Great vid, it doesn’t even seem too bad to replace it. I bought a tranny off of fb marketplace and drive the car to discover the main shaft bearing is worn, shim is in the mail and if it doesn’t fix it I will be tearing it down.

@@CrispysProjects Most welcome! I don't have that hole to inspect the bearing. Were you getting a whirling sound when the car was rolling or was the gearbox never on the car? I'm getting a whirling noise when doing anything over 30mph whilst in neutral. Also is there a part number/link for the bearing?

Hello, yes it's a similar 6 speed gearbox on those being a 02M family. You can check if there is the black seal on the end, some solid casing

6 speed manual seat Leon 2012 model, is it the same? I read somewhere that the gear box does not have the black cap there for not possible unless you split the box, is this correct

Hi, yes those parts are all still available, main VW agent or on the internet, I only have shim part numbers UK links in my description, the other parts can be different.

why did you split to the box to shim this? i didnt actually see you fit a shim on the inside of the box? you just remove the circlip inside the black cap, shim on then replace circlip. i only seen you have the end bearing back on, were / when did you add the shim or did you just put a new bearing in? ive only found this video after m mk1 cupra r box went, i just stuck an old box in which is an FML so doesnt have the black side cap, but im wanting to take the case apart on my old box to see why reverse went.

The bearing I did replace doesn't have setup/shimming pre load spec or repair op, on couple boxes does list a shims are available. too much movement on this shaft does make a difference on the input shaft as it seems to wander. the inner shimming - seems that some cases are machined different to take it, so likely not need one unless its fitted from the factory - mk1 Cupra brilliant car

Hi Silvia, I've not seen it on this box, but is shouldn't spin in the housing, could only happen if the bearing is binding or the load was that great when something happened to the case making it start to have play Either replacement case or there are some bearing bonding glues on the market (I've never used any)

my gearbox makes this whining sound all the time like a wheel bearing. Is it too late for this fix now ? with and without clutch engaged.

Might be the release bearing/thrust bearing on the clutch if you can hear it on idle- if its internal to the box you wouldn't hear it with clutch depressed for 30 sec or so as the gear box internals would of stopped turning

No it won't, they are different type of box internally, can give you all sorts of random issues with gear selection
