Great review...Thank you! We have had our 2023 Kona Ultimate EV (first EV) for 10 days now and have put 1800km's on it. We love it! Back seat room sucks but there is just my wife and I and neither one of us is riding back there. This car puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. The VW ID was on our radar but impossible to get in Canada...plus I am not a fan of too much touch screen stuff so the Kona wins there by being more like a regular car. Seating, ride and handling are superb - really happy with it. Home charging is very economical, charging to 90% from 20% cost us about $4 (.08 cents a kwh between 7pm and 7am)...so running cost is about .01 cent per KM. Our Toyota RAV4 is about .16 cents per KM at current fuel costs here. Anyway...great video and Thank you for it! Mike 🇨🇦 🍁 👍

the design is ok, the touchscreen and the user interface in general is shit. also some hard plastic materials are very cheap. other than that it is a good car. i would always go for the bigger battery. of course because of the range but also because of faster charging, better longevity and the value of the car. at the second hand market this is also an important factor- in a few years i would like skoda to make an id3 gtx. that would probably the right one for me

I obviously missed this video when you made it, but perhaps it was meant to be because I've just ordered a face-lift Kona (would you believe that the date for delivery is December or January!!!), so I've watched this at exactly the right time. Your videos are sooo different to all others and I think they're brilliant. You certainly picked up on several things that I missed (like the hard plastic on the door armrest - oh well, disappointing but I still agree with you that it's a great car). I chose the Kona over other cars (iD3, Zoe) because it has adjustable lumbar support. I have back problems, so adjustable lumbar support is so important to me. I was really looking forward to the release of the iD3 because I thought that the eGolf was such a good car. I was sure that the iD3 would set the benchmark for all future EVs, so I was a bit disappointed that some features of the Golf were missing from the iD3. As I missed this video initially, I'm going to see if you've made one on the face-lift Kona exclusively. Keep up the great work.

These two models were also the ones to choose from in October 2020 when I was about to purchase my next car. The conclusion then was that it's the choice between better electric efficiency, bullet proof technology (Kona) vs. excellent driving characteristics (steering, lack of torque steering, suspension), so much more leg room, quieter cabin, bigger trunk, "EV only" platform, not an ICE conversion (ID.3). The choice was very easy and I ended up to ID.3 :-) I probably could have lived with all the other things in Kona, but the steering and suspension are light year behind when compared to ID.3.

However, with that being said I will be trying all 3 cars and see how I get along with them before making a decision.

An interesting summary thank you! Having seen quite a few reviews of both the Kona and the ID3 I am surprised that no mention is ever made of a specific practicality - neither car can tow, but both can have an 'accessory hitch' fitted to allow use of a towbar mounted bike carrier. In addition, whilst the ID3 cannot have any roof load, the Kona is fitted with roof bars and has 80kg permitted roof load. For me this is important as, for example it would allow me to occasionally carry my kayaks which would be impossible with the ID3.
@CaroAbebe3 жыл бұрын
Another practicality issue doesn’t get mentioned: the Kona doesn’t handle the snow well, snow and uphill is a disastrous combination. The ID.3, being an electric RWD, is a much better choice if you live in a mountainous region with lots of snow. So, Eddie Sugar, you’re quite right, for your use case the Kona is the better choice. For mine, it’s the ID.3. Since Chris can’t cover every single use case out there, we’ll still have to make further inquiries in order to find a car that meets our needs ;-)

@@CaroAbebe I drove through the mountainous highways in in British Columbia in ice, snow and slush in a Kona Electric. The Kona does quite well in ice and snow (with a good set of cooper winter tires) but it was a nightmare to drive in the slush, the car was basically driving slightly sideways the entire way up the hills and I had to do a lot of steering input to keep the car on the road, would have greatly appreciated dual motor/AWD in that circumstance.

@johannesmuller82143 жыл бұрын
@timemachine_194 your completely right. I judge the people for what they do or did. An therefore Mr Diess sits in the same boat like Mr Winterkorn. VW only paid for their crimes because they had been sentenced to do so. They wouldn't have paid a penny, also under the reign of Diess, as an initiative from themselves. It's really sad to see what is the outcome of this multi billion dollar project. The interior of the ID.3 reminds me about my 90s plastic Revell Modells of ww2 ships. The screens are a utter joke. The functionality and the handling of the software is awful, not to speak about the until today unsolved bugs. VW is not able to deliver every single car with the latest software, so you can expect that every car has his own special bugs, wich is also a nightmare for the mechanics. The worst part for me is the energy consumption, it's way to high. Especially when it comes to a long range trip on the autobahn with a 140 kmh average, but also in the city, you will need at least 30% more than with the kona f. e. and that car was originally designed for petrol and diesel engines. I really had expected more from the BEVs from VW, but if even the Chinese are not willing to buy that German quality product, there a obviously some serious problems with it, because diesel gate was never a theme there.

0 to 100 tests are very hard. You have to do it in both ways. Avg time of both. Perfect traction and so on. My test in this video is not accurate at all for time. But I could compare the 2 cars. Other KZbinrs tested the Id.3 way faster.

even if I'm biased towards the Hyundai due to the funky looks and better warranty the id.3 is better in every way possible (not to mention cheaper even if additional the optional extended warranty). Kona has the range but that's it.

Looking forward to your comparison of real world energy efficiency at 21:00. The energy efficiency of the Hyundai & Kia electric drive is impressive, especially in a steel body. It is disappointing that VW with vast resources and wider German electrical engineering history is not even more efficient.

SiC technology should have the potential to improve the drivetrain efficiency by 1 kWh per 100 km.
@abraxastulammo99403 жыл бұрын
@timemachine_194 Sorry, youtube ate my comment with link as proof. Infineon indeed gives a 7 % ballpark figure as improvement due to the inverter part of the drivetrain (if we include it).
@abraxastulammo99403 жыл бұрын
@timemachine_194 It is like Core2Duo needs less power than Pentium 4 to do the same kind of work: "power consumption in main inverter" is reduced from 1.6 kWh / 100 km to 0.6 (400 V) or 0.5 (800 V) in WLTP. I can't vouch for these numbers, just reciting the claims. 🤷

Had the Kona Electric found it a bit small now have the Kia E Nero much bigger, love it, ID 3 I felt was a bit small. Your mistaken about not being able to leave the climate on when leaving the car, you can and here’s how kzbin.info/www/bejne/nIbUZYSqi8SEhLc Putting in a pin code is good security! As for over the air updates, both Kona & Nero are now connected to the cellular network so updates over the air aren’t far away. Maybe try them when fully charged with the hvac off? Car & Driver 0-60 on the new Kona was 6.4mph with Racelogic timing kit. What timing kit are you using? Bjorn Nyland got 6.8 0-100kph in the old kona in winter with the crap tires with Draggy beating all of the id3 range under the same conditions. Kona should 0-100kph with a number that starts with a 6.xx

Measure how? With what timing kit. Racelogic and Draggy are a standard for measurement. I don't get how one would discern pressing the pedal and moving, it must be in .00th of a second, again how are you taking these measurements?
@funb0b3 жыл бұрын
@timemachine_194 All the 7.9s-100kph are probably all quoted directly from Hyundai's own literature which is well known to be woefully inaccurate as evidenced by this guys own findings lol. A bit like BMW, Audi and Merc who generally under promise and over deliver on performance figures. 7.6-100kph measured how? with what equipment and SOC? Lighter version, explain please? Pulled 177kw where on what dyno? All dynos read differently and EV's are notoriously difficult to dyno. Bjorn also tested the ID3's which presumably where all special "tuned" press cars and they where all slower than the Kona. You Can't have it both ways. I know of no aftermarket tuners for Kona's for power gains or any other mass produced EV if that were the case all Tesla's would be 1000hp, even the guy from the Tesla Racing Channel can't and he races for money, happy to be proved wrong. FYI. You can watch all of these for yourself on KZbin and before you get carried away with thinking they are special press cars there really is no such thing anymore especially at this end of the market in fact if a press car has got 15,000k's, add another 0 because it's been ragged to death by jerno's. Alex from YT channel Alex on Autos(Old Kona, crap tyres) claimed a 6.4-60mph TC on consistently and 6.2 TC off after some trail and error runs, he also said he felt it could be even quicker with better tyres. Although I confess I can't confirm method of measurement, I will assert he would be using a credible timing device. PDriveTV. Racelogic Vbox Sports (Old Kona, crap tyres) 6.86-100kph Car & Driver (World renowned media). Racelogic Vbox(New Kona) 6.4 0-60mph Bjorn Nyland. Draggy(Old Kona, crap tyres) 6.8 0-100kph Sorry guys I've nothing against the ID3 in fact I really like it and in the wet it would wipe the floor with the Kona without a doubt as the Kona handles like a boat but off the lights in the dry the Kona will leave an ID3. I'm waiting for the Cupra Born 236hp then it's game over Kona :)
