4:54 says "4 Phillips screws hold the housing against the body"... it's actually supposed to be 6. One was missing and one was broken / rusted off. Those missing ones were between #1 & #4 and #2 & #3. I'm sure you will find them when it comes time to do your own Heater Box Removal. :-)

We could probably have twice as many Techs working here... the room is there, we would just have to organize the shop better. The up & down swing of how busy we are, is what makes hiring 3 more guys an issue.

Is there enough room in the blower box to fit an Air conditioning "radiator" (not sure what it is called) to get AC in the FRONT of the bus ? my 85 as the coil way in the back...

No, no room in the box.

Nice demonstration on what it takes to remove dash on this model. I have been thinking other then evaporator , heater core , or vent door/blend door issues. Is there any other time when one would ever need to completely remove the dash in repairing a vehicle. I get removing instrument panels ,radio , hvac controls , ...etc components on the dashboard are pretty common. But removing the whole dash seems only necessary if your fixing a hvac unit under dash i don't see many other times when it would occur other then this situation.

So scared of doing this, but the heating isn't working well, the fan makes terrible noise, interior lighting isn't wired up and the seat heating is also gone. Someone at some point switched the steering column from right to left and I have no idea what I'll find. Should it be possible to check everything with original wiring diagrams? Also, the stereo is gone and I would like to fit in a new one. It's my first time doing something like this. I hope I can somehow figure out how to solve all those problems.
@EXOVCDS2 жыл бұрын
Factory wiring diagrams ca be helpful... but you will probably still have to figure a lot out yourself.

Remove the spare tire and disconnect the two heater hoses that go into the vehicle... you can flush through those hoses.

How did you remove the safety bolts (rounded on steering column)?? The hardest part missed :(

Knock them free with a chisel or use bolt extractor sockets to bite the outside edge. It might be shown in one of my other dash removal videos.

There it is haha. That one seems a bit less complicated than some though. I have to do mine in an A3 jetta, dreading it.
@EXOVCDS11 жыл бұрын
It is an easy job that only gets complicated when extra switches & wiring are added. The A3 isn't that bad either, I'm sure you'll have no problems doing it!
@simontomkinson5337 жыл бұрын
is there a reason why you did not disconnect the control cables directly from the heater blower unit?

***** blower fan power wire @ 8:55. Or is it an illusion and the wire actually extends somewhere?
@EXOVCDS10 жыл бұрын
***** Yes, sorry... red/blk wire. Needs to be removed from the switch plug, since the wire can not come out with the heater box assembly (if you leave it attached to the switch). Make sure to mark the slot location, so that you put the wire back in the correct place.

***** Thanks man. Van is outside in MN Winter, so have to wait till Spring to do this. Is it really a half hour job? Wonder what the dealer's book say's? Four hours?
@EXOVCDS10 жыл бұрын
***** The video was edited... dash can be removed within 1 hour, but then you need to deal with whatever it is that needs fixing (heater box / core, cables etc.), so yes, can turn into a 3+hr adventure.

As you can see the "T3 instrument panel" is not designed, it is - Darwinistic- evolated in VW design shop, in time by several teams, not working together. I can't distinguish separate functional units which can be changed quickly by loosing some steel clips and connectors. I see no design strategy for quick placement of the dashboard. I don't see a well supported wire loom with branches. It is an entangled mess.. meine Herren! Bitte! VW- engineering did not learn a lot in time; the T5 has still electrical problems caused by copper-fatigue in the wire-bundels to the doors, this causes the most erratic problems. For instance: you close the door (key is in, engine off) to walk around and unload baby in the rear: car lockes all doors instantly. Car locked, key inside, baby inside... See Wiki over this topic. Good engineers can be found, but "offenbar" you stumble over managers without ears at VW.
