I experienced it when I wrote my master thesis at VW and should move a Phaeton that was due for scrap. It was freezing and the car seemed completely dead. Only the alarm went off when I unlocked the door manually with the key, no interior lights no nothing. I thought "this is it, this car isn't going anywhere". Because of the alarm going off, somebody opened the window and yelled at me "Schlüssel stecken!". And so I did, I heard a click, and suddenly the car came to life and the engine started like magic. Needless to say, I was VERY impressed!

Very interesting! My A8 only has 1 battery but thats because its the V8 model, if it were the W12 version I imagine it would have the same system as in the Phaeton. I'm glad you're making some content on the Phaeton. I had seen the car in the background of some of your older videos and wondered if you were ever going to make a video on it.

Batteries in parallel do not have to be the same size, just the same chemistry. It's batteries in series that are best to be the same size.

Samcrac recently uploaded a video dealing with his convertible Bentley… it’s a good representation of this battery system

Today 12V energy management systems are way more sophisticated than some might think. It all started with the Phaeton more or less (and similar cars from the era)

They ran out of ideas for making it more complicated, so they had get really inventive :)

Hey Martin, Is there some kind of publicly available technical book or dealer literature that covers the Phaeton's systems? I'd really love to read it. I ask because there's a 200 page "Technical Information Manual" on the Dodge Stealth / Mitsubishi 3000GT that goes in depth on all its infamous systems, and I feel like there should be an equivalent for the Phaeton. I don't mean a user or owner's manual either that tells you how to use the systems, I mean one that tells you how they work with numbers, graphs, diagrams etc like the aforementioned TIM for the 3/S twins.

If your phaeton start battery is dead, turn the key to the left, and it will connect the comfort battery and you can start again

Dual batteries are common on most new cars today, with stop/start. Battery "registration" too.

i notice you have collection of older cars in general , is there a reason for it ? older cars do look great though , no over design , simple shape and somehow looks less bulky than modern cars.

A diesel car with two batteries. Each of different chemistries. And a BMS. Remember; neither battery actually powers the car. How very German.
