VW drag racing, Outlaw Turbo class, BUG-IN 35, 2010

VW drag racing from the Fontana BUG-IN #35. This is the M-Spec Motorsports Outlaw Turbo class, which is also run at the Irwindale Drag Day races. Racers in attendance included Roger Crawford from Heads-Up Performance, in his nitrous-powered Karmann Ghia, Hector Urias(R.I.P.) running his VW Beetle with the Type 1 transmission, Eric Calabrese in the Red Baron Pro Mod VW, etc.
There are also a couple of license passes in this video. Other VW drag racing clips from the event being posted later.

My first three cars were Bugs. When I was into them, I bought the biggest engine you could get at the time. 2180 stroker with dual Dellorto carbs. Sigh. The memories.

wowzers the first beetle that raced the dune buggy , yyer clutch is slipping so bad its a wonder you made it down the track , you be needing a lock up centrifical clutch with that turbo boosting , at the very least a multiple disc clutch with high out put springs

What distance are they running? It's not a quarter mile, right?

it's a 1/4 mile track, and there was a least one license pass that was run at the full 1/4 mile distance, but the m-spec outlaw turbo class was run at 1/8th mile distance... marty staggs started the class at irwindale, which is an 1/8th mile track, so that's the distance they were running at fontana.

i think that on average, it would probably be well into the 10's, at least, some of these cars have been a lot quicker than that.

what motors are they using?is it vw or porche or Subaru?

thx for checking the vid out... there isn't any porsche or subaru stuff, it's loosely based on vw aircooled motors, but since it's outlaw there aren't many rules, so some of the guys are running things like aftermarket race cases... in the beginning the rules were pretty simple, i'm not sure how much it's evolved since then: "The class was limited to draw-through turbos and normally aspirated engines with nitrous, but no intercoolers, EFI, or twin power adders like turbo with nitrous. The engine had to be in the rear of the car, but it could be a pan car or a chassis car. "
