Mike, have you ever considered writing a book on repairing and restoring the air-cooled VW's? You have such a great wealth of knowledge, it would be a great boon for all who want to get involved with these vehicles!

40hp 1385cc S/P with that Scat cam, 3-angle valve w/mild port work, HD simgle springs and LW flywheel. Swap the 28 with a 30-PICT carb. Super budget stock-ish build with a lil more pep. 👍

I feel like given how cool and original this car is a big bore 40hp would totally suit this Bug to the ground 😊

Sweet 61 Bug, Mike. If you're going to sell it just build what you can with the parts that you have on hand and press on with your many other projects. Keep up the great vids!

Mike, I hear what you're saying. The thing is, you have most of the parts already for the 40 hp 1385, and you're selling the car. If, on the other hand, you were to keep the car, then by all means, I would put an 1835 in it and enjoy it. Either way, it's your choice, love the channel Australia 🇦🇺 👍👍👍.

I know this sounds silly at this point but are you sure that the O.P. switch is not messing with you. That engine sounds pretty healthy.

There is a trick by Gene Berg to bring more fresh air into the compartment. It consists of fabbing a 1” by 12” scoop and install it over the right rear torsion bar; connect it to a VW heater hose, open a hole in the front engine tin on the flywheel end of the engine and connect the hose there. I used a Bug heater hose to heater box/muffler adapter and JB welded it to the tin and used a clamp to attach the heater hose there. Berg used to say that the area by the rear torsion bars is a low pressure area and cooler fresh air gets into the compartment as the car drives. I venture to say that your motor doesn’t have a problem as you might think. These motors will do that when you beat on them at freeway speeds, especially with a 4:37 transaxle and a non vented deck lid. Try keeping your speed to 60 mph or slower and see if it still does it. My car has a freeway flyer transaxle with a higher fourth and a well set motor with lower compression, good muffler, 30 mm CB Performance full flow oil pump, sealed engine compartment, all OEM engine tins, the Gene Berg trick I just told you and even a Porsche 356 generator pulley (smaller diameter that drives the fan faster) and if I do over 65 mph sustained on the freeway for an extended time the oil light will flicker (I have the Gene Berg oil temperature dipstick hooked up to the oil light) using monograde 40W Rotella in South Florida. Re engine; if you’re selling the car a 40 hp stock motor might get you a higher resale value. It can also have upgrades but look all stock in the compartment with all hoses, etc. stock muffler, etc.

Would like to see the oil temp pressure problems solved. like what the culprit is spring pressure to high or low poly size that oil cooler like what is the problem would be interesting and could help a lot of people,
@martinharris501720 сағат бұрын
The 1835 would be good motor but a predictable choice. The 1385 would be cool and an unusual option and it would be interesting to see how it runs with a mild cam and some headwork.
@frankkern5597Күн бұрын
Why don' t you first check the actual oil temp with a gauge, when it happens? So you know the facts.Maybe it is too hot.What cooling system are you running?Usually a higher compression results in higher temperatures.

If you do a build I'd love to see an 1385 build. Months back I started to build an 1385 not a lot of information out there on these conversions. The old 40 HP has copper or brass rings between the cylinders and the heads. Looks like 1385 does not. I'm lost in the build. Crank end play is different some what. I'm not in a good place on the engine. 30mm valves.no cam bearings in the block. Not many remember this old stuff.

I agree a 1385 video would be helpful

@@slingbuzz9148I have a 1600 I'm going to build on my 65 project and do the 12v conversion and use the little car for a daily driver. I pulled the 40 out of the car and was just going to fresh in it up.thats where the trouble's began. Just run the 40 until I have gotten the 1600 built. The put the 40 under the work bench. I've had this little car for almost 20 years. Most of that time its been in moth ball's here in Florida.

Hey Mike, what are the places to get stock camshafts reground? In addition to DPR and I think you`ve mentioned Brothers. Be nice to see a Webcam 86 or 119 or..... Can you put some contacts info up?
@jimmywilkinson9190Күн бұрын
Hey Mike ! why don't you overhaul that engine ? You like the way it runs . Some of the problems mite be what VW Darrin showed ? Under the cooler the donut gaskets are closing up and stopping the oil flow .then mic. everything and put a 30mm schadeck . I notice that the Castrol Classic loses oil pressure vs. the Valvoline VR 1 . Rambus oil dipped down to 40lbs. hot from 60 hot by switching . To check it only cost a gasket set and some glue ? Put a oil pressure gauge to check results . Oh yeah check lifter bores , they can bleed , thats what you are looking for a bleed out !!! P.S. thats a nice bug !!!
@johnhunt6992Күн бұрын
Pulled the cooler off a 1300 that someone else pulled down and put just new rings and bearings in. I didnt trust the build so i stripped it.The holes in the block and into the cooler were 80% blocked with sludge. I'm glad it had never been started. You never know until you look. I decreased, then pressure blasted that case. Then had it chemically cleaned.
@Rick-i4uКүн бұрын
The reality is that if you're planning to sell the car it doesn't really matter what motor is in it. A good chance whoever buys it will change it out, redo the suspension, freeway flyer etc. etc. etc. it's sad but that's probably what will happen to it.

You couldn’t do that in the ‘80’s with the thin wall 92s that were available then. Nowadays with the thick walls you can do that all day long. Your video is cool but the Bus pictured is a Split/Bay Window hybrid 😂
