The Valais Wallis Time Machine (VWTM) Associationorganized an interdisciplinary hackathon from November 18th to 19th at the Espace Saint-Marc (Le Châble) on the theme: Landscapes of the Val de Bagnes: the village of Champsec before and after the Giétroz disaster.
Goal: recreate the landscape of the village before and after the disaster.
In 1818, the valley was hit by one of the most significant disasters of the 19th century: the Giétroz flood. On June 16th, the overflowing Drance de Bagnes, laden with ice, mud, rocks, and wood, ravaged the Val de Bagnes all the way to Martigny, causing dozens of deaths and considerable damage.
Historians have gathered data on the inventory of goods lost in the village due to the disaster. Plans, maps, engravings, and period texts are available. This data can be combined with Swisstopo's terrain model to revive this lost landscape. This data will be provided to participants before the hackathon.
