Probably someone didn't notice this, but if you take a closer look at the display on 20:44, you can see the signs for an AM/FM radio, SD/MMC/MemoryStick/SmartMedia/CompactFlash cards and USB, that means they used the screen from a more enhanced model that had an AM/FM tuner, USB input and a card reader, or the one from the mini HiFi system with a built-in turntable 🤣

6:22 That's weird, since the button on the turntable is a microswitch, the input should be interpreted electronically, so it should be doable (just intead of the microswitch the electronic input would be an IR receiver). Because the whole unit appears to be just multiple off the shelf parts in one case, I think whoever made the assembled unit didn't want to do more wiring than what was neccessary to make the three inputs work together.

@@AndrewHeller-jn7dx In a nutshell they advertised a high quality digital conversion service for your old media, but they used the most lazy, and sloppy methods, thus resulting in piss poor garbage quality like taking stereo audio, and capturing it as super compressed mono, while way overcharging for the service There is an older video on the channel about it where he sent off some media to the company to convert, gets it back, then he analyzes it for how piss poor of a job they did!! So the service did nothing but pray on people who don't know any better about technology, and you can do a better job than they did with a basic USB capture card, and learning the basics of video editing software that's free like KdenLive which can run on most Linux distros, Windows, or Intel Macs.

@@qwertykeyboard5901 The oldest magnetic media, assuming it doesn't physically degrade is still fine. There is a youtube video of an Andrews sisters song being played from paper tape reel-reel. It sounds excellent. The paper tape was a reel to reel English format in 1947 (IIRC) before the Mylar backing was standardized. This tape is the same as any other tape other than being on paper and not mylar. The real problem with magnetic media and especially reel to reel is so much of it has physically degraded. Speaking of bright smeary LCDs, i have a VERY cheap stereo that is so cheap, it doesn't even have a brand name, and it had an obnoxiously blue LCD screen for the "fake digital" radio tuner, which is just a (really good) analog tuner with a digital readout. The LCD is also on when the CD is playing. I grabbed my soldering iron and I replaced the blue LED in it with a white one. It's a bit dimmer than the original LED, but most importantly, the screen is actually more readable, and its black segments on white background.

I even bought a unit from them with the "Encore Technology" brand name on it. I also would like to point out that this same catalog sold this very same unit, but only with the "Encore Technology" brand name on it, with the only difference being that it had two mini-speakers with it. They simply continued selling these things by rebranding them "Anders Nicholson" and passing them off as new, but were simply the same things with a different brand name on them. Not only that, I checked them out on the BBB website and although they have a 4.21/5 rating based on customer reviews, they also have had some customer complaints, with eighty-six in the last three years and twenty-four in the last 12 months. It seems remarkably well-engineered for what it is and when it came out, and I bet at some point the design might've even called for some kind of isolation or dampening between the components, but someone may've pinched some pennies and it went away. They should've thrown away the separate auto-return motor, but they probably saw the value-add of that to be better for sales than actual quality. You don't know it's going to be junk until you get it, and returning to a mail order catalogue is going to be a nightmare, especially if you don't have the mobility to get it all back together and get it to a post office.

That restriction was imposed by the record industry, because the "audio" CD-Rs are more expensive due to them getting a cut of the price. Then of course CD burner drives for computers came around, and they could record audio (including audio files obtained from ...unofficial sources) on the cheaper "non-audio" CDs. In my country they have a similar tax, but it is for any blank CDs/DVDs (and other media, such as hard drives and the internal storage of new computers/phones/etc)

@@vwestlife Oh sweet thanks for that. My mum bought one of those terrible USB tape players that look like a cheap walkman, and it only supported mono 16k... cursed catalogs that convince the elderly with those "your media is degrading" nonsense, and then offer a way to make it worse when trying to archive it

0:30 - 🤦♂ Oh, no... Not the knockoff "Early 1980s FF-only" car stereo mech... That's a non-starter for me. I have mid-1980s Blaupunkt mechs (thank you, ACDelco/GM factory radios) that would be better. 🤪 0:56 - Aha! That explains EVERYTHING. 10:21 - If you turn your head, stick your tongue out at JUST the right angle, and apply the perfect level of pressure on the lever, I bet you could make that mech play in Fast-Forward. 11:17 - 100% correct about these mechs being noisy. I've never seen one that wasn't. Horrible hiss, sometimes even picking up a buzz from the motor if it's a dirt-cheap motor. These mechs were cheap in the early-80s, nearly everyone ended up getting Auto Reverse decks with some sort of Music Search feature before the 90s, and these mechs were, for the most part, deprecated. Until the lovely folks at Crossley started slapping them in kitschy faux-antique radios, I had pretty much forgotten they existed. 13:57 - "Aaaand they're off!" Well, it's not GREAT, but it's not BAD either. The turntable is surprisingly-good, I expected it to be merely a cosmetic variant of the generic cheapo plastic turntable, and I fully expected the counterweight to be fixed but appearing to be adjustable.

This is wicked I need a new turntable especially with a cd player and cassette player but unfortunately I don't think it's available in the UK 😢jx

Considering that it’s a newer system, it could be worse. Some parts are pretty nice, but some could definitely be better, but again for a 3 in 1 HiFi component, it isn’t too bad!

I hope that maybe Crosley and Victrola would like to see a similar version of this and in addition to these, it will have the USB plug to play MP3’s with the stick, and a SD/MMC slot to play MP3’s using an SDXC card or SD card for maximum capability, or maybe a Bluetooth option to stream music via iPhone or iPad.

I discovered it in Dan O'Connor's videos. He often uses it as a demo tape.

Heartland America has a unit in their most recent catalog that adds full function Cassette, bt in and out, usb, and SD card. Looks like the turntable is not as nice. It would be cool to get a review of this one. 👍

Record-ology did a review of the Crosley Eclipse, which is the same thing as that except with external speakers. It's not very impressive.

So this collection of different plastics has a separate motor for the return mechanism. My €1000 Technics player doesn't have that. I'm jealous now. 😢😉

This looks like a surprisingly decent unit for what it is. It does what it's supposed to do well enough, which is nice. I love that you use these reviews as a way to show off your eclectic choice of music. That blue Slugbug EP sure got my attention! Where did you get that Cicada Killer cassette from? It sounded nice - was that a new tape from a new band?

As always a great video. Better than the Amstrad “hifi” I had back in the 1980’s but only just😉🏴

if you use the track increment button, does it result in a cd that will play without a pause between tracks in a real player? ("without gaps")

The auto-return of that turntable works fine on conventional records like the 12" 33⅓ RPM and 7" 45 RPM. The problem is that when you play unconventional records with speeds like 12" 45 RPM, the auto-return won't kick in even when the stylus reaches the end groove because it expects a 7" record with a smaller record label. The opposite is when playing a 7" 33⅓ RPM, and the auto-return kicks in before the song is finished because it's expecting a 12" record with a larger record label.

@VWestlife Hi! 👋 Could you review the Crosley Mercury (CR6255A-FG) turntable sporting a Crosley magnetic cartridge with a Crosley NP-15 diamond needle? According to a YT channel called _Record-ology,_ Crosley's new magnetic cartridge + NP-15 diamond needle is actually quite good ^^

It records audio on a standard (data) CD-R/RW? That's pretty cool. Most CD recorders for audio can only record on the more expensive CD-R Audio discs. I wonder if the MPAA knows that hehe. The CD audio recording firmware is impressive, and so is the turntable mechanism (though it sounds to me like there's a lot of variation in the turntable speed, at least before you put the drop of oil in?). You could easily add some potmeters and a stroboscope, I reckon. And it can probably be modified to be a little less prone to mechanical noise by modifying the CD drive. Oh and of course it needs a DCC cassette mechanism so you can play the Jeremy Heiden album it its best format 😀

That drop of oil just may do the trick to help reduce or eliminate the vibrations.
