So i had seen a few examples of this on various forums but no guide as such. So i thought i'd have a go myself based on a few pictures and post up a video so that it might help other people.
Overall i am fairly pleased with the outcome. I think if i were to try again and do it differently i'd probably use two hinges; one a bit further down to where i have the existing hinge and the other i'd place at the top.
anyway - i hope this video helps someone. Let me know if i should have done anything differently or if you manage to do a better job than i did! Really keen to see more examples!
Please note that this was done on a VW T5.1 and would work exactly the same on a T5 and nearly identically to a T6 & T6.1. Also, the van is a tailgate and this wouldn't work for people with barn-door vans.

Nice idea and certainly better than drilling the side panel which I was about to do. I am a little concerned about the hinge rusting. Perhaps a very generous coating of grease may help. Still, a very neat idea.

Cool original idea but i have some reservations. It doesn't look very strong and i hope the fittings are stainless steel. Did you use a magnet to latch it shut?

Great tutorial on this! Going to be fitting one of these in the near future. Any tips on mounting the hook up connector ? Did you have to do any drilling to bring it through, Or did the cable just take the same route as the lights cable ? Many thanks again
@baddevotions
@baddevotions 3 жыл бұрын
thanks! hope it helped. It's good to know that people still find it useful. I should have done more of my van conversion! lol Anyway, if i remember correctly, then yes, the cable just routes through existing holes. no drilling required.

Great video! I wish I had seen this before I paid a monkey to do something similar and made a balls of it… A) fitting it on the wrong side and B) just doing a very very poor job! So having to rectify this myself and Carey out the job on the correct side. What thickness of Perspex did you use? Thanks Niall

Lovely neat job. But, there is always that possibility of a shunt from the rear damaging it. I was thinking of my Renault Master rear door, but above the window. I really need to get the spare wheel on my offside back door below. As it takes up so much luggage space. I successfully put an air vent in. Had the hook up under the bonnet but now going to try locating it on the side of the van.

sorry for the late reply! tbf, if i had a shunt from the back i'd be more worried about other areas of the van than the rear door :)

I used a Stanley knife instead of the Dremil as the plastic is quite soft and then used Velcro which is not as good as a hinge but works OK

Quite interesting as thats where i would site plug. Are you putting a magnet catch to secure door shut or a wee clamp clip on house kitchen unit doors.
@baddevotions
@baddevotions 2 жыл бұрын
Hey! No magnetic catch or anything. Stays shut with no problem.
@JamUltra
@JamUltra 2 жыл бұрын
You did a decent job, overall. Thumbs up from me. I think I would have found a better hinge, perhaps one that opened wider, and also one that was not as mechanically stiff as that one which, I think, is designed for a heavier application. Perhaps treating the screw holes to avoid corrosion too? And being VERY persnickety here, but the clear perspex doesn't hide all of the ugly adhesive very well when open, but some vinyl could put that right.
@baddevotions
@baddevotions 2 жыл бұрын
thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated! Yeah, it's not the prettiest. At the time of creating there were no videos on this, but hopefully the people who have watched this have been able to do a better job than i did. :) Having said that, it's still going strong. I did actually put hammerite in the screw holes to protect against rust and every now and again i'll spray the hinge with silicon spray to protect it. I've also noticed that you can now get smaller EHUs which are easier to conceal IMO. Thanks again!

@@baddevotions did you just leave the door bit open when you had the hook up connected? I'm prob going to put a small notch in the side of the panel you adjusted, so that the lead can pass out and just drop down infront of the rear door
@baddevotions
@baddevotions 2 жыл бұрын
@@AshtonLiveBand The door doesn't quite close fully, but at a glance it looks closed. I did consider putting a notch in, but didn't end up doing it.

I didn't catch if you said that the rear door keeps it shut? For us with barn doors, I wonder if the left hand side would be easier, as it would save opening both van doors before opening the electric cover? I think I want a hookup, I'm tempted to put an oil heater on a timer so that it doesn't freez. (Or even a bathroom type fan heater so I can see that it's defrosted before leaving the house).
@hoinarilaBEST
@hoinarilaBEST 4 жыл бұрын
Don't think you can hide it in the same place. With barn doors, that's where your lower hinges go. So if there's something there, it will only be exposed with the door open
