VW I.R.S Transmission C.V. Axle Replacement 1973 Volkswagen Thing Speedy! Mileage Unknown Ep 58!

On this Mileage Unknown we are wrenching on another one of our project cars. My brothers 1973 Volkswagen Thing Speedy! We run into a few issues replacing the C.V. axles on Speedy, hopefully so of the tips and tricks we talk about will help you guys!

Mileage Unknown oh I know that feeling! Helped a friend this morning put new front shocks on his bus.... 3 hours later for just the front and having to cut them off 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️

I tack welded a 6 point 1/4 Torx into the stripped bolts. Removed them and then cut the tacks with a grinder and reused the Torx again. Then replaced all the bolts with 6 point socket head Allen bolts.

It's crazy how worn they can end up! I've definitely done some cursing 🤬 but not had 2 weld on so lucked out there!

Yes been there many times yes must clean them out, vise grips works on some of them I had one I had to weld a bolt on it and one needed a little Dremel cut off wheel actiion , then vise grips remove the stud. But 90% of the time cleaning hammer in the 12 point would break them all free.. That high pressure CV moly grease good stuff..

Sometimes you must resort to , as my father called it, " old time shade tree mechanicing" and use a bigger hammer.
