The final part of the two part series on how to make the 1.6ltr Turbo Diesel engine produce more power.
Once tweeked these can produce in the region of 120bhp and 140 lbft which is nothing to be sniffed at when itll also return north of 50mpg
As mentioned in the video parts available all over and cheap too.
Turbo pressure set to 1.3bar with stock being 0.8bar

Watched these vids after throwing in td setup onto my 1.6 na engine. I bought a manual boost controller but couldn't be bothered to install it so i just pinched the line instead. No boost gauge either. I did all the other mods except rotate the diaphragm pin. Also installed an aaz mk3 downpipe and a full 3" exhaust. Its also a 3spd "tl" code diesel specific mk2 automatic. Goes pretty good for what it is. Intercooler and then rotate the diaphragm and hopefully leave it there

take care. your NA Block lacks the TD Pistoncrowncooling. Pistons can melt down - avoid excess black exhaust smoke.

The cylinder head is very delicate, that amount of boost should damaged it, especially between valves, almost all cylinder heads has cracks there with stock setup. Solution is to install custom downpipe to reduce excesive heat from the cylinder head or install a rebranded modern model that are supossed to improve in those delicated areas.

Yes that is a potential issue but as is with all engines theres a limit, this boost level with the correct fueling is more than safe, its when the fueling isn't set right that will lead to potential issues. The later mk2 'toilet bowl' downpipes are a straight fit that give a bit more flow

Novus Exhaust with GU (or GTI) downpipe was a great upgrade on mine. Turbo comes in like 500-700 rpm earlier

@@Albertosalat the original downpipe for the 1.8 litre 90hp Engine (engine code GU). If you have the chance to get your hands on a downpipe for the GTI engine, I‘d prefer that over the GU.

i would not recommend using full Pressure more than a few seconds. the head will crack and start leaking pressure between the valves when overheating. TD´s are known to this when pushed to hard. use intercooler, oilcooler, exhausttemperature- and oiltemperaturegauges so you can see what you do when punish the engine constantly beond the factory settings.

This is the same with a variety of engines. Pushing the limits for too long may cause issues. This isn't a huge jump in boost pressure. I've seen 2bar on these turbos, but that's only going to end one way Nice bit of boost and some additional fuel and getting the fuel injected at the right point are fundamental. As you say logging EGTs on pulls would be the next step to make sure things aren't getting too hot. Its also down to the overall condition and wear of the particular engine as to what they will comfortably take

@@GreyGooseRestorations Factory boost is 0,5 to 0,6 - yes far on the low end but these days (1986 ff) focus was on high milage and reliability... i tend to say 2 Bar on a JX´turbos boostgauge is questionable - as i know the factory turbo spec is at 1,2 bar max. 1,6td small headcacks are a known issue even under factory conditions. For shure - the lifespan of a hard modded engine depends on the drivers style and so on. I tuned mine to 0,8 Bar with more Basic injection quantity, retarded Boost pressure enrichment 97bevore OT in 185 bar 2step-Injectors and a factory pre-1989 exhaustsystem (more responsive turbo due to less noise cancelling). With Intercoller/Oilcooler modded the temperatures are fine even when running my 2ton campervan up the hill under highway conditions. Milege is at 26-27 mpg and yes, head has small cracklings in it.

The injection pump on mine is different, it has a flat plate with the throttle mechanism on top!! What should I do!? Edit: I just found out mine has the new Bosch pump "Long Nose" or whatever it's called and is there a way to tune it?

Theres always a way to tweek injection pumps, ill have to look into it

Nice videos of 1.6td power adjustments. Do you consider doing the governor mod on the pump? That will free a lot of hidden hp on the higher rpm range (these engines are known to rev pretty high for a diesel, and safely)

I have done everything you did inthe first video, bought the same boost controller as you did, yet the boost won't go above 0.5/0.6bar. Any idea on what's wrong? Thanks

Yes I did, aj checked it multiple times. The problem can't be there. I'm thinking if the wastegate mechanism isn't stuck open or something.

As long as the engine is healthy and not leaking oil out of every orifice then i see no reason why not VW engines are well known for being strong even after that kind of mileage.

Very nice video. I have the same Golf in 80hp. To improve this performance, I have heard that it is possible to fit Renault injectors with a higher calibration. Do you have any information on this? @@GreyGooseRestorations Ok thank you for the answer. In fact, it's because I have 4 new Renault 1.9 TDI injectors. My golf has a powerful engine, I think it makes over 80hp but the engine is noisy, very noisy, without clicking. Is this engine known to be noisy ? Occasionally, I will make a video. Hi, you would have to fit an aftermarket blow off valve into the pressure side of the turbo intake side

Most likely due to the oil grade or the age of the oil if its not been changed in a while, takes longer to warm up and build up pressure etc

Yes the same principal applies but i would ease off on the on boost fueling a touch as with no intercooler the incoming air won't be as dense

@@GreyGooseRestorations it plays me a little sometimes it pulls hard and sometimes its clunky and it fells like not spooling. Tried the fuel screw, started leaking when i tried to snug it up and i broke it so fuel its not the problem i think its something with the turbo as the cold side is covered in Oil

@@GreyGooseRestorations perfect, because I've done my 'research' on this, and some people recommended the k14. I have an 1.6td JR engine code, and after I will change the timing belt and water pump, I will try to do this mod. Hopefully I will get a plus of power 😁 thanks for your videos!!

I dont installed yet a boost controller and a boost gauge. Anyway the car seems to work fine, i see some somke behind me but it's fine
