VW Up! GTI - REVIEW/TEST

The smallest VW of all time! Here in Monte Carlo I will check if I can pick "up" girls with the Up and even do the in depth review. It´s somehow the new VW Lupo GTI. Great review, much fun - loved the 'getting a date' scene, too! I like the up! GTI. I loved the Lupo GTI. I loved the Lupo 3L. I love the Mk1 Golf GTI - I bought one new in 1983, and still have it. Keep up the good work.

I really wonder how it behaves on long trips. Since this one has 6 gear manual... Although I'm curious about how loud it gets inside when driving with highway speed (130/140kph) and how comfortable are the seats as well as how good the fuel comsumption is. It seems to be a pretty good car for 1 or 2 people to the city, but what if they travel sometimes with a little luggage? let's say a distance of 600kms... How this little car behaves on highways and if it's possible to not die because of loudness and lack of comfort inside.

Im ordering an up GTI next month and would like to know if you're sure that it has an oil temperature display. The UP TSI doenst have it (maybe depends on location? at least here in germany its nowhere to be found) and i think its a nice feature for being able to tell if your engine is warm enough for some more revs. ;)

I’m 6 foot 3 and wondered how you found the driving position given the lack of reach adjustment on the steering wheel? Did you find the seat low enough? Thanks!

M M Hmmmm... well ahm no.. the driving position is truly a bit high if you're taller. You may have seen the scene where I passed by the camera with the car before a left curve came and there you can see that I look like a giant sitting in the car :-) but I got used to it quite quickly

Truthful honest review..i owned a lupo gti and i remember 3 years ago we are all crazy waiting for this screamer . and eventually now we are all dissapointed ..lupo gti is way better than this.

Thank you very much for bringing up the point of those horrible Halogen lights. I honestly have no clue what VW did on those meetings when they decided to put those candlelights in the front. Exactly my point!!! Worst choice ever!

You can put your silly big phone in either the door pocket or glove locker. iPhone 6/7 etc fits perfectly on shelf in centre console above gear stick - or in that MMI bracket. Google maps is perfect from there.. Door size and length, plus rear access - the 5 door shell woks so much better from my experience. Otherwise good review. Remember not every Up! driver is 6ft 2

Thanks for your comment. Well - it´s not a silly big phone tho... I have sat in many cars where this isn´t a problem. The Up has a really lush interior and that´s nice. But storage space isn´t really given. I don´t pu my phone in the door pocket because I hate nothing more than things doing sounds while I´m driving as it´s flying around in the door pocket. And I even dont want a scratched telefone. To me it belongs in front of the gear shifter. And there it doesn´t fit. As the telephones are getting bigger so should the manufacturers adapt the interior. And I know that the Up drivers aren´t 6.2 - anyway I was surprised how well I fit behind my self!

Thank you a lot! Well - in the city the Up has more charme - it´s more special because you don´t expect it to be a GTI. And it has no competitor in agility!! My date? I just say: That body.... :-)

Tolles Review, Kompliment auch für die sehr guten französisch Kentnisse. Das Auto mit den riesen Türen, ohne festen Navi und ohne LED oder Xenon ist VW nicht so gut gelungen. Zu viele, zu wichtige Abstriche. Lupo war definitiv von der Optik besser und sportlicher. Auch der Fiat 500 sieht besser aus.

Somuchen na das freut mich doch! Ich war schon ein bisschen besorgt ob es zu kritisch klingt. Dabei finde ich den Wagen echt super, richtig kultig eigentlich. Das einzige ist halt dass ich wirklich so ein wahnsinniger LED Freak bin und wenn ein Auto sowas nicht hat nehme ich das halt als Kritikpunkt. Aber ansonsten hat der Wagen wirklich Spaß gemacht und fühlt sich auch vom Fahren her wie der Golf 1 GTI damals an, der mein erstes Auto war. Freue mich sehr dass Dir meine reviews gefallen es wird auf jeden Fall mehr folgen

Hab mir jetzt a ältere Videos auf deutsch angeschaut und ich finde du hälst dem pro und contra immer sehr gut die Waage! Mach einfach weiter so wie bisher und dann wirst sicher durch die Decke gehen :) P.S.: LED is mir zum Beispiel gar nicht wichtig. Früher bzw heute gings a ohne und ich hatte nie das Gefühl was zu verpassen :P Der UP GTI ist definitv super, nur schade dass er hinten Trommelbremsen hat, ich meine wtf... Ich würde es noch interessant finden wie laut der Innenraum auf der Autobahn ist (130+). Wie auch immer Daumen hoch! :)

Mike Hammer yes right. Saw that afterwards. BUT it's also not practical that you can activate the simulation mode that easy while tiping something on that small screen because a phones screen is small in a car while driving.. and even in the normal - not simulation mode it tried to lead me places that didn't exist..

This car has too little power and acceleration. 115 BHP and 0-62mph or 0-100kmh in 9.6 seconds is not good enough. Ideally this car should have 130bhp and 0-62mph or 0-100kmh in 7 seconds or so.

vhira it weights more than 1000 kg, so 130 hp would make it do the 0 - 100 km/h in about 8.5 seconds. This would be good enough for a TSI model, for a GTI, not quite

mikecustoms actually I think I might have underestimated this car. This car weighs about 997kg, and if you compare it to a 2010 Renault Sport Twingo which has 133 bhp, the Twingo weighs just slightly over then a ton. Also the Up GTI’s 0-62mph or 0-100kmh is 0.3 seconds slower than the Twingo Sports 0-62mph or 0-100kmh time of 8.5 seconds which isn’t that far off, plus the Up GTI has more torque than the Twingo Sport because the Twingo Sport has 118lbs ft of torque, and the Up GTI has 147lbs ft. So that shows that the Up GTI’s performance is quite promising. My only criticisms of this car is that the chassis needs to be a lot more stiffer, to reduce the roles into the corners, fit integrated mmi systems rather then using your phone and also to use LED lights rather then the old fashioned Halogen lights.
