Good times. No big deal about head stud. Double nut when reinstalling and use aviation permatex on threads that go into case. Probably reseal each head stud. The minor crack in the head is ok very common. You can still run it

And what about the case nuts coming off? Isn’t that a bad sign?

@@onehappykombi might be bad or they didn’t tighten correctly the first time

Why is the case nuts coming off a bad sign? It just means the bolt is rusted on and therefore pulling the head stud. Just torque it down to the correct spec. Maybe you can add some loctite to keep it from backing out. A loose head stud doesn’t say anything about the condition of the internal components of the engine.

I just think it’s another sign of bad assembly. That on itself is not a reason to tear it apart, but we had too many issues!

@@onehappykombi I don’t know how you all started out but I watched all the episodes and I don’t remember if you all ever went over the history of the motor. Based on that if you didn’t have some sort of knowledge of what condition the motor was in then yes pulling it apart is a great idea because you can always just put it back together and when you do you will know exactly what condition everything is in. I bought my engine off of Craigslist like 14 years and it still runs. I didn’t know anything about these motors back then. I’m still so much all the time and barely fixed some medium size issues I had but it sounds like my engine is done so I might have to replace soon just because I want a different case but it might still be good for a different type of project. Check out @bomberobus he’s got some good explanation videos.

About the mouse nest I was really surprised. You had the engine out and serviced and later in constant use not so long ago! You should also consider adding the factory thermostat and flap system in your neck of the woods. For colder weather it helps with warmup. Also maybe putting back the heater boxes so as to make the heater system functional. You are right; heads are cracked. Better to get new. Re the case you are right in that it might be toast but you’ll know when you measure the endplay and later split the case and look inside. If the case needs a lot of machine work (we already know it needs inserts for the cylinder studs) it might be better to just get a whole new case. Lastly it might make more sense to get a new longblock from Scat already built. Just swap all your accessories and you’re set for a long time.

Yes the mouse nest was definitely a surprise! It must have been recent from sitting around after going to the body shop. It was not there when we pulled the engine for sure!! Thank you for your message!

Lol you don’t need the jackstands under the trans bro it’s supported on the frame horns. The motor can leak from the oil cooler seals, the case half parting line, the rear main seal, the front crank pulley, the oil pump gasket area, fuel pump gasket area, or just a crack in the case. If you don’t see a huge amount of residual oil, then that’s mostly means the rings are bad and you’re burning it.

Are you sure about not needing the jack stands?

My 2 cents, if you go that far, split the cases to at least measure and inspect the crank, cam, and cases. It's scary but for what you are using the van for you need it to be right and reliable.

@@onehappykombi You're doing great! Don't be tempted to rush anything, take your time. It took me a week of soaking and heating a broken exhaust stud :( But that was better than the alternative of drilling and tapping...I did have to oversize one or two that were stripped. Stay cool and looking forward to more videos, especially if you crack the case 👍😎

The title of this video is very misleading, as I do not see anything being unbolted

All same bolts have to be removed regardless of the method , you can find them. This is showing how to get the engine out by yourself. Good luck and thanks for watching!

I was actually looking for a video that would actually show the process in detail. The title of this video indicates that the video showed that. It did not.
