

Hi, was the issue not partly caused by leaves and dirt blocking drainage holes? Where you add loads of silicon to block the holes doesn’t this prevent water passing through the car’s drainage channels? I have the same problem but on the passenger side front footwell.
@b33zo
@b33zo 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching ntube7. Yes the leaves and other crud are best kept away from the drainage holes. The issue here was that the bonnet release cable has to travel from outside the 'cabin' to inside. Where it passes through the bulkhead a tightly fitting foam grommet is in place to create a waterproof barrier. I dislodged this and as a result rainwater was able to find its way into the footwell behind the carpet. So yes, a DIY fail. ATB b33zo

Did you remove all the sound proofing by removing the dashboard? My passat has a similar issue and scratching my head as to how best to remove the sound proofing.
@b33zo
@b33zo 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Jonathan. No I definitely didn't remove the dashboard! The soundproofing material ends behind the pedals in the footwell and up the sides just behind the plastic trims so nothing behind the dashboard as far as I remember. The soundproofing a very complicated shape and as it was all soaking well I 'sacrificed' it during removal. Hence my bespoke method of using carpet as a replacement. Good luck and the car will be much nicer when you've sorted out the leak. Definitely! ATB b33zo

As you already have the wipers off it's an easy job to remove the wiper motor and linkages. That gives you great access from above. You could have likely pulled the grommet to its proper postion and not ended up with it looking like a Bradford student house shower!

Hey there. Thanks for this. I have a 2004 jetta with the same problem. SEEMS like the rubber hood cable grommet (which was half eaten away by rodents :( ) is the source of the leak for me as well. When you used silicone to DIY the leak the cable was still able to slide/move? Would rather not try to pull the cable and replace the grommet if i can avoid.
@b33zo
@b33zo 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Daniel thanks for watching. I was lucky in that the rubber grommet was still usable but just dragged out of position. I believe the grommet is split so that it can be replaced with the cable in position. Probably cost 50p in Ebay. Silicone didn't work as a replacement for the grommet due (I think) to the slight movement in the cable when the hood is opened. b33zo

@@Nikolaben2 hmm. not totally sure yet. there was moisture on the floor that I have been passively absorbing/driying with wood shavings and it seems like its taking longer than it should and that the leak must not be fixed. i am not using the car right now and if i was i would probably have a better sense of it. i will update; thanks for checking in!

I know you have rectified your problem, however, a simpler remedy is available if you have a similar problem in the future, hire a dehumidifier for 24 hours, retrorrestore, also on KZbin, had a vauxhall with a wet interior, the dehumidifier did a lovely job......

Thanks BMLM for watching and for colourful comments. Moisture (other than occasional leprechauns wee) could have been transferred through to the back via the soaking wet front footwell underfelt.
