Actual Carburetor Tuning Talk starts about 4:20
A little morning chat then off for a short Putt in the 2 liter VW street Baja.
Last week we improved the performance in the fresh 2110 conversion engine. Here are some behind the scenes work I did.
One of the changes I made to improve things was swap out the Dual 36 Dellorto DRLA carbs for larger Dual 40 Carbs. The idea was to see if the engine liked the larger venturi's (34mm vs 30mm) even though it has a mild Camshaft. I had used these carbs before but they have been in storage with no fuel in them for over a year. I wanted to check them out before I put them on the engine and make sure everything was working and set up right. I turned the camera on and chatted away as I worked on the first one. The Weber IDF carburetors are very similar in operation and I make references back and forth about the Weber IDF carb. Inspecting throttle linkage operation is critical to make any dual carb system work well.
This vid is not intended to be a complete rebuild or to in depth. I'm just making casual conversation as I check it out before final installation.

Thank you for producing another informative video. I'm constantly referring people to your channel for carb advice. We can't preach enough proper carburetor set up bench clean and best lean idle set up. After 30 years I finally feel like I have a good handle on carburetor set up. Although I'm still amazed with all the information at hand with the internet that people still think they can grab a carb out of the box from the VW shop and bolt it on and expect it to run on their engine with no effort. People like to say you can put a Porsche engine in that bug! I look at them and laugh and say your right, and reply, did you also now you can bolt a set of Ferrari carburetors "48 IDA" on them and make it really fast! Keep up the videos you reaffirm that i'm on the right path when I have doubts.

Hey Greg, thanks for another great video. It will be interesting to see how the Dell 40s go in place of the 36s. I wonder if the hill climb will suffer. Do you have heat in the Baja?? I certainly would if I lived there. I have heat in the Bug and we have a very mild climate here in Perth. Cheers Mick

I posted the results of the second Heartbreak hill attack with the 40's It did help noticeably. The Baja has a (78X90.5 ) 2 liter with mild cam stock heads and heater boxes. It is my favorite engine build. I had the 2110 with 82mm crank and tried to duplicate what I did on the 2 liter. With a little more tuning and some warm weather I think I might have it.

@@TheEZGZ Ah sorry Greg. I had seen that one just didn't realise the second run was with the Dell 40s fitted. Certainly seems to pull better. I was thinking the 40s might be worse than the 36s at 2k rpm with less air velocity through the throats. Seems I was wrong. I usually am. :-)

Hey EZ, thanks for all the fantastic information you supply us with. Can you tell me what would be a good setup/starting point for jetting dual Dellorto drla 36's on a 1915 VW dune buggy? Engine stumbles at acceleration then smooths out pretty well.
@TheEZGZ
@TheEZGZ 7 ай бұрын
The stock jetting works great on those carbs. I have them on my 2276 right now. The stumble could be not enough stroke on the accelerator pump squirt, or not being perfectly synchronized linkage.

thanks so much for all your great videos,i watch them all, over & over 😍 way better than tv 👍 i have a set of DRLA 40s on my 2017cc beetle, can i ask you what the ideal setting is on the accellerator pump rod ? how far in should the nut be turned ? or how many mm of thread should be exposed in front of the adjuster nut ? for best squirt ? thanks in advance man 😍
@TheEZGZ
@TheEZGZ 2 жыл бұрын
Great question! There are many variables but the crux of it is that the DRLA 40's originally came with #35 pump jets. Make sure you have a smooth steady stream coming out of all 4 squirtter's Turning the nut out (away from the carb) reduces the flow ( leaner) Turning the nut in clockwise makes more fuel go in. I use a 1/4 nut driver and go one full turn at a time. I try to adjust both carbs at the same time since I have a 4 into 1 exhaust. With the engine at steady idle Blip the throttle. If black smoke (fuel) comes out the exhaust your to rich back out the screw one turn and test it again. If you engine stumbles or pops back threw the carb it usually means a lean condition. Most important is to have both carbs in synch using a air flow meter. I just looked at one of my carbs and I have about 6 threads showing behind the nut. I'll also tell you this, if you go to fat you will notice a reduction in MPG. The threads on the control rod act like a file on the accelerator pump lever and the holes get out of shape so check yours and hope they are good. The diaphragms get old and hard from modern ethanol fuel too. The diaphragm chamber is the trash can on all Dellorto carbs because it takes fuel from the bottom of the float bowl. You find dirt and rust and peaces of the diaphragm laying in there. No big deal. just wipe it out and spray some brake clean threw all the nooks and cranny's. Watch it at the squitter . The book describes a method adjust the control rod. They call out having 6 cc from every 2 squirts from the bottom of each bore...... (Good Luck with that) my way has worked well enough for years

Great video!! I’ve got a 2332 vw with a CB performance turbo with dual DRLA 48s on and I seem to be having problems every time I hit a pretty good bump on the sand dunes it starts snapping and popping not at wide open throttle though. I’ve adjusted the floats and cleaned the carbs numerous times the thing that gets me is it runs perfect on the highway. Do you have any suggestions?
@TheEZGZ
@TheEZGZ 3 жыл бұрын
Are you running a Turbo fuel pressure regulator? www.cbperformance.com/product-p/7246.htm Many people think that a 2332 turbo has to have those big honking 48's which run great at WOT but the problem we had was most of your dune cruising is not wide open throttle. Your driving in the middle. Not on the idle circuit and not fully into the mains. The 48 Dells had a travel stop on the float to keep it from bouncing to much. Lot's of Turbo guys cut that off so as not to go lean. If you drive like my friends and do on the sand your only on WOT for short bursts. You might want to go down to 34mm venturi's and a little smaller mains. Non turbo would be around 140 main. I'm not sure on Turbo. We only ran around 8 or 9 PSI boost. Anyway, smaller venturi's limit your RPM but give you more drivability. I wouldn't want you to take only my advice and hurt your engine. I would rater give up top HP for more torque and drivability down low. The Turbo mania book gives some good advice and suggestions. Thats about all I got to say except keep the rubber side down my friend and may the sand never get in your eyes. hehehe fat chance for that ......!
@ericsander9392
@ericsander9392 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply man! It has 160 main jets and 75 idle jets with a 40 venturis . What gets me it’s it will pull from 2500 rpm to 8000 rpm really well on smooth ground but those bumps make it sound like it’s running on one carb and I’m running 10 psi of boost It kinda acts like it is float related to me.
@ericsander9392
@ericsander9392 3 жыл бұрын
And I’m also running that fuel pressure regulator I have not checked the fuel pressure though.
@TheEZGZ
@TheEZGZ 3 жыл бұрын
It sounds like your on the right track. I would install a good fuel pressure gauge and like it said in the add 5 psi above boost and it needs to be under 3 PSI when not on boost or those inlet valves won't hold.

That's a lot of money to pay for those IDF carbs and I can't believe they don't come with velocity stacks....! I'm still running my old Dellorto's that I bought back in the day. One of the problems I have is that the new webers no longer come as a Right and Left carb like they used to. They modify the throttle linkage to make it work but the return spring will be on the wrong side and they are harder to synchronize for full travel. Keep asking around to find someone who is actually running them and ask them how they like them. CB has a no return policy on racing parts. Be sure and ask about that before you buy. I got screwed when I built my 2110 engine.
