If I think of a "car", I think of the Golf IV. This car for me is THE car. Never owned (was born 1999), owned Golf VI as first car, then Golf VII, then A3 e-tron.

Mk4 Golf owner here! Mine’s also a Reflex Silver 2002 but it has a couple of differences compared to the one in the video , that being the fact that it’s a 1.6L 16v AZD engine (105hp) and it has 4 doors instead of 2. It’s also a full option car , and I’ve also added a replica 25th anniversary front bumper lip and debadged my trunk , but that’s besides the point. I’ve got to say , even after all those years it is still a solid reliable car , especially if it is well maintained. The only thing I hate about it is fuel consumption , mine does 17 litres / 100km , which is absurd , but hey , the car is 1 year older than me and it’s also my very first car , so yeah , good stuff. Love the mk4 golf.
@weetrcek41334 ай бұрын
17L/100km? There will be something wrong with that car.
@Alexdbre4 ай бұрын
It’s crazy how far technology has come! The fact that my Seat Leon Cupra ST, with over 320 hp and AWD, manages just 6.3 L/100 km on long trips and averages around 7 L/100 km is impressive. When you compare that to older cars like my Golf V or your Golf IV with the 1.6L engine (102 hp), which still managed to burn through 15 L/100 km, the progress is clear. Modern advancements like turbocharging, direct fuel injection, and improved aerodynamics really make a huge difference in both performance and efficiency today.
@DownsizedDreamCars4 ай бұрын
@@weetrcek4133 yeah I’m currently planning on taking it to a mechanic , but with a full tank of fuel (50L) , I only managed to get 300km until the fuel light came on. I have no idea why it burns so much fuel since nothing has been done to the ECU , fuel pump or injectors.
@DownsizedDreamCars4 ай бұрын
@@Alexdbre oh , absolutely! Technology and engineering has come a long way since the early 2000’s! Just the thought of making over 300hp and managing under 10L/100kms arouses me! Also , congrats on the car! 320hp and AWD sounds like an AWESOME experience!

When I was a kid, my dream car was owning a Golf IV since my family could not afford a Golf class car back then. When I got my driver's licence, Golf IV was still being manufactured, but still no way I could afford it. I think it is still a great car since it has an iconic design, standing out from Golf V, but still looking modern. Back in the day, it had some really modern specs, being delivered with ABS, ESC, and full airbags set. Finally, it had an option of automatic AC, quite rare for that time in that class of car.

I have been driving a Golf 4 TDI for the last 17 years. What a magnificent car. It's not a rocket, but it's been a very reliable car and a good companion. In my opinion, it is still a very current car, with beautiful and current lines. I would love to have a mk4 gti as a future classic, but unfortunately in my country (Portugal) there are not many for sale and the few that are for sale are very poorly treated. I hope to continue driving my Tdi for a few more years, it still has a lot to offer.

The difference in feel between the older golfs and the mk4 is huge but between it and the mk7 its not a huge difference... shows how well the chassis holds up even 20 years apart. You're forgetting that the 95 Honda Integra Type R was available, 95-01, which was definitely a "hot hatch", it was a lift back, which looks like a trunk lid, but lifts the entire lid and glass....so no, this generation of GTI definitely wasn't "before all the other hot hatches", and don't forget the 89-91 CRX SiR and 1.6i-VT with the B16A1... those were definitely hot hatches with 160hp and VTEC screaming 😅

U go on about feel from the steering if u drive a new golf gti the mk4 has miles more feel and driver involvement compared to them and is actually built and engineered properly which is why they can do over half a million miles if looked after. And the 1.8 20v engines are the best vw audi engines ever made over the last 30 years and when it comes to tuning potential they can make over 1500hp. Sadly after the mk4 the gti went down hill and was made out of cheap plastic so this is the last of that 90s era when the cars were over engineered and we will never see that again
