The shortcut you mentioned is not possible if you want the cigarette lighter to work as you still can't get access to the electrical connection without removing the whole thing

Fair comment and good spot. I guess if you want a quick replacement then this is the one. Then strip the dash at a later date to connect the 12v supply :-)

I just cut the wires and crimped them back together 2 minute job and if you pull the right side out first it comes out easier
