VW Yellow Oil Light Won’t Reset | VW Bonnet Latch Problems

Problems resetting the yellow oil light? Might be the bonnet switch. Let me show you how to check the switch and change the latch out. This same latch is used in loads of VWs including the Polo, Golf, A6 and probably more. I’m showing you on a Polo.

Thanks for explaining why oil light stays lit if the latch microswitch is broken. Other than that, I would just disconnect the wire to the switch because if that switch fails to "bonnet is open" position, the wiper and windwasher will stop working. Not very nice if you're running in rain during the night!

@@CycloneCyd Yeah, I didn't know that either until the wipers stopped working and all the fuses were okay. Luckily found out the cause with lots of googling instead of replacing any wrong parts. If the dashboard MFD display had said "Wipers disabled because hood open" it would have been easy but *nothing* happened when I tried to use wipers.

@@MikkoRantalainen TB H I'm gobsmacked. As a Pro Auto Engineer myself, I'd say that is diabolical functionality tying the wipers in to the bonnet switch. Extremely dangerous IMO.

interesting video my VW Caravelle 2001 has a similar issue .. I replaced the oil level sensor in the sump. which moved the continuous oil level warning to an occasional oil level warning . I am servicing the cam belts , water pump etc and have replaced both the bonnet switch and yet another oil level sensor in the sump. fingers crossed , my 2001 vw Caravelle will be good for another few years .nice video .

As a short term fix, would shorting the pins on the loom side socket simulate a functioning micro switch?

The answer is yes. Shorted the pins on the loom side and light cancelled. No need to replace the catch.

Does this apply to a 2002 vw new beetle ? I have a yellow flashing oil light with three ignition in the on position (not running ) that goes out after 3 flashes . Oil level is perfect on it and I've scratched my head on this one .

Not sure, but it sounds like the bulb check function. You'd have to check the owners manual to be sure.

Hi buddy can you tell me if one of the two wires going to the switch are meant to be positive because im not getting a reading off my mulimeter im thinking there is wire issue as i changed the level sensor under the sump did an oil and filter change and still cant turn off the orange oil light any help would be appreciated

No, it's not a 'simple' 12V signal. The switch is conected from an ECU. You'll have to trace the wiring from switch to ECU and test continuity.

Correct. if the switch is faulty you can't reset the light.

Is it possible to simulate open/close by just shorting the connector's contacts on car side with piece of wire? Will the car then think bonet is closed?

Yes, I would think so, it's a simple microswitch.

Can't you bridge the wires of the sensor and plug? So it just shows closed and the lights goes off.

No, that won't work. the ECU needs to 'see' the bonnet opened. You could fit an alternative switch, like that fitted to the Saab.

I'm having this problem now and the biggest issue is that that the wire has been ripped off and all I have is two stumps coming out of the harness, don't really know what to do.. Wouldn't removing the battery for some time erase this?

@@Slisktord the ECU needs to see the change of state of the switch. Twice. Maybe take the bulb out? But check oil level often

Had the same problem garage replaced bonnet latch but it was the fuse to the heated seats and outside temperature which they hadn't picked up on .

Hi Mark, thanks for your input. That's properly poor service from your garage. Something I call "parts darts" or "diagnosis by guesswork", something garages LOVE because they get it wrong at the customers expense - so where is the incentive for them to get it right?? I ask!! They'd soon do a proper job if they weren't gonna get paid for a poor job. Perfect example is my video about Polo ABS - just look through the comments and see how many people are being quoted big££s for the sake of a fuse!!! If you want a job doing properly - do it yourself. If you don't know how - LEARN!!!

Hi Cuba, I'm sure it would. I can't imagine US vehs would be different. For that to happen VW would have to develop unique software solutions in the ECU - and that runs into big money in development (believe me, I know). Which viewer enquiry are you refering to?
