My guess regarding that name: "rock pigeon" might be a direct translation of the Chinese 原鸽 (Simplified Chinese in China, as opposed to Traditional Chinese used elsewhere), which is a homophone of 原歌 "original song", in the sense of "this turntable sounds as good as listening to a live original". But at this price, can you really expect better? And any form of QC? When you're looking at the AT-LP60X and above, then yes, QC is expected, and mostly does it's job - some dodgy ones do get through, but at least AT are more particular about their products, and have a reputation to maintain, but who are "One-By One" and their "Rock Pigeon"?

Essentially, by offloading the QC work onto the customer, and with how you may need to do a few returns to get one you can tolerate, they brought some of the purchase price down by increasing the opportunity cost. @johncoops68972 жыл бұрын
No, a linear volume control causes all of the "action" to occur at the minimum settings. A log pot is used to even it out so 50% loudness occurs at midpoint, rather than at 10% rotation. This probably uses a linear pot to send a voltage signal to an electronic volume control IC, since that is the way most modern circuits are configured. The reason is that it allows the cheapest single gang linear pot to be used on a stereo system, or even 2.1 channel or even surround sound as well.

I was listening on my phone, so I didn't really notice the reverse channels issue till I put on headphones, but even on my phone I could tell that Marianne was a touch fast. I'm going to have to get a copy of that album, because I just keep humming that song day in and day out. It has itself a permanent spot in my KZbin music likes

The problem with volume is the exact opposite of it being linear. Volume potentiometers are supposed to be logarithmic, because that's how our ears and our brains process volume, but this one is linear and that's why it's weird.

@eDoc20203 жыл бұрын
A linear potentiometer would result in the volume changes being more substantial at the low end. My guess here is that instead of attenuating the signal directly the knob only sends a control voltage to the amplifier chip. If the amplifier is designed to take a linear control signal instead of a 'corrected' one then a double 'correction' like we hear here could result.
@johncoops68972 жыл бұрын
@@eDoc2020 - yes, correct. It probably uses a single gang linear pot and a digital volume control chip.

Take a look at the back of the cartridge to see if the connectors are on correctly. That may be a point where they are reversed. As usual another great video... 👍👍

I wondered if the RCA jacks on the back are reversed, which could be easily remedied by reversing the cables for the one set of jack inputs.

"Pigeon" in french means someone who get pissed off... for the reversed channel, you have 4 wires to side reverse at the AT3600 pickup head. For the Counterweight, add 4/5 layers of paper.

About 4 years ago I bought a Pioneer M6500 music center. It worked pretty well as it actually has separate electronics for each of it's functions and using the turntable sounded fantastic through some pretty big Pioneer speakers that I got specially for it. The only downsides where that the control knobs on the front had been slightly bent out of shape (and were loose) and the front plate appeared to be covered in blood ! Well I've got to say that if I was forced to only have one 'system' then this would be it, despite the lack of cd player (it sounds that good !) And the price I paid ? £11.50, an absolute bargain !

You must admit though, "Rock Pigeon" has a certain ring to it, although you can't quite tell whether rock is supposed to be a music genre or an aggregate of minerals, the latter is certainly fitting, like a pigeon that flies like a rock. I'd love to see future, potentially less terribly botched products from this brand!

I remember I bought acouple no name stereo's with a record player and built-in 8-track player in 1976. Until I was introduced to real stereo equipment then I got a technics turntable a kenwood receiver and kenwood speakers. Still have those kenwood speakers 777D's. Hopefully people who buy these kind of units move up as they gain more experience like I did. Luckily for me I was in the air force and was exposed to quality stereo equipment!!

Dude! I have been listening with a defective audio cable to my PC speakers for like a year now and didn't know it until watching this video. My cable's channels seem to be reversed too, so I heard your turntable reproducing them correctly! I then checked a few other sources and yep, all reversed. I just reversed the cable so it's red to white and white to red and now all the stereo tests I've tried are as they should be. If nothing else, thanks for that! I may have to leave my own bad Amazon review for this cable... But anyway, I enjoyed this video otherwise too.

That "It's time to go" track is such a banger. And it's a... promotional track commisioned by an automobile company?? For a moment I thought some obscure synthpop outfit just picked such a name for themselves. Actually, this turntable could be a pretty cool cheap introductory hardware for someone who just wants to play similar bargain bin discs, if not for the risk of receiving it busted in postage and with misaligned parts.

I call that really synthesized, heavy-reverb music the "Two-Handed Swords" sound, like the song Push It To The Limit from Scarface. It reminds me of excessive times, like the 1980s or carrying a two-handed sword and using a trebuchet and living in a castle with a pet mini-dragon.

For that price i think is top of a class and is a lot better than the ordinary turntables people used to have all the previous years for home music listening.Nowadays is impossible to find turntables of the known hi-fi brands and the other solution is to buy a hi-end class equipment which turns to be impossible also.

The channel reversal is easily fixed (22:45) Swap the RCA plugs around - job done! And because this device runs on 9 volts DC, there should be no difference 50 Hz vs. 60 Hz. Indeed the AC line frequency difference should be irrelevant for a DC-powered device such as this.

Sadly, in 2023 it doesn’t look like this is available anymore. But for 90 bucks, you can get a 4.4 star Popsky with Bluetooth and even headphone jack. I’m glad to see there are reasonably priced entries for the hobby. My record store sells vintage clearance LPs for 50 cents each if you buy 10. Have fun, and don’t bankrupt yourself.
