PLEASE FOLLOW THIS GUIDE AT YOUR OWN RISK - THIS IS AN EASY CAR TO CHANGE THE OIL ON RELATIVE TO OTHERS BUT THERE IS STILL SCOPE FOR EXPENSIVE AND DANGEROUS MISTAKES - WE RECOMMEND YOU ORDER YOUR PARTS FROM VW BASED ON CHASSIS NUMBER. WHAT YOU ARE SUPPLIED MAY VARY FROM WHAT WE SHOW IN THIS VIDEO. IF YOU ARE AT ALL UNSURE, LEAVE THIS JOB TO THE PROFESSIONALS. IF YOU AREN'T THEN READ ON!
This video shows you in detail how to perform an oil change on your VW Up! GTI.
I was surprised that it went over 20 minutes but I hate guides that miss out crucial information so I hope you appreciate the fine toothed comb approach.
PLEASE NOTE : If you order a sump plug and washer from VW along with your oil filter we have been advised this may be a different type with a separate washer for some reason. We have had technical advice from a master technician and he says both types will be fine but as ever, check for leaks once the work is completed, whichever type you go for.
I did say we haven't had a torsion beam on a Golf since the Mk4 but that should have been on a Golf GTI - some lower power versions of Mk7 had a torsion beam believe it or not!
The GTI polo shirt I am wearing is a genuine VW part and available from Parts Depot for just £10.49 (RRP is £32) delivered though only in white and Large , XL and XXL are all that's available now (mine's a medium).

ACF50 is great stuff and gets used on my motorcycles. Bilt Hamber do a superb range of products for rust-proofing, and will be my first point of call for my GTI. It takes so little time for rust to engulf the surfaces otherwise. Great to see that the filter is so low down, there's no fun to be had in having to stick your arm deep into a warm and often tight engine bay.

Great video, as usual. I've been doing oil changes on my cars for over 30 years, but still picked up a couple of useful tips. I need to check my manual, though, because on the day of delivery, my dealer told me the GTI is the only Up that can go 30,000km or 2 years between servicing. Thoughts?

Thanks, come back in May 2019 and there will probably be a first service video too performed by VW but IIRC this is just an oil change anyway and unlikely to even see a computer plugged in. Second service is just oil filter, I think 40k miles or 4 years will be the big one so see you in 2022!

Andrew good stuff, Mine is now on 7000 miles, cracking on in my great fun car. My oil pretty clean on the stick, hardly a drop used in that mileage. Did you have too reset computer service warning light , for next service interval - does it have one indeed or is it really old school like me. Did you check the filter for metal fragment / mag plug and actual state of the old oil?
@volkswizard
@volkswizard 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Keith. I didn't reset the reminder because I want it to still be due in a year or 10k miles, whichever comes soonest. The filter is metal so would need cutting open which will create metal particles! I can tell you have a Porsche as this is normal with their paper filters, do it all the time. The plug isn't magnetic. The oil was good but then it would be at 1800 miles and nigh on impossible to see the swarf if there is some as it shoots out of the sump. I'm not too worried about specifically seeing swarf, the point of the change is to get rid of that first oil because if there is swarf it will be in there for 10k miles, for what it costs (£30-£35?) not worth thinking too hard about :)

always put some new oil into the filter so the filter element is already oilsoaked after first startup and doesnt have to fight trough a dry filterelement, so the oil gets quickly to the journalbearings, just a protip

Like the silver GTI in the back to! Got the same one in silver only with a slightly bigger engine. :) Nice vid., one question tho why use LL oil??, i think you keep up the shorter interval of oil change!?
@volkswizard
@volkswizard 6 жыл бұрын
Hi GT20VT. Would love a 1.8T Lupo if it can brake OK and in a straight line :) I used LL oil because it costs only a bit more than the 5w/40 stuff and I know it's definitely approved for the car. I don't know what oil it comes with from the factory so I don't know if I've gone up or down. Can't see a point in using cheaper oil even if it's going to get changed in 8200 miles, I'd be wanting to change it again after 5000 miles, while now I don't think LL oil will degrade much so it can stay in until the next oil change at 10k :)
@gti20vtMarcel
@gti20vtMarcel 6 жыл бұрын
Indeed the price difference is not the issue, LL oil is ok aslong the people don't think it can stay in for 30K but over 6 years or so! :) Black sludge destroyed many engine's, 1.8T for example was sensitive about that. But i know that won't happen to you!
@volkswizard
@volkswizard 6 жыл бұрын
The amount of filthy oil filler areas I used to see on 1.8T and even 2.7 V6 on RS4 all from absolutely trashed oil. When you see a new engine you realise how clean it is under the cap. I've done 1800 miles and it's still mint. It can only be oil degradation that causes this. Best check of an engine, look under the cap :)

No mention of running an oil flush through before draining the old oil. Is it overkill or not necessary on new cars?
@volkswizard
@volkswizard 6 жыл бұрын
Definitely not necessary at this mileage. A lot of people say don't use it on older cars either because it can dislodge gunk that blocks the strainer. Best thing to do is just change the oil regularly. This is a running in oil change so is a bit different, 1800 miles oil changes aren't necessary after this one! After that I'd say 5k in the ideal world or 10k absolute max if you are running long life oil. If you track your car then halve that.

70 mpg????? I know you are running those imperial gallons there, but I'm only getting 56 mpg(imperial). 46.5 mpg to the U.S. gallon. We've had our "High Up" for 4 years now and its been a champ. I'm doing the oil change myself this time. I've been doing them on my cars for as long as I've been driving. Good advice on the early oil change for a new car. We've got 41K miles on ours. Great video mate, enjoyed watching that. Thanks for the link to ACF-50 on Amazon. I bought some for my motorbike, but I changed the sort order from recommended to low-high & found it cheaper! (every penny counts) A seller local to me here in Cornwall, Opie Oils had it listed at £15.49 inc delivery, but cos they are local I popped down & got a can for £13.99 - bargain! FYI they have a good article about ACF-50, which some of your other viewers may find useful. The link is: blog.opieoils.co.uk/all-posts/acf-50-motorcycle/ Cheers and look forward to the next video!

Would it not be cheaper to buy a box of sump plug washers instead of plug and washer?
@volkswizard
@volkswizard 4 жыл бұрын
Washer has to be cut off if you want to change it, it doesn’t just come off. Then getting the right type of washer to prevent sump thread from stripping or oil and leaking is not easy. Most garages just reuse the bolt and washer but a lot of garages also strip the thread in sump. Do it right, do it once.

Why not just change the washer. Seems daft to do the plug every time. Just a thought.
@volkswizard
@volkswizard 5 жыл бұрын
When a car is under warranty it's best not to mess as VW will find any excuse to bounce a claim these days. If you ask VW for a washer they don't list one for this car so it has to be a plug and washer. Divert from "servicing to manufacturers' specification' at your own risk! TBH even on cars that are out of warranty I replace the plug as I know 100% it's going to seal perfectly each time.

Acf50 is rubbish ! Used it for years and found it didn’t protect anything on my car. I’ve just bought some bilt hamber atom Mac for regular anti corrosion protection . As this is from bilt hamber it will do what it say on the tin unlike acf50 . Not used it yet as I’m saving it for my Up gti when it arrives. 👍
@volkswizard
@volkswizard 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Sean. You don't say why you have such a negative experience of ACF-50 but a lot of people me included swear by it. I don't have any experience of Atom Mac but it looks like a completely different product to ACF-50. For a start people are spraying it on brake discs. The oily nature of ACF-50 means you'd want it nowhere near brake discs. ACF-50 is used in aeronautical applications and you don't have many products approved for this type of use that are 'rubbish' because of the nature of the materials they are protecting.
@Puddingtops
@Puddingtops 6 жыл бұрын
volkswizard Hi Volkswizard! I found it didn’t offer the corrosion resistance all the hype promised. Did a non scientific test with a brake disc I changed on my car with one side coated with acf50 and the other side with 3 in 1 spay oil . Left disc hang on a tree branch and a few weeks both sides showed almost identical amounts of rust so acf50 did no better than 3 in 1 oil and didn’t stop rust. This backs up what I found on the car and around the garden ( gates, locks , hinges and garden tool ect. Maybe I didn’t apply it correctly or it was a duff batch but it didn’t work for me. I’ll happily send you what I have left completely free for you to test if you want? I’ll be trying the atom mac out as this also has great reviews is easy to apply with a garden spray bottle and it will migrate into every crevice but will need regular but dead easy applications. It’s also Uk made and bilt hamber don’t make anything that’s not top quality.
@tomstacey4242
@tomstacey4242 6 жыл бұрын
I must admin I didn't like ACF50 too much - it's greasy so when spraying onto suspension components, it attracts particles which I'm sure will accelerate wear. On flat clean surfaces, it ends up making them super dirty. Atom Mac (which is made locally to me) seems to have had excellent reviews and it water based so not so sticky. I suggest a try Andrew?
@Puddingtops
@Puddingtops 6 жыл бұрын
tomstacey Totally agree. I bought ACF 50 ( spray can ) based on great reviews and it didn’t work for me so bought the 1 litre pump spray bottle ( as all the hype still had me sucked in ) and that didn’t work. Messy , attracts dirt and didn’t protect from corrosion any better than a basic oil like 3 in one and over priced. I’m always amused at people that say it protected my bike over winter while off the road and in the garage as I never had any of my bikes rust while in winter hibernation and they had nothing more than a wipe over with some gt85. I even had a Aprillia Falco that was stored outside under a bike cover and that didn’t have a speck of rust on it with a wipe over with the nothing special gt85. Ive yet to use the Atom Mac on my UP gti as I’m still waiting for it lol ! But I’ll report back in 2020 . What looks good is the piss easy application with garden sprayer and the way it migrates to all parts and when used on brake discs after washing stops flash corrosion .

Thanks for commenting Danny. Would you like me to show you receipts for sump plugs if you send me your email address. I buy them in bulk every so often from Febi Bilstein so they are OE quality but a lot cheaper than from VW. I replace them every time regardless of whose car or the mileage as I do the job properly which I accept is unusual. What's the mileage got to do with it anyway? Once they are tightened the crush washer has done it's job and may never reseal again so best practice is that it should be replaced. My view is that while leaks are rare I can buy lots of sump plugs for the cost of replacing an engine for the one time when it does leak.
@volkswizard
