Episode 11 of transforming a tired looking ex builders T5 into something a little cooler.
In this episode I change the Cambelt, WaterPump & MAF Sensor. Will the MAF sensor cure by boost issue?

Awesome vid, thanks for the huge detail. Just did my T5 1.9 BRR... I found that you don't need to remove the airbox or the chassis side large engine mount- only the engine side bit (unless you're doing like Dan, and filming it). Also, you can lock the aux belt tensioner open with a 5mm pin/ drill bit before you remove it- makes life a bit easier when removing/ reinstalling.

loving watching the videos friendly advice not criticism :) 3 13mm bolts on cam pulley should be loose when tightening belt. and then re torqued when belt tension is set Id recommend removing the 3 16mm bolts at the bottom of the engine mount to chassis leg as the rubber section has a nasty habit if failing (especially on older vehicles) when removing the 18mm engine mount bolt.

fair play lad . most garages charge on average £65 an hour. 3 to 3.5 hrs for a T-belt and parts with vat = £450-£550 approx. you have done the job for less than £200. Its a big job but worth the effort. good stuff. i think the thermostat will solve your issues with cooling. good work . see you on the next one.

Hey dan I had a major issue like this with my t5. There is a coolant bypass before the engine gets warm that cuts out the radiator. It’s difficult to bleed the system correctly. See if your radiator or bottoms hose is cool. In the end I removed the thermostat and it ran perfectly. After that I drilled a small hole in the thermostat and it’s running good and I have the heater back. Blew 2 heat gaskets finding this out!

Rage Stunts This is why I go to a decent independent VW/Audi specialist for things I don’t feel comfortable doing like cam belt/water pump. Not in anyway defending the dealer you took your vehicles to but they would’ve used a genuine MAF, not an aftermarket one like Dan, which is around £120+VAT; then labour rates are typically £110 - £130/hr+VAT or even higher if the dealer is in a big city. I’ve never been charged a part hour at a main dealer, always a min full hour labour, then there’s the “free” tea/coffee/biscuits; “posh” waiting area; “free” WiFi; “free” multipoint safety check and “free” mini valet. Had a bill once that was £1.20 more than I’d been quoted. It was listed on my invoice as Sundries. When I queried it I was told it covered “bits and pieces like any screws; washers; dab of sealant; use of penetrating spray; shop towels etc used”. It was taken off as “A goodwill gesture” by the service manager.
@DanChambersDAC
@DanChambersDAC 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching and for the comment. Yeah I would never go to a main dealer. My Mrs has a Q3, Went in for an oil service and came out with a list of 'Urgently required repairs' totalling around £1500. One of them being an undertray that was missing. Needless to say I fixed the minor issues for around £300 and not even a full day's work!

You should lose the top 3 bolts on cam so when you put your belt on and do tension on belt it allows to tension belt correct , otherwise one off side will have more tension then other, thats why once you turned engine by hand your top position was out and you had to undo that bolts...

Thank you so much for watching and for the comment! The cambelt is defo a scary thing to change, I know I was a little cautious and I am a pretty confident DIY mechanic. I find watching videos on a subject like this just makes thing a lot easier to understand. I searched before I did it and struggled to find a video on the subject. I got all of my torque settings from my Haynes manual. They are great to just double check things! Glad you liked the classical. Not had any moaning about music yet! I imagine the next one will get some moaning though 😂

Nice work, great video! Talking about those intercooler pipes you took off, I've got to change one of mine, would you go genuine Vw or a certain aftermarket manufacturer? Haven't got the budget to go Darkside or Forge.

Cheers bud, I just got these off eBay to be fair. They are decent quality and fit well. Darkside & Forge are bloody expensive. I would only use them if i was running big boost. Thank You for watching and for the comment!

Excellent job man! Watched all your videos! I have a T5 that's undergoing some work right now Are the door handles tricky to remove and replace? Mine a bit rotten!
@DanChambersDAC
@DanChambersDAC 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for watching and for the comment. The handles are easy to remove. The drivers and passenger, on the edge of the door is a black rubber grommet. remove that and there is an (I think T20 Torx) screw. Remove this and the small 'Lock' part of the handle will pull out. Then pull the handle towards the back of the door and unclip the lock cable. Sliding door is much the same although the Torx screw is located behind the ply panel. Hope this helps.

I don't think you have a coolant blockage it sounds like an air lock, if you jack the van up and leave the cap off the expansion vessel and let it run till its up to temp it should clear.
@DanChambersDAC
@DanChambersDAC 4 жыл бұрын
Thank You for watching and for the comment! This is my thinking now. The bubbling makes me think this. I have the Thermostat to change, Coolant flush and I am replacing the expansion tank cap too.
@jimmcglynn1
@jimmcglynn1 4 жыл бұрын
@@DanChambersDAC if you put the van up on stands like you did for the cam belt, make sure the heater is at max then fill it and run it to temp with the expansion tank cap off. That should let any air clear at the highest point.

You should slaken the cam pulley bolts before locking you belt tensioner, and allways do atleast 4 rotations of the engine by hand before starting the engine you have 4 cylinders not 2
