Great video Dan! With jobs like this, it's good to find the 'smoking gun', ie the failure point. I would be scrutinising the head gasket between the pots and the water ways, before you clean anything up. Even the tiniest breach will cause major issues. White/ corroded deposits on the head face where the gasket fire ring sits are a dead giveaway. Always good to find the reason for the problems imo! Good luck!

As someone else has commented, 2nd cylinder along on the mating face of the block, has a dark mark from cylinder to water jacket, compare it to cylinder 3, cylinder 3 has a silver ring round the bore as it's sealing, check the underside of the head gasket you removed at cylinder 2, your probably find its failed, you did show a dark mark that corresponds to the position of the leak Looks to me like the gasket has failed on cylinder 2 between block and gasket rather then head to gasket, getting the head skimmed is a pointless exercise, you need to inspect the mating surface of the block first

Hey Dan, currently using your cylinder head removal process as guidance, as I have to remove mine on my 1.9L BRR engine to un-clog carbon (down to my own stupidity at pissing about trying to remove EGR valve, then intake manifold to clean, & knocking stuff down in ports & clogging centre valves). Haynes manual also proving to be seriously helpful...as well as pretty damn vague sometimes. Dan, did you have trouble trying to undo the turbo oil feed pipe union nut? Mine is pretty seized, & seems to be wanting to turn the fitting it screws on to (which itself is screwed into the top of turbo). Heat gun & WD on it not working yet (though has def helped on a few rusted n seized nuts elsewhere). Same for the other end Dan, did you struggle to undo feed pipe union nut at the block under oil filter casing? Need to get beyond it to crack on. I'm sure you've hit a multitude of snags yourself in your time! Very much appreciated Dan, your whole Restoration series has really helped in my own panel van to kombi conversion.

You get good engines+bad ones,, I'll give you an example,, right I had 2 Mitsubishi shogun engine's both identical except one had done 190000 miles,, No problems whatsoever,, the other one only 87000 miles,, nothing but trouble,, oil leaks, water leaks, overheating... I even tried what you did, new radiator, waterpump, hoses, etc etc,, but it was just a waste of time+money... And I've had other engines do exactly the same,, Mercedes 270 ml diesel.. Nissan Navara engines,, Personally I think you've got a bad engine,, and once you go to that length to put right an issue it's time to reassess,, Just my opinion/experience..
