I think I would make a template of the opposite side first, then I would compare the crashed side to that as I'm pushing/pulling the other side out. Using a piece of 2x4 under the portapower piston would help to distribute the push more evenly. Then probably weld a few pins to the exterior and begin to easily pull the dent while tapping with a hammer and constantly comparing to the opposite side template until I got it nearly perfect.

I was always told to work a dent out in the reverse of how it was done. IOW, start working the edges out first, then work towards the center of the initial impact. Of course it helps if you don’t have anything blocking access from behind. Nice to see the black hot rod Bug again! That’s the car that got me started on your channel…

You should read the old book The Key to Metal Bumping. It’ll tell you to reverse the damage by in doing it in the reverse order in which it occurred. Size it up figure what was hit first, from which direction, and what crumpled last. From there you work backwards. Also for the bits that are blocked, if you can fit it in there, try a kids basketball deflated, wedge it in there and blow it up.

Nice to see you fixing the bus. Listwn: when pushing out big sections like that nose, use some 2x4s to spread outthepush and for the base of the Jack so you don't put in more dents. Also, when it jas come out some you needtocounter hammer the areas around the pushed part to relieve the stress in the metal. Best of luck.!

Thanks Straight Ahead ✌😎 PS I had that same car and color till in 1978 one friday night in the rain leaveing work from WB going to rocky's Bar & grill to have a beer and hambuger a guy pull out in a cad in the intersection ! Hit me head on ! Just my side ! It was dark and raining ! He or she left . I could only trun left but still go straight ! So i had to plan my rout to Rocky's making left truns only ! Good beer and Bugers !!! Got home . weeks later i had a big tree in my front yard ! I put a big long chain to the tree and to the front driver side wheel ! Had the bug right next to the tree about 15 ft of chain put in reverse put the peddle to the floor ! It only took two times ! I drove it for a year more ! One saturday at Rocky's a AT&T guy saw it and bought it from me for more then what paid ! He new about the car . Man Love that Bug

I learned you should pop a dent out in the reverse order in which the dent was made… starting from the most shallow edges and ending at the deepest point of the dent.

11:30 I love the original color with the ivory controls. The seat IS perfect! That's going to be a sweet car when you paint it that color again. A tan/ivory top would top it off. I was 7 when that car was new!

You made good improvements to the kombi front. I was thinking it might be useful to get a panelbeating dolly between porta power and the panel, so the push isn’t so localised. Just a thought. The 58 rag is killer 5150, I’d have the same plan you do, make it a driver and only original once. Love your work.

You can always use a block of wood between the metal and the jack to spread the force out over a larger area.

@@5150mxVW For odd areas a piece of wood can be cut with a sabre saw to match the contour that you want to achieve. In bodywork, you do what works! 😀

I think for someone who has never done anything like that before then you did very well. I know there's not much room in there but if you can get a block of wood or some flat 1/2 inch steel plate that would be a big help. Try not to get 'mountains" so just push a section so far then move on to another section. The popping is good but try to imagine how it will look when finished, compare with another bus if you can. Your aim is to have the minimum amount of filler at the end. Hope that helps 🙏. BTW the 58 is coming along very well. Thanks Jason for the updates. 👍 👍

Fortunately he already did all the writing work. 😁 ;-) Please kindly allow me an additional suggestion: You need a pull/slide hammer (like the one vehcor uses). If you don't want to buy one, it's relatively easy to build one DIY. Anyway: Sometimes it's better to pull out dents. But each method absolutely needs a lot of light hammering to take out the stress in the (sheet) metal! By the way: I would have been exactly as eager as you to dent out the front. It was my very first and Instant thought after I saw the orange bus the first time. It simply must've two eyes! 😁 ;-) Best regards, luck and health to all of you.

Hey Jason, you should show a little about how your removing the paint. Cool collection of dubs! Try some wood blocks to distribute the load, with the porta power. I seen it in some video out there. I just got mine too, I have some dents to remediate, Ha! Thanks, you videos are always a joy.

I ordered one of those porta powers while watching the video. Looks pretty handy. I've got a big dent in a truck bed to push out and I tried a bottle jack in the past but it didn't quite work. I thought all those porta power units cost more. That one seems great for the price.

yes, i have a stud gun, that will part 2 ...although I probably made it worse now. I would of liked to pull from the front 1st but wanted to try the new tool out.

Another workable method could have been to tie the bus to a tree, weld some halved rivets to the sheetmetal and jank the front out with a come along attached to a 2nd tree.

Use some large 3 or 4 inch washers and tack weld them to the areas on the Bus's nose where it needs pulling out. Use a come a long and a tree or similar and pull all that out.

also use heat as you go tap down on highs gently while pushing some cuts will ease it also cut on high stretched creases they will never go back. also could buy a panel and weld in.

Sweet car!! How do you decide which ones to keep? I'm not sure I could get rid of any of them! Thank you for taking us along on this journey! I'm a recent sub and it's reigniting the love I had for these cars! Lord I wish I could have at least one back. Too young and stupid to hang on to them.
