Back in the 70s in my 65 bug I got tired of flat footing it everywhere I went, so I turned it into a 1679 with dual port heads that I ported and threw a transmission in with 4.12 gear and a .89 4th gear . I had 185/80/15 tires on the rear and this transformed that car into a whole different beast especially with a the track only cam and dual carbs. I was putting myself through school and working and commuting over a hundred miles a day. I only had 45 minutes to get from school to work so I used to cruise 75-80 to get to work everyday. I realized that not all cylinders run at same temperature and after getting tired from doing valve adjustments I checked valves just after adjusting and found hot cylinders had different clearances at operating temperature. Wrote down the difference on each cylinder and when adjusting cold did individual adjustments that made engine run so much quieter. I could go 6k-8k before re-adjusting. I've just saw on Power Nation recently them adjusting valves to zero tolerance 😳, I at least back in the day left a 1/2 thousands. I was doing it cause all the mileage and they did it for performance 😆 If you increase engine size and are using a 1200-1300 cc cooling fan you're asking for trouble. 1500 and 1600cc engines have wider fan blades. You start going crazy with 2.4L engines and 10.5 compression ratio you better start looking for a porsche style cooling fan.

My baja has a 437, the tire size is 235/75 R15. Freeway here is 80 / 85 and it can do it with plenty of Throttle left. But its not a stock engine.

2800-3000 rpm also gets you good mileage with dual webers but the downside is that's the rpm where it begins to get loud kinda like vtec

Owners manual says 72 mph top speed for a 40. Top speed and cruising speed same speed. It also says the faster you go, the more the motor likes it. More fan I guess. Good test on condition of engine if you can do 72. Love stock 28 carb and big cap dizzy. Smooth, like new. It also says, 55 is where you get the 32 mpg rating. Cheers

I don't know what rear gear I have. I'm running 27x8.5r14 tires and it seems to love shifting at the factory shift points, and seems like it's all out of acceleration around 70 comfy at 60 mph, any clue What ratio I have it's got twin 34s on a 1600. Thank you

Hi, found this video useful still one final question. I have a 67 with a replacement 1600 dual port. Live in Miami, lots of highways. Not a daily driver. Bad transmission found a 1960 from a KG possibly a 4:37 would you recommend it or go with a 4:12/3:88?

either one but if you can afford it the 3.88 is the ticket

I have a tire question. What do you think would be the tallest and maybe widest tire i could put on stock 15" 1963 beetle rims. Car is stock height. I just want to maybe get more miles per hour on the hgihway with a taller wheel right now i have 165 80 r 15 as the tire size thanks love your site

Premium fuel is good but if you can find ethanol free that’s better

Ethanol makes it run cooler, just gotta enrich the fuel mixture properly

mine have 1600 cc not original, wants third gear immediately. it starts from stop on second gear. I drive it by listening the engine sound. if I put the proper gear the engine get quit.
