There are times when I stop to consider how different our lives, our cultural heritage, would be if Mozart had not been born. We'd have an enormous void in our aesthetic awareness and yet we'd also not know what was missing. Circumstances came together to bring Mozart to his remarkable destiny. We should be grateful.

So pleasant, so natural, so witty and fresh. Sounds effortless, almost as if it wrote itself (It didn't). Mozart never gets old. He has been by constant companion for over 50 years now. Life would be so much poorer without him. Hadn't heard this serenade in decades.

J Carter Joseph Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is the creation of God almighty. He is Most innocent & pure of all the creatures, surprisingly in the animal kingdom he is to be known as the 🦩. Until I’ve got the sign in a dream who he truly is inside, which i hadn’t known before, it relates to that animal in nature. As an experiment, watch a video of a flourishing flamingo while listening to Mozart’s beauty. So then See for yourself how you can match the resemblance of such a miracle that of which Mozart’s own personality sparkles within the music of true beauty...

This work is a shining example of Mozart’s early style... simple, yet interesting and comfortable. This is probably the best example of the _traditional_ Salzburg Finalmusik written for the graduating university students. The musicians would arrive to the outdoor garden venue, all while playing a designated march, for this one it is K. 237 (The bass and violone players would have the instrument strapped to their torsos). Great structural ingenuity with the recurrence of that simple downward I-V bass line heard in the opening. It is again heard verbatim in 30:47.

Colloredo was the Bisshop of Salzburg, living in the giant castle over the town. He didn't have any patience with composers delivering music 'too late'. They were imprisoned in his castle. Once Coloredo forced protestants to leave Salzburg in the middle of the winter. Eventually those protestants could find a new home in the Netherlands after a voyage along the river Rhine (in the middle of the Winter).

The rest of the story is worth knowing. (...) The summers of the past seem to be filled with sunshine and music in the open. The continuous rain that usually torments visitors to Salzburg these days must be a modern innovation, one thinks. At all events, Mozart in his teens, among many other composers, wrote at least one Serenade every summer, to celebrate the wedding of a prominent citizen, the Archbishop's name-day or the end of the University year. The music was probably completed on the night before and rehearsed with the incredible speed, or optimisim, that prevailed in the good old days. The band would play the music in two or more parts of the town on the same evening, proceeding to their new location with a March specially composed to go with the Serenade. The autograph of K.203 (K.189b) bears the words 'Serenata del Sgr. Wolfgango Amadeo Mozart, nel mese d'agosto 1774'. The date is firmly crossed out but seems a probable one, (Mozart was then eighteen). The suggestion by Mozart's first biographer Niemetschek that it was written for the name-day of the Archbishop Hieronymus Colloredo, has given this work the title of 'Colloredo Serenade'. As that name-day falls on the 30th September, the connection is dubious. This Serenade combines the formal grandeur of the opening and D major Minuets with the breathless exhilaration of the first and last movements on the one hand, and the tenderness of the Andantes on the other - the first a deeply felt operatic Aria (the long held note that introduces the solo was a common feature of slow espressivo Arias in Italian opera), the other a piece of sustained night-music with a murmuring accompaniment. (Decca STS 15077-ES)

Good post! So the "Colloredo" title came from Niemetschek? I might have known. But "Hieronymus" is 15 June, no? Either way it doesn't fit. This one is so long that I don't think it was a finalmusik - more likely something like a wedding party.

The Köchel catalogue was created by Ludwig von Köchel in order to organize Mozart's works in chronological order. The first number is the one that Köchel himself gave it, and the second number was given later; it is more precise in showing that this serenade was composed in 1774.
