Great start to the rebuild CT. I will be watching the videos to come. Any body parts that need to be replaced should be ordered now so you won’t have to wait later all the while you can concentrate on the chassis. Love the video and how everything went!

Hey CT...This one is near and dear to my heart. I finished a 64 KG vert for my wife a few years back so this is bringing back some memories with every nut and bolt you remove. We all know disassembly is the easy part. I really hope you finish this one as they are awesome pretty rare cars that everyone really seems to enjoy. I know you have some VW experience and people like Darrin to help but please don't hesitate to reach out to me with any questions as I learned that Ghia parts can be tricky and I could possibly share what I learned. I found many people know a lot about bugs and buses but not as much about Ghia's. Best of luck on the restoration!

If all goes well there should be at least two videos a week on the progress. I might leave the body patina for now and focus on the chassis and everything else. I'm curious how you removed the trim around the windows? I will need to replace all the seals.

@@CTmoog So mine is a convertible so it doesn't have the trim around all the windows like the coupe. It only has the door window scrapers which are pretty easy and the front windshield trim molding which was not fun. I actually had to bring in help on that. Sorry I can't help ya on that one!

@@CTmoog FWIW, West Coast Metric has all the rubber and plastic items and many other parts as well. I believe there’s another outlet called House of Ghia that stocks parts for these. My first car was a ‘69 so I am pretty familiar with these too.

The Swamp Dragon is the only project I own that was completely stripped down. We are doing a complete restoration on The Swamp Dragon. I'm leaving the body on the Ghia patina and restoring the chassis, engine and transmission, wheels, etc....

@@CTmoog Even if you are not painting the body, try to treat everything down there with rust reformer/restorer, like Mike Fn does. Kind of cool that it has the ‘67-‘68 rear anti sway bar system for swingaxles. The Beetles had them too just before they switched to IRS in 1969. You just need the rubber bushings and clean and paint and recondition it and just put it back. This car is very complete and unmolested.

But soon realised he was not serious, except about showing off all his new equipment purchases. Then it became obvious he never Ever finished anything he started. Guess the revenue from these videos is enough to keep him buying? Cancelled my subscription way back then, what I have seen today does not persuade me to re subscribe.

Window washer was pressurized by connecting the spare tired to the tank through the valve. I had an old VW Beetle that did the same.

Yeah, the old beetles were the same and when you topped up your water you needed to remind yourself to pump up the tyre. I used to over inflate the spare. Mostly because I was lazy 😁

Sometimes I feel like being the only one on the planet wo sprays each and every bolt, nut and screw with penetrating oil a couple of days before disassembly begins. It makes things a lot easier and saves much fuss and hassle with corroded threads. Nevertheless: Thumbs up!

Currently putting my 74 Ghia back together; No need to do a "Body Off" - previous owner did all the "Body & Paint"; I'm simply installing a New Wiring Harness and then have to do an entire interior - carpet, panels, headliner, (seats are good) and dash (gauges/installation) - BUT - I watched your entire "Body Off" video and it was great to see all the components - also I loved that I wasn't watching a "30 Minute TV Show" where they have all the necessary tools to do such a job, e.g. overhead hoist/crane, forklift, crew of 7-10...you know what I mean. For guys like us - aka: "Shade Tree Mechanics" I enjoy seeing guys like you working in their garage, I will say you have a little more room than I have, but "GREAT VIDEO" - "NICE WORK", I'll try to follow you through your restoration. STAY SAFE STAY HEALTHY STAY SMART (informed).

Now we’re talking! You might be surprised at all the original things you might be able to recondition and reuse without having to buy new, and most times, inferior replacements. Looks like apart from the obvious mechanical parts like for the motor, brake lines and brakes you might need floor pans and all the rubber seals, gaskets and bushings. I believe you can reuse everything else in the car which is good news because you don’t need to spend that much on new parts.

Hi CT, Great Job! You made it look so easy! I say replace the pans and don’t use patches. The brake system is a dual circuit on a 1967! I believe they were upgraded.

The plastic reservoir with the small air hose is used to send window washer fluid to the front windshield, not to make the windshield wipers move. Volkswagen did the same thing with their VW beetles. They would connect air line from the reservoir to the spare tire and use the pressure to push the washer fluid up to the windshield. It would be interesting to see if the other end of that hose runs to the spare tire ?

Thanks man! Yes, it can be done solo. I did it a few years back in my garage with a hand chain hoist. I prefer the chain hoist. It's much easier as long as you have something to hang it from that won't get pulled down by the weight! =)

Hey CT. Hope you are well and thank you for this extremely informative video. Am embarking on taking the body off of my '1 vert. Am hoping that when I go there tomorrow that the rear torsion bar at the back that goes through the body applies to mine, as I have undone all of the bolts (and the ones behind the wheel too, but the back wasn't releasing. After watching this video again I see you dismantled a rear 'stabilising' contraption that is pinned to the body at both sides at the back. Fingers crossed. Thanks again.

You should replace the whole floor pan not patch because i know you spot weld you can watch duckman or vw darin they both have really good videos on floor replacement it a good thing the body is in good shape and you don't have to replace the heater channels.

Mmm, interesting, Mr. CT. I would vote for some overhead chainfall crane to pick it up, but you managed to get it off in the sketchyest manner.. =) Ok, the truth is we all do some dangerous stuff sometimes... Anyway, yes, you might have to replace the floor pans although the body looks quite nice.. I think you'll have to fix the lower edges and borders and these are a call for welding craft, so no excuses anymore. Time to make some sparky rain... =) Keep on, rusty is also waiting for some crafting..

The washer bottle was often hooked up to the spare tire. you just had to remember to check the spare tire pressure every couple of months. My 72 type 3 Van has one like that .

Nice job ct, did the exact same thing with my bug, everything is so much easier this way. Brake lines from fill bottle to master cylinder are only low pressure so do just slide on, don't panic. Great vid

order some 5mm fuel hose from autohauz Arizona...plus some Barrel nuts (extra ones) and axle seal kits, (you will need them all the time and cheap from there, Some transmission seals, (cheap from there) Get a few of them maybe some Brake light switches and some oil pressure switches. a few of each

Hard to believe you are starting another project... Be careful CT sometimes you go too far you can mamake a good driver without replacing sandblasting and painting everything. I recently purchased a car that sat for 45 years in a warehouse I am driving it now after just a few months.

Good job. Looks like a good car to start with too. I have a 69 1/2 that I recently restored, rebuilding the engine now to 1680. Should be a noticeable power upgrade.

The spare tire is hooked to the washer tank with a hose. The air pressure in the spare is used for the window washer

Take that F’er apart! Push it outside with a harbor freight blue tarp over it and let it sit. In a couple weeks that Florida sun will dry out that tarp. Then the wind will have it frayed in no time. Then go buy something else and take it apart. That’s how you do it.

The only good thing about the windshield wipers being operated by spare tire air pressure is, you had to check your spare & washers fluid at every fill up, or be screwed if you failed to refill it. Then the gas stations moved the air pump from the fuel pump islands and started charging for air.

The yellow wire coming out of the steering column, is the horn. The other wire, which connects to the body, is the ground. They probably make hinge pin kits for your doors. Name for the car? How about "Karma Ghia"? Here's a hint that worked well for me, "back in the day"...Take all four wheels off, and store them out of the way. Then, lower the brake drums/disks down onto wheel dollies, which I believe you already have. Makes the chassis much lower and easy to move out from under the body. To move the body, get four of the furniture dollies (like from HF) and either lower it onto them, or build appropriate adapters to fixture it in place. Yes, back then, I set the body on saw horses. Never even thought about how sketchy it was, but I got away with it!

If not "Sketchy" then its not meant for you tube. nice work, 2 ton jack stands for 200 lbs body. Over kill but perfect for comments. Love your style, get it done ;. is the goal who needs Lift, when you got got 2x4's 2in steal square metal. for cross braces.. makes it happen. on Serous Note makes repair work "way easier" correct I do that to every vehicle if I could.

if I'm not mistaken the window cleaner takes the pressure from the spare wheel like on my vw beetle but looking good take pressure in some other way but you can put an electric pump and you will see that it works better ... at least I am fine with this solution 👍I don't know if the Beetle's collapsible steering column will fit on the Karmann Ghia but it would be safer

This car was build in Osnabrück Germany. Karmann build cars from 1901 till 2010.

@@CTmoog If you do, don’t do the mistake of getting one of those red urethane ones. Use a stock, fabric and metal reinforced one. The urethane ones break without warning and don’t have additional reinforcement.
