Excellent review, as always, Thomas. You are a true enthusiast! The Mk7 is such a great car that I almost wish that the Mk8 wasn't coming so soon (Summer 2020 in the U.S.?). In the US, we don't get many special edition GTIs (just the Rabbit Edition this year). If the TCR came here, I would buy it. I would love to have a harder edged GTI to go with my standard 5- door.

FwD heaven, I only have the MK5 but have installed a few extras including an LSD , which is the best mod I've ever had! With the stage 2 remap, cild air intake m, 3 inch straight through exhaust, bilstein suspension, r32 brakes and bodykit and a decent set of road tyres in the Pirelli P Zeros its an amazing car for the money! Wish I had the cash for the TCR, 😗

Great video! I love your driving on the track. Is this GTI built in Germany? I own a 2017 GTI that was built in Mexico, and already had to replace the Turbo. Too bad the GTI TCR is not available in the United States.

As an American it's always interesting to see the perspective and brands/models covered on Autogefuhl. It's not clear, at least to me, whether the GTI TCR will even be available in the US, and if it is whether the US version will include the same features/options/etc. as those available in Europe. Typically, VW offers fewer features on US spec GTI's with options consolidated in a few trim levels that are offered individually in Europe. On the other hand, comparable GTI's in the US are MUCH less expensive in the US. VW feels, undoubtedly correctly, that American consumers aren't willing to pay over $50,000 USD (at current exchange rates) that Europeans pay for a GTI. Presumably the price point of a US spec TCR would be about where the MSRP of the "R" is currently set, i.e. $40-$42K. Whether American buyers would be willing to pay that for a somewhat lighter track oriented FWD GTI versus an even higher performance AWD "R" is questionable. Perhaps we'll see. It's also worth noting that a number of independent American tuning firms (e.g. APR) already offer ECU tuning and other upgrades for the GTI that the TCR appears to have. (e.g. circa 290HP). Whether those aftermarket products are truly comparable to the features of the TCR is, of course, an open question.

Why does VW blantently ignore such overlaps in their empire portfolio? I feel like VW are clueless about how to market their GTI tbh. I always considered the GTI as a classy hot hatch for people who were understated. We have the standard GTI then the more hardcore Clubsport, Clubsport S, performance and now the TCR. To me, the R fulfills the original GTI brief and I was always under the impression that the SEAT Leon Cupra was meant to be the more hardcore GTI cousin but it's quite understated and looks to have less development freedom. I'd go as far as compare it to picking a shirt style and size on a shop rail. Do i want a standard shirt in a standard 227bhp (standard)? Or a medium 242bhp (performance)? Or a large 261bhp (Clubsport)? Or an extra large 286bhp (TCR)? Or an extra extra large 306bhp (Clubsport s)?

If the overlap bothers you, come to the US. We have have four trim levels, period. (S, Rabbit, SE, Autobahn). The difference between the S and Rabbit trims is purely cosmetic. And between the SE and Autobahn, the only option is Adaptive Chassis Control in the SE that's standard on the Autobahn. Otherwise, except for upholstery, integrated navigaton, and audio options, there is no difference among the models. No difference in engines, no difference in tuning, each rated at 228HP. Same choice between manual and automatic transmissions. Even the multitude of exterior colors promised for 2019 is missing (at least currently.) Likewise for the promised "digital cockpit." And for the "R", there are no significant options, whatsoever. All this is the source of widespread complaints among American GTI/R buyers but it's obvious why VW has chosen to do it this way. The MSRP for a top trim Autobahn is $38,000 with discounts of $6000 or so readily available from dealers. A comparable version of the GTI in Europe is well over $50,000 at current exchange rates. VW believes Americans wouldn't pay that price and they're almost certainly correct. By limiting model choices VW contains the costs of production and reduces the risk of less popular versions sitting unpurchased on dealer lots. On the bright side for Americans, a variety of tuning firms (e.g. APR) offer ECU and DCT tuning and other performance options that significantly increase the performance of the GTI (as well as the R) at reasonable costs. And despite dire warnings that such modifications may void the VW warranty it's easy to find a "tuner friendly" VW dealer willing to perform the upgrades and honor the factory warranty.

This basically is the clubsport but for the 7.5, clubsport was for the mk7. Imo clubsport outshines this greatly. In Sweden the Clubsport cost as little as the regular GTI, the tcr will be 15% more this time.

In the USA, there's the Golf GTI Rabbit edition! :) It is actually a decently spec'd GTI minus the base head unit (and cloth seats for those who care). And the wheels look so much better, IMO.
